Trends of this Generation: Gamification photo
Trends of this Generation: Gamification
by Daniel Starkey

Leading up the possible PlayStation 4 announcement on February 20, I've been looking into some paradigm shifts we've seen over the past generation. This is stuff that will likely be with us for a while; these are things that I think will continue on for at least a decade to come.

So far, we've taken looks at motion controls, consoles becoming more like all-in-one media centers, and eSports. Today I want to briefly talk about achievements and gamification.

Games to play with your boyfriend on Valentine's Day
by Caitlin Cooke

Valentine's Day isn't always about getting taken out to dinner and receiving fancy treats and trinkets. Okay, well maybe it is, but who's to say that you can't get a little gaming on the side?

Consider spending some quality time with your boyfriend by reeling him into the following co-op games. If he resists, consider your future with him wisely...

Del Toro is a Valve fan, GlaDOS movie voice is authorized photo
Del Toro is a Valve fan, GlaDOS movie voice is authorized
by Chris Carter

If you've seen the trailer for Guillermo Del Toro's upcoming film, Pacific Rim, you might notice a little someone popping in to lend a guest voice. Yep, Portal's classic crazed computer GlaDOS is making a cameo appearance -- at least, a voice based on GlaDOS will be.

After the trailer first debuted, many gaming fans were keen to note the homage, and were concerned that Valve may have a potential lawsuit on their hands. Well, that's not going to happen, according to the Toronto Sun, as Del Toro obtained full permission from Valve to use the voice.

Also in the same article, Del Toro notes that his cancelled game inSANE is coming closer to a release. When asked about potential suitors, Del Toro states, “We are in talks with a very, very big company. I can’t say who, but it’s one of the big ones. They really responded to the game, they responded to what we were trying."

In-game Portal 2 map editor planned for next year photo
In-game Portal 2 map editor planned for next year
by Jordan Devore

Valve has divulged what's next for Portal 2, following the recent release of the "Peer Review" add-on: "an easy-to-use" map editor that's expected to come out in early 2012.

This editor will hopefully push crowdsourcing a step forward, since it's said to let players "view, play, and vote" on community-created single-player and co-op test chambers "with a simple click."

There was no mention of applicable platforms, though I suspect Valve is still trying to figure out if this stuff is feasible on consoles. That'd be swell.

Final part of Portal 2 soundtrack now free to download photo
Final part of Portal 2 soundtrack now free to download
by Conrad Zimmerman

Have you ever heard of drip marketing? The idea behind it is that you have an asset that people want, often information but it could be anything, and you keep people engaged with you and the product you're marketing by slowly feeding them tiny portions of the full product for free. It's one of the most effective means of creating customer loyalty.

In a related note, the third and final portion of the Portal 2 soundtrack has just been released by Valve. You may now go and pick up the tracks you're missing or download the entire 64-track release in one easy file. Go forth and consume, consumer.
