Recently, John Walker at Rock, Paper, Shotgun wrote a compelling article on SimCity, and how Electronic Arts' maintenance of radio silence has demonstrated total effectiveness in getting everybody to shut up. The basic argument is that any controversy can be sufficiently buried, provided those involved keep their lips glued and wait for the media to wander off bored. 

"Silence is a powerful weapon in the industry," Walker wrote. "The mad truth is, when it comes to gaming controversies, if you ignore it it will go away. This article is a fairly futile attempt to not let it, and to make sure our readers know that EA and Maxis never spoke to us, never responded to any of our questions, and never sent so much as a statement."

This is, sadly, a very stark reality in the game industry. No matter how badly a publisher screws its customers, no matter how controversial a game release, all a company has to do is close ranks and hold a phalanx position until the attackers stop poking -- and they will

It wasn't much of a surprise when Electronic Arts was recently voted the Worst Company in America by readers of Consumerist for the second year in a row. Though the game publisher's sins are arguably less substantial than those of their competition, nerds have soundly declared that borked SimCity servers are officially worse than the predatory housing loan tactics responsible for the current financial crisis. 

Regardless of whether you agree with EA's win, it's obvious that gamers really dislike this software giant. Let's take a look at the reasons why.

Electronic Arts may have been one of the last big wielders of SecuROM, and SimCity's online woes reek of it, but EA Labels president Frank Gibeau claims to hate DRM. According to him, such anti-piracy measures have failed, and thus had no impact on the decision to force SimCity online. 

"DRM is a failed dead-end strategy; it's not a viable strategy for the gaming business," he told GI.biz. "So what we tried to do creatively is build an online service in the SimCity universe and that's what we sought to achieve. For the folks who have conspiracy theories about evil suits at EA forcing DRM down the throats of Maxis, that's not the case at all."

Gibeau went as far as to call SimCity an MMO, claiming, "You don't build an MMO because you're thinking of DRM--you're building a massively multiplayer experience, that's what you're building."

A couple weeks ago, I posted my review of SimCity on ScrewAttack. I gave the game a 1/10, which is the lowest I've ever scored anything.

That review sparked a surprising amount of controversy amongst one of my roommates who claimed that it was completely unfair not to wait until the problems with the game were fixed and everything had been ironed out. By now, I'm sure he's sick of me saying this, but I can't really see the other side of this particular argument.

When Fallout: New Vegas was released, with what was for many, game-breaking bugs, who gave Obsidian the benefit of the doubt? I cannot recall a single instance where anyone ever waited to release a review just so that the developers could finish working out the kinks. Collectively, when someone borks a release, we say, "Tough luck, you should have waited." Why is anyone expecting an exception for SimCity?
