The Last of Us multiplayer DLC is not okay photo
The Last of Us multiplayer DLC is not okay
by Darren Nakamura

[An earlier version of this piece had an inaccurate statistical description of one of the downloadable weapons. The offending paragraph has been updated for factual accuracy.]

I know, I'm late to the party. Despite being interested in 2013's The Last of Us on PlayStation 3, I kept putting off getting it. When the current-generation remaster showed up as a pack-in for the PlayStation 4 late last year, I finally took the plunge.

Even then, I played through the entire single player campaign before touching the multiplayer. I only recently got into the online Factions mode, but it has become my latest obsession. Taking the stealth/action/crafting/cover-based shooter gameplay and pitting players against one another is fantastic, and I anticipate it will keep me busy for months.

There is one small problem: the relatively recent multiplayer downloadable content contains some of the worst elements of free-to-play multiplayer -- exacerbated by the fact that The Last of Us is not actually a free-to-play game.

PlayStation owners loved Destiny more than any other game in 2014

The next multiplayer maps for The Last of Us will be free photo
The next multiplayer maps for The Last of Us will be free
by Jordan Devore

Naughty Dog has been working to address issues with long wait times in The Last of Us' multiplayer matchmaking and while progress has been made on that front, there's more left to do.

"Over the last two weeks, we've discovered that the most significant improvements may come from working with other teams at PlayStation to make updates to some of the existing matchmaking libraries," the studio wrote. As such, it's hard for the teams to nail down a time frame but we're likely looking at a matter of weeks, not months, until the necessary fixes are deployed.

With that mess still ongoing, Naughty Dog has decided that its next pair of maps for Factions will be released for free on PlayStation 3 and PS4. Not all bad news!

Free maps! And about those pesky matchmaking times… [Naughty Dog]

How to stop sucking at The Last of Us multiplayer photo
How to stop sucking at The Last of Us multiplayer
by Kyle MacGregor

Have you played The Last of Us yet? Maybe, maybe not. You probably should, though. It's really a lovely game. And it's now on PS4, which means there's an actual reason to use that thing as something other than a Netflix delivery service.

Once you pop that disc in, the first thing you'll probably want to do is check out the campaign and those shiny new graphics. Maybe then you'll move on to the Left Behind prologue chapter. It's nice too. At some point, though, you'll definitely want to check out the title's best kept secret -- the multiplayer. Yes, the thing referenced in this article's headline. It's the wonderful caramel and nougat center to this delicious chocolate bar.

I almost made the mistake of assuming it was tack-on. I almost wish I did. The disc has scarcely left my PS3 over the last year because of it. I've spent a lot of time with the multiplayer. More than I'm proud of, really. And in that time I've noticed some things -- things that might help players suck less. And because I'm such a saint, I figured I'd share the fruits of my obsession with you, dear reader.

These things are the worst. Don't do these things.

Can you tell the difference between Last of Us PS3 and PS4?

I can't. Okay, okay, there's definitely some extra clarity in the brickwork and people look a bit more yellow than pink.
