Club Nintendo is shutting down photo
Club Nintendo is shutting down
by Chris Carter

[Update: Nintendo has provided an FAQ on the closure. Information will not be transferred to the new program. Your new elite status gift will be available between April 1 and April 30, 2015.]

After more than six years, Club Nintendo is shutting down.

Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of sales and marketing, states, “We thank all Club Nintendo members for their dedication to Nintendo games and their ongoing love for our systems and characters, We want to make this time of transition as easy as possible for our loyal Club Nintendo members, so we are going to add dozens of new rewards and downloadable games to help members clear out their Coin balances.”

Nintendo will add more physical rewards in February, and Flipnote Studio 3D will be free for all at that time until June 30. You will not be able to create a new account after March 31. At some point this year a new loyalty program will be announced.

This is a huge shame. We've all complained about some of the bad rewards and availability of some items, but I've personally been a member since the start, and have earned some really cool gear over the years. I hope the new program is announced soon.

Australia gets second wave of Majora's Mask New 3DS units

Nintendo's Australia and New Zealand region Twitter account noted that, as is the case elsewhere, "Due to overwhelming demand, New Nintendo 3DS XL Majora’s Mask Edition is currently unavailable for pre-order in AU/NZ." ...

Little Mac's true calling revealed photo
Little Mac's true calling revealed
by Jonathan Holmes

Believe it or not, but someone at Nintendo actually liked the Captain Falcon's ass tribute amiibo video we did last month. Thanks to that happenstance, I ended up with an extra Little Mac amiibo a couple of days ago. I felt it was my solemn duty to take this fortuitous event as an opportunity for video production, but how do you follow something like Captain Falcon's ass? Rapping about parts of Mac's body would just end up feeling derivative and tacked on.

Or would it?

If Nintendo likes this episode of Samba de Amiibo as much as the original, then expect to see more amiibo music videos from Destructoid in the future. I'm also thinking of pitching Samus and Sagat to them for release on Nintendo Video. Do you think they'll go for it?

Report: Rosalina is coming to Target on January 30

Nintendo is still quiet on the exact release dates of many upcoming amiibo. It's really annoying. But thanks to an intrepid Target employee, we may have our first lead on Rosalina. As we know, she is exclusive to Target, and ...

Those Mario Party 10 amiibo are up on Amazon

It was announced last week that Mario Party 10 would be getting its own amiibo line. The good news is that every existing character in said sub-series (Peach, Yoshi, Bowser, Luigi, and Mario) would be interchangeable wit...

Samus and Sagat: Smash Bros. can be bad for you photo
Samus and Sagat: Smash Bros. can be bad for you
by Jonathan Holmes

No matter how hard I may try, I can't change. I'll sit down at my desktop and think "Hey, maybe I should write a script for show like 30 Rock?" and before I know it, I have Samus and Sagat at the kitchen table talking about how it's not always good to stay up all night playing Super Smash Bros

People get mad at guys like George Lucas and Thom Yorke for not giving fans what they want, but I've got to imagine that they can't always help it. We're all stuck with our brains, and we can't help but make the things that come out of those brains. If I could just choose to write a sitcom like 30 Rock, I would. Instead, I wrote Samus and Sagat. I hope you like it.

Thanks to Linzb0t for the fantastic logo, EndShark for the amazing animations, Stemage of Metroid Metal and SoulEye for the theme song, Bob Ross for shooting and editing the thing, and of course Maddy Myers for being Samus. You all have real jobs and you didn't have to take the time out to help me with yet another weird video project. It means the world to me that you were willing to take the risk on our team-up. I owe you big time.

That goes double for all of you out there who called for Sagat to come back and were willing to give this new series a shot. I'm lucky to have you. If you want more of this show, be sure to spread it around. We'd like to make more of these if we can.

Game-within-a-game hinted at for Splatoon

Splatoon is shaping up to be Nintendo's most bold and explosive new intellectual properties in recent memory. Nintendo is often accused of never publishing new I.P., though these accusations are often coming from folks who on...

Yet another Majora's Mask 3D trailer to tide you over

Nintendo sure has hit the marketing hard for Majora's Mask 3D in the few days since its wildly popular Direct. It seems like the 3DS remake has been everywhere lately. There's just under a month to go until release, and it remains to be seen whether there's enough steam to push the hype train at full power for that long. Final stop: Termina.

Are you still going to upgrade to a New 3DS? photo
Are you still going to upgrade to a New 3DS?
by Chris Carter

When the New 3DS was announced, we held a poll asking you if you wanted to pick it up. 36% of you said "yes," 29% said "no," and 34% said "it depends on the exclusives." Now that Nintendo has debuted a bunch of news with its recent Nintendo Direct, did you switch your view?

So what's changed? Slight improvements for upcoming games like Majora's Mask and Monster Hunter 4 -- which basically involve faster boot times and a c-stick to control the camera. Also, Xenoblade Chronicles on 3DS actually has a release window, and the on-board amiibo functionality has been highlighted with games like Code Name S.T.E.A.M. Keep in mind though that an amiibo adapter is still planned for "non-New" 3DS units at some point (the current rumor is between amiibo waves 3 and 4).

On the negative side, the prospect has gotten worse for some, as it has been announced that there will be no AC adapter included, and the XL is the only model that's going to be released in the US.

With all this in mind, do you still want it, still hate it, or have you come around to it by now?

Campy old Zelda CD-i games imagined as Hyrule Warriors DLC

I unboxed the New 3DS XL and tickled its sensitive nub photo
I unboxed the New 3DS XL and tickled its sensitive nub
by Bill Zoeker

After a Nintendo press event yesterday, I was sent home with a review unit of the New Nintendo 3DS XL. I figured it would be a good idea to record my opening of it so that I could share my trademarked cynical indignation with you all. So, sorry about that. But, you get to see what thing looks like right out of the box! Shiny toys!

It's a pretty standard package, with the glaring exception of the lack of an AC adapter. Nintendo gave IGN the predictable company line, "Rather than raise cost of New Nintendo 3DS XL by charging consumers for a component they may already own, we are giving them the option to only buy if they need an AC adapter."

Cool. You know, except that this device is an upgrade of an existing device, and people might want to sell the obsolete model. Not to mention, people who don't already own a compatible power plug will be praying there will be one in stock when they go to buy the New 3DS XL, and will probably get stuck with a shitty third-party knock-off.
