The Steam Holiday Sale is on: Ground Zeroes, Dark Souls II, and more

For some of us, the year-end Steam Holiday  Sale is the one that matters. It's where I tend to buy most of my PC games for the year, which is a nasty habit considering how few of them end up in my library unplayed and un...

Sportsfriends hits Steam on Friday, but Johann Sebastian Joust isn't playable in Windows

I was under the assumption that Sportsfriends was on Steam already and had been for a long time, but it's not -- hardware issues have slowed the Windows/Mac/Linux release until now. The four-in-one local multiplayer game hits...

Hollow Knight has about a day left to hit some stretch goals

Hollow Knight's Kickstarter enjoyed a healthy beginning, keeping up a pace to hit the base funding goal of $35,000 AUD well within its run. For the final week of the campaign, developer Team Cherry has released the above tra...

Brutal turn-based survival game NEO Scavenger out now

I kept seeing NEO Scavenger pop up Twitter yesterday, and now I know why: it's just come out of early access and is now available on Steam and GOG.com for $14.99 (Windows/Mac/Linux). This is a turn-based survival game, and an...

I played Super Mario Bros.' World 1-1 as fat Sonic in Action Henk

If there's a level editor, World 1-1 from Super Mario Bros. will find a way. But before I get to that, there's a more pressing matter: fat action figures dressed up like Sonic the Hedgehog. Yes, we could use more of those in ...

New Fossil Echo trailer shows off its Oddworld influence

When we first saw Fossil Echo earlier this year, all we really had to go on was its sharp cartoon art style and a list of influences: Shadow of the Colossus, Studio Ghibli films, and Oddworld. Some of those influences were a...

Crossing Souls Kickstarter down to the wire, may come to PS4 and Vita

From the first time I saw footage of Fourattic's nostalgia-bomb of an adventure game Crossing Souls on Kickstarter, I knew something special was going on. Apparently, so did Devolver Digital, as the publisher ...

Civilization: Beyond Earth update is live, makes all my strategies obsolete

A pretty substantial update rolled out for Civilization: Beyond Earth earlier today, addressing some of the issues that the more hardcore Civ fans have had with the title. I took a read through the extensive patch notes and.....

Review: The Talos Principle photo
Review: The Talos Principle
by Darren Nakamura

While playing The Talos Principle, much of my time was spent sitting at my desk, chin in hand, deep in thought. I can only imagine the puzzled look on my face as I considered options, ran scenarios in my head, and generally did a lot more thinking than most games ask of players.

The Talos Principle consists of two largely separate interactions: physics-based puzzles and philosophical discussion. The real strength of the title is that while each could reasonably exist without the other, both elicit the above response in equal measure. The demand that the player really think is the thread that ties the whole game together.

Enter the Gungeon: Go get a big gun and kill the past

Devolver Digital has announced it is publishing Enter the Gungeon next year. Something about, "A gun...THAT CAN KILL THE PAST" just won me over. I don't even have to understand what it means. Plus there's table fli...

Waifu bartending: VA-11 HALL-A seems like the best dive this side of Catherine photo
Waifu bartending: VA-11 HALL-A seems like the best dive this side of Catherine
by Steven Hansen

I love Catherine. Part of the reason is its block puzzles. Part of the reason is its small scale, with most playable segments taking place in the homey bar Stray Sheep. VA-11 HALL-A--or Valhalla--is that same sort of bar, packed with regulars just trying to get through their nightmarish cyberpunk existence. Games don't always need to be bombastic save-the-world-'em-ups.

Over 20 clients will come into Valhalla, where you tend bar, serving an odd cast drinks as they serve up their life stories. And the bartending is as important to the stories as the stories are to bartending as you learn what clients like and, maybe, why that talking corgi is such a racist.

You can download and play the prototype here for free or at your own price if you can spare it. You can also pre-order the full game (and get a Steam key) for $5, which is less than the full game will be at launch. With that, you'll get the Prologue as well, which you can play until Sukeban gets the full game finished. Eight bucks gets you the Prologue, full game on release, and the soundtrack.

Devil's Bluff turns to Kickstarter for its online-only murder mystery

One of my favorite mechanics that is prevalent in tabletop games but not so much in videogames is having hidden roles. Battlestar Galactica's concealed Cylons and Werewolf's bloodthirsty lycanthropes induce real paranoia bec...

Steam has Alien Isolation for half price, cheap Skyrim

Ironically, the Kickstarter for Hollow Knight looks solid

I have had my eye on Hollow Knight for a few days, but had not yet pulled the trigger on highlighting it. It is a pretty 2D action game (though the color palette is a bit muted for my taste) starring some sort of insect-pers...
