So long and thanks for all the man sweat, QuakeCon 2012

Despite being 100+ degrees outside in Dallas, Texas all week, we somehow survived QuakeCon. Maybe having amazing A/C in the Hilton had something to do with it. I had low expectations going to QuakeCon this year, but was surpr...

So much Bawls in this QuakeCon 2012 image gallery

QuakeCon is over, but we haven't left without some memories: Stressing over a lost laptop, eating some amazing food (not P'zolos), and chugging some warm, disgusting 5 Hour Energy. Here's our photographic proof that QuakeCon ...

QuakeCon: This is the Rise of the Triad that you remember photo
QuakeCon: This is the Rise of the Triad that you remember

I drove up to QuakeCon expecting a great Doom 4 reveal. Not Rise of the Triad. On the way, a couple thoughts occupied my mind but mainly, "Everything that defines the original Doom games at this point are so based in archaic game design that no sane developer would bring those ideas to the market now."

Well, call Interceptor Entertainment insane because that's exactly what they are doing with its Rise of the Triad reboot. Keycards, large open maps, and the endless slaughter of Nazi-occult are what ROTT was all about in 1995. And it's what it's all about in 2012.

Top five PC rigs of QuakeCon 2012 photo
Top five PC rigs of QuakeCon 2012

One of my favorite things to do at QuakeCon is stumble across the labyrinth of cables, PCs, and people contained within the BYOC (Bring Your Own Computer) room, searching for the most noteworthy, custom rigs.

Even with the room at max capacity, turning away an unprecedented amount of people in the event’s history, I was disappointed to find a lot less interesting rigs this year. Some of this is due to seeing returning ones from last year’s list (Minecraft Station, Neon Rig). Regardless, the ones that did make this list really impressed me.

These new Dishonored screens will disturb you

We got hold of some new images for the upcoming Dishonored, including some rather disturbing ones from the Lady Boyle mission I recently previewed. That baby mask is really something. I'm glad I didn't come across it during m...

Leave it to id Software mastermind John Carmack to make the industry change their opinion of virtual reality. Though Duct tape and an eight-year-old game are part of his presentation of the much tweeted about Oculus Rift VR goggles, they speak volumes of both the product’s current state and Carmack’s approach.

QuakeCon Preview: Going to hell in Doom 3's Lost Mission photo

In 2004, Doom 3 was a disappointment. It neither captured the speed of the original game or the lofty cinematic ambitions it tried to chase after. Instead, it was a slow, methodical shooter that leaned on its horror elements far more than previous games in the series. The game was at its best when it left the tight corridors of the space station and took the player back to hell -- thankfully BFG Edition's exclusive Lost Mission expansion returns to this setting while offering a lot more.

Russian text, a neon colored flickering background, and haunting ambient music. Hotline Miami's title menu makes a strong first impression that can be mostly summed up in “WTF?” Even down to its nonsensical title, Hotline Miami is a strange game but, unlike its creator's past projects, it’s a focused, narratively driven game where all the obscure elements continually build a bizarre, twisted world and fun game.

QuakeCon Preview: Dishonored is still amazing. Who knew? photo
QuakeCon Preview: Dishonored is still amazing. Who knew?

For a game as rich with ideas and exciting as Dishonored, it sure does demo poorly. It's the price a game pays when it tries to achieve a real sense of player agency, an original setting, and unique game mechanics. Though the game is inspired by Thief and BioShock, it feels brazenly new. Though developer Arkane Studios could limit the player options for a demo, I applaud their courage and honesty in saying, "This is the game. Deal with it!"

Luckily, I played the game a bit at E3 a couple months ago so I wasn't as hopelessly lost as some others at QuakeCon. I still botched the mission miserably, but at least I recovered from my mistakes this time. And in doing so, I got my first glimpse of what really makes Dishonored an evolutionary leap in stealth game design.

QuakeCon: Rise of the Triad multiplayer hands-on photo
QuakeCon: Rise of the Triad multiplayer hands-on
by Allistair Pinsof

I never thought I’d play Rise of the Triad multiplayer again, and I especially didn’t imagine I’d be playing it at QuakeCon with others right beside me. It’s a surreal thing but Rise of the Triad is coming back thanks to some loyal fans at Interceptor Entertainment and a reformed Apogee Software. Though I only got to play a pre-alpha build for a couple rounds, I got a good sense of the direction that this reboot is taking.

Yes there are jump pads and Excalibats, but there are new additions as well.

Dawnguard is now available for PC users photo
Dawnguard is now available for PC users
by Brett Zeidler

Making a surprise announcement at QuakeCon earlier today, Bethesda announced that the first expansion DLC for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim would be available for PC today. And sure enough, it's up on Steam this very instant for $19.99 (note: Skyrim is also half off for the weekend). Dawnguard has been hotly anticipated by PC and PS3 users ever since Xbox 360 have had their hands on it for about a month now.

Still no word on when Danwguard will make it to PS3 though, as that version appears to have been pushed back. They really have gotten the short end of the stick in terms of their version of Skyrim, eh? Hopefully it's not pushed back too far, those poor souls on PS3 just want to play some Skrim!
