There really needs to be a Skylanders cartoon already

The entire Skylanders series appeals to me in a lot of ways, most of all how it reminds me of cartoons I used to watch as a kid. This latest trailer for SWAP Force really shows off what I mean by that, and really makes me wi...

Let's take a look at the non-swappable new Skylanders

Okay first of all the creature in the header here looks like something from a nightmare. Just, so creepy. Well whatever it is, it's one of four new Skylanders playable in SWAP Force. Two of them are also just normal Skylander...

Skylanders Swap Force is surprisingly more fun than evil photo
Skylanders Swap Force is surprisingly more fun than evil
by Steven Hansen

Activision’s Skylanders franchise has always smelled of a money grab to me. Copperish, like the smell of old pennies scrounged up by hard-working parents so little Linda Anne can have all the newest and coolest Skylanders characters while mom and dad work three jobs amidst recession. Jim Sterling is rather partial to the plastic lot, however, so they can’t be all bad, right?

In fact, they’re not. The new Skylanders: Swap Force is indeed rather cute and pretty fun. Vacuous, but quaint enough.

Skylanders is videogames as toys; or, Toys: The Videogame. I guess I forgot that videogames practically were, once upon a time. It’s no less inane and gimmicky and capitalistic than the stupid garbage we pestered parents for 20 years ago, but it’s a heck of a lot more polished and less likely to break like the slot cars I took around hairpin turns too quickly causing them to go flying off the track. Plus, what can be more embarrassing than having paid money for pogs?

First Skylanders hits Japan in July, gets Wii U port

We are so used to waiting insufferably long periods of time for Japanese games to be localized and brought out West that we often imagine Japan as this floating island of privilege and good fortune. How easily do we forget th...

Merging toys and videogames with Skylanders photo
Merging toys and videogames with Skylanders
by Hamza CTZ Aziz

Who knew actual physical toys would propel a videogame to become the number one selling Activision title (so far) this year and generating over $200 million in sales? Developer Toys for Bob struck gold with its ingenious idea of merging the world of real toys and videogames together with the Skylanders series, and the momentum is still going strong leading up to the release of Skylanders Giants, the first sequel to last year's Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure.

I paid a visit to Toys for Bob's offices just north of San Francisco recently to speak with co-founder Paul Reiche, and I found out the rich history of the company, how the Skylanders toys are made, and why creating toys with high-quality care is more important than saving costs.

Review: Skylanders Giants photo
Review: Skylanders Giants
by Chris Carter

Skylanders was one of the biggest surprises of 2011. Pretty much everyone expected it to be a cheap cash-in of 90s nostalgia to sell toys to unsuspecting kids -- and boy, were we wrong.

It was actually a pretty fun, serviceable action game, and the toy craze took off like wildfire. Now here we are in 2012 with the sequel, featuring even bigger Skylanders and even more toys.

In light of this, I have bad news for you folks: it's time to break out your wallets again.

Warning: this kids' Spyro costume is f*cking nightmarish!

E3: What's new with Skylanders Giants photo
E3: What's new with Skylanders Giants
by Hamza CTZ Aziz

Did you know that last year's Skylanders: Spryo's Adventure had the best single-year sales of any new children's IP ever in America? I figured the game would do well, but not to such a crazy extent!

Obviously, Activision has a successful new franchise on their hands and will continue the Skylanders story with Skylanders Giants. There's a ton of new additions, the biggest being the new giant-sized playable Skylanders heroes.

Talking to Women about Videogames: You! Like what I like! photo
Talking to Women about Videogames: You! Like what I like!
by Jonathan Holmes

[Talking to Women about Videogames is a series where Jonathan Holmes talks to different people who are women about the biggest videogame news of the week for some reason.]

I'll never forget when the first trailer for Uncharted 3 hit. It featured a table, some books, and a logo, and that's all it took. People were already declaring that it was their game Game of the Year 2011. I couldn't believe how sure they were that they would enjoy the game that much, but more so, that they were ready to compare the game to every other game in 2011 then declare that Uncharted 3 is the best

Since then, I've seen people do the same thing with The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Modern Warfare 3, and any number of high profile releases. It's such a puzzle to me! There's no other weirdness in the world quite like it. The only thing I can compare it to is the kind of team mentality that you see with sports fans when they announce that their team is going to "take it all the way this year" before the season has even started.

What's even weirder is when people attack others for being into (or not into) these games that haven't even come out yet. People are getting mad each other for saying that Battlefield 3 is better than Modern Warfare 3, a game that none of them have played. People are telling others on a daily basis that something is wrong with them because they aren't ready to declare Skyrim as the best game of the year, a good week and a half before the game even comes out. This kind of thinking is getting more and more common in gamer culture.

I think I know why.

The DTOID Show: Yell At Master Chief & Skyrim Impressions photo
The DTOID Show: Yell At Master Chief & Skyrim Impressions
by Max Scoville

Hey gang! We're alive, somehow, even after the events that took place this weekend. If you missed it, we did a 24 hour Extra Life livestream to raise money for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, and YOU GUYS donated over $6,000. So you rule. Here's an animated GIF of me getting punched in the junk.

Today, we run down the week's releases, including Batman: Arkham City, the adorable new Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure, and Dungeon Defenders. Tara discussed the new "shout stuff" feature in Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary. After that, I discussed some of the highlights of my time playing The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, and I implore you to go read my full preview here.

As always, get at us on Twitter, Facebook, and the Tubes Of You. Let's do this again sometime. How's Wednesday night?
