Chiptuner team elix make the Super Nintendo do things I never thought it could

There's nothing that quite replicates the gritty '90s synth of the Super Nintendo's Sony SPC700 sound chip. Electronic dance music team elix, consisting of cTrix and ferris, have developed a music track creator, so that chip...

This Kaizo Mario World speedrun stresses me out

"This is what happens when a very sadistic person gets ahold of a level editor." Some of us get a huge kick out of watching strangers overcome the odds in near-impossible games, and as far as those go, Kaizo Mario World (or ...

Earthworm Jim 2 scares me to this day photo
Earthworm Jim 2 scares me to this day
by Jordan Devore

Leading up to Halloween, I've been wanting to write about horror games because that's what you do in October, right? I still might; I'm playing the oft-recommended Fatal Frame II for the first time now and am planning to revisit Condemned. But before I get to those, I have been thinking about games that aren't traditionally deemed scary that managed to get to me anyway.

My mind jumps back to Shiny Entertainment's classic action-platformer Earthworm Jim 2. What a surreal game. It went places you wouldn't expect even if you had played its predecessor or were otherwise familiar with characters like Professor Monkey-for-a-Head and Queen Slug-for-a-Butt.

This was a game willing to dress you up like a blind cave salamander and force you to flap around villi-filled intestines to the tune of "Moonlight Sonata" for a single level. And god forbid you bounce off one of those mischievous pinball bumpers (whose intestines are these?) -- the ensuing scream was horrific. But The Villi People isn't the level that prompted this article.

That distinction belongs to Puppy Love, a stage whose title alone strikes fear into my heart.

Fangamer is going all out for this EarthBound project

Fangamer has come a long way from its beginnings at Starmen.net. What started as a Mother/EarthBound-focused fandom now sells all sorts of videogame-related merchandise. With this current project, titled You Are Now EarthBou...

Missing EarthBound is my biggest gaming regret photo
Missing EarthBound is my biggest gaming regret
by Jordan Devore

Every so often on Destructoid, we publish a post celebrating EarthBound and, right on cue, I come away impressed. Whether it's Chad recounting an emotional, fourth-wall-breaking moment, Jonathan explaining the game's greatness, or Darren sharing a heartfelt animation, I'm left in awe at the raw passion, talent, and near decades-long commitment of its fans.

I also leave those posts feeling a hint of sadness. For as much as I know about EarthBound, I don't *know* EarthBound. Not personally. I would say I've never experienced it before but that's untrue. I have tried and failed to play it a couple of times now, as recently as a few years back. That last attempt wasn't painful so much as it was a little depressing.

"Why can't I get into this?" I remember asking myself. "I'm sure I'd adore it if only I could!"

Demon's Crest, one of the most rare SNES games to date, is coming to the Virtual Console

One of my biggest regrets is not buying Demon's Crest as a kid. I rented it at least twice and beat it multiple times -- as soon as I was done with one playthrough, I started the next one. It's easily one of the best pla...

I'm so glad I never sold my copy of Mario Paint

I may not replay videogames very often, but when I do get the urge, it feels impossible to ignore. If it's an Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, or Wii game I feel compelled to revisit, that's no big deal at all -- there's still enough...

Get your nostalgia flowing with this cartoon retelling of EarthBound photo
Get your nostalgia flowing with this cartoon retelling of EarthBound
by Darren Nakamura

Fans of EarthBound celebrated the 20th anniversary of its Japanese release a little over a month ago on August 27. Followers of the series are known for going above and beyond in celebrating it, so of course one would spend four years making this lovely, charming tribute.

The five-minute animation retells the story of Ness and his friends on their journey to save Eagleland from Giygas. So many little touches are in there that will bring a smile to EarthBound fans' faces. There is a Spiteful Crow carrying a cookie, Paula's teddy bear, a New Age Retro Hippie, the Runaway Five, Overcoming Shyness, homesickness, and more. The iconic scene of Paula praying during the final battle made me a little misty-eyed.

More information about the video and its creation can be found at Project PK Flash.

Is anyone else not playing Destiny right now?

Super Famicom box art book project is on Kickstarter

Anyone who lived during the Super Famicom/SNES era remembers some great boxart. Although the NES era was subject to some pretty questionable boxes in its day, many developers wised up and didn't mind getting a little more car...

Admit it, you're a Yoshi ditcher

I've done it. You've done it. We've all done it. When you have to choose between Mario or Yoshi, it's always going to be Yoshi getting sacrificed for the greater good ... or for that damn Moon 3-Up x on the Cheese Bridge Area stage in Super Mario World.

What is the most life-changing game you've ever played?
