PSA: King of Fighters XIII is on Steam, on sale photo
PSA: King of Fighters XIII is on Steam, on sale
by Steven Hansen

Last week, we reported on some leaks that suggested SNK Playmore's King of Fighters XIII would follow the trajectory of many contemporary fighters and end up on Steam. That has in fact happened. The Steam release touts, "vastly improved netcode," to abet online play and all comes bundled with all previously released DLC.

The gorgeous 2D fighter is listed on Steam at $29.99, though you can pre-purchase until September 13 for $24.99. While the game isn't slated to release until September 13, a lucky 300 users can also get in on a closed beta for the game by entering here. The website notes the drawing will be a lottery, "if the number of applicants exceed 300 people." I guess they're not expecting demand to be all that high. At least not out of the gate.

Any PC-only people looking to pick this one up? I'm terrible at fighters, but dug the heck out of King of Fighters XIII when it was release free on PS+. The animation and sprite work are phenomenal. It's also plenty fun, despite my lack of skill.

EVO 2013: Results, highlights, and all the hype photo
EVO 2013: Results, highlights, and all the hype
by Wesley Ruscher

Another year, another Evolution Championship Series under wraps. This year's premiere fighting game tournament was by far the biggest to date boasting over 3,000 participants from over 30 countries, stretching across nine of the most elite games in the genre.

Three days of non-stop action, that began with some of the most intense semi-final matches to grace the first day of the tournament ever. There were multiple bouts, especially in Super Street Fighter IV Arcade and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 that could have easily been grand final championship fights. It was definitely a rollercoaster ride of emotion from start to finish.

Day three culminated in another justifiably crazy day full of upsets and memorable moments. The amount of heart on display was inspiring. Reigning champs were dethroned and new kings of the stick were crowned.

Here are the winners and most hype moments of EVO 2013.

Review: The King of Fighters XIII photo
Review: The King of Fighters XIII
by Jonathan Holmes

I fell madly in love with The King of Fighters XII the first time I played it. After slogging through the slow-paced, polygon-based KoF: Maximum Impact games, it was such a relief to see the series return to its roots. The game featured some of the best 2D graphics I'd ever seen, and a fighting system that felt familiar, yet offered plenty of opportunities for discovery and creativity.

Then I actually got it home, and I realized how much it sucked that the game had no story mode, the smallest roster in series history (lacking fan favorites Mai, King, K' and many others), shoddy netcode, some balancing issues related to the new systems, and a load of other flaws and frown-makers. The core game was still fantastic, but the fine tuning and features that fans had come to expect from a full-priced retail fighting game release just weren't there.

Much like Street Fighter III: The New Generation, KoF XII felt like a promising, half-finished first entry in a fighting game franchise that was just begging for a fully-featured follow-up. That brings us to The King of Fighters XIII, the game that does its best to give us the experience that KoF XII should have been in the first place.
