Review: Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney

You got chocolate in my peanut butter! You got peanut butter in my chocolate!  Reese's Peanut Butter Cups are great. Personally, my favorite part is the edge, as long as you still get a little bit of peanut butter along ...

Review: Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy photo
Review: Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy
by Darren Nakamura

With five previous games and one movie under his belt, Professor Layton's reputation precedes him. Since 2007's Professor Layton and the Curious Village, Level-5 has been giving players control of the eminent gentleman Layton and his spry apprentice Luke on an almost yearly basis, with 2012's Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask making the jump from the DS to the 3DS.

Azran Legacy picks up after the events in Miracle Mask, completing the prequel trilogy that began with Professor Layton and the Last Specter. Though it changes up the format slightly, anybody who has played any entry in the series knows what to expect: hunting for hint coins and engaging in unconventional mind puzzles.

Layton series has sold over 15 million units

Level-5 has kicked the fans in the collective nuts with the complete tonal shift that is Layton 7. That must mean the games are on their last legs and can no longer make bank on Nintendo handhelds alone, right? Not likely if ...

Layton 7 for 3DS and mobile is not MY Layton

I... I brought this upon myself. I said that Layton Brothers: Mystery Room was a great game. I said it was an excellent iOS companion to the traditional Layton series. I never should have had faith that a major gaming compan...

Review: Layton Brothers: Mystery Room photo
Review: Layton Brothers: Mystery Room
by Tony Ponce

Despite my affection towards the Professor Layton series, I felt no compulsion to download Layton Brothers: Mystery Room when it released a couple months back. I'm not against mobile gaming, nor do I believe it's impossible for a traditionally home / handheld console franchise to make a successful leap into the mobile space. But I'm not so proud that I can't admit to still being somewhat biased.

And so weeks passed. While flipping through the App Store just the other day, I noticed that the first few chapters of Mystery Room were free. I figured it wouldn't hurt to give the game a quick spin to see if it deserved my money. Okay game, I thought, convince me!

Mystery Room does exactly what a good spin-off ought to do, which is to craft an experience distinct from yet complementary to the mainline series. With a focus on solving murders rather than "I haff twelve metchsteek" puzzles, it's less Professor Layton and more Detective Conan -- a blend of anime antics and crime drama that works perfectly on a mobile platform.

Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney announced for US, EU photo
Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney announced for US, EU
by Chris Carter

[Update: European release also confirmed.]

Late last year, Japan got an amazing crossover in Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney -- leaving everyone else in the dark as to when it would be announced worldwide. But due to today's Nintendo Direct, we now have full confirmation -- Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney will be hitting the Nintendo 3DS in 2014.

This is one of the biggest releases on the 3DS, so it's a huge win for portable fans everywhere. I can't wait to dig into it!

The Ballad of Sexy Layton (and Sexy Luke)

There isn't much to say about this that isn't better expressed through song, but there is one interesting piece of trivia to share. Sexy Luke is played by Capcom Fan Art legend and former Boondocks artist [name withheld per request]. That's pretty awesome. Other than that, I don't have much to say. Just watch the video.

Review: Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask photo
Review: Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask
by Matthew Razak

When Disney started re-releasing all their classic animated films in 3D because they like money and their classic films are really worth watching again in the theater, I wrote this review of the 3D release of Beauty and the Beast for Flixist. I bring this up for two reasons. The first is so that you're fully aware that I'm recycling a joke here, and the second is because that's exactly what Professor Layton and the Mysterious Mask is.

This is Professor Layton... in 3D. Do you like solving puzzles, charming art work, quirky characters, and ridiculous mysteries? Then you like Professor Layton and you're going to like him in 3D. If you don't enjoy those things, you've probably figured that out by now anyway. Having him in 3D is most likely not going to change your opinion of him unless the prospect of depth really makes you reconsider your love of puzzles.
