Origin is doing Steam's 'free-to-play' weekend program now

You know how Steam has been running its "free weekend" program for ages, where you could play a (typically) big release over the course of a few days without paying? Well EA's Origin platform is adopting the same program, sta...

Dead Space is free if you're willing to put up with Origin photo
Dead Space is free if you're willing to put up with Origin
by Jordan Devore

In an effort to get you to finally install Origin, Electronic Arts has begun a new On the House promotion in which "full games, expansions, and more" can be downloaded for free.

The first selection is one those who can deal with horror games ought to play: Dead Space.

Frankly, I'm not sure what else would convince someone to play this for the first time in 2014 other than it being given away for free. While Visceral lost its momentum with Dead Space 3, the two prior games are absolutely worth playing for genre fans -- they hold up well to this day.

Why Titanfall will be my next big gaming obsession photo
Why Titanfall will be my next big gaming obsession
by Hamza CTZ Aziz

It was the beginning of 2013 when I finally just got tired of the competitive aspect of first-person shooters. It's been my favorite genre ever since the GoldenEye 64 days, but over the last few years I've just been losing more and more interest in them. That's not to say there haven't been some great competitive FPS games of course. PlanetSide 2, Tribes: Ascend, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, and Halo 4 were some of the last ones I really got into, and while they were great, they just weren't able to hold my interest for long.

And outside of playing them for the purpose of coverage on Destructoid at preview events, I didn't even touch Call of Duty: Ghosts or Battlefield 4's multiplayer after they launched. Playing the preview builds was enough for me, a "been there, done that" sort of feeling.

Titanfall, though -- it's the game-changer for me. I've played it in shorts bursts at E3 and PAX, but last week I got to go hands-on for several hours, and feel confident in saying it makes me feel as if I'm rediscovering the genre like I did in the Nintendo 64 days.

by Hamza CTZ Aziz

[Update: The Titanfall beta kicks off on February 14 for the Xbox One and PC as revealed by this new trailer. There will be two maps available, and three modes which are Attrition (team deathmatch), Hardpoint Domination, and a Last Titan Standing gametype where everyone starts in a Titan in a round-based mode that ends when one team has lost all of their Titans as there is no respawning or replacement Titans.]

You will be emailed by EA no later than 11:59PM PST on February 17 if you've been selected to enter. You also have until February 14 at 4PM PST to register for the beta period. Good luck!

For those of you that don't make it in you can expect some coverage of Titanfall's beta to appear this week on Destructoid, and we'll be doing some live gameplay of Titanfall on our Twitch channel too.

Preview: Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare photo
Preview: Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare
by Alessandro Fillari

How weird was it seeing that reveal trailer for Plant vs Zombies: Garden Warfare at last year's E3? Plants vs Zombies was known for its focus on strategy and quirky humor, so it was a pretty surprising move for the developers at PopCap Games to bring such an interesting twist to their hugely popular franchise. As a fan of the series, I was mostly curious to see how it would translate from a tower defense style game to an online focused shooter.

But strangely enough, the transition worked out surprisingly well. And then some. Using the Frostbite 3 engine, PopCap Games took a chance and made its first foray into 3D, bringing along many of its characters from the series. EA invited some the press out to try a new build of the class-based shooter Garden Warfare and it turns out it's still just as strategic as ever.
