The Nintendo 3DS is a system built around two simple concepts: portable 3D and dual-screen gaming. Unfortunately, the latter usually finds itself lent to making our experiences less intrusive by acting as a placeholder for maps, inventory, and other informative screens rather than evolving the creativity in design that is affordable with two screens.

Fractured Soul: Deep Void, by Endgame Studios, looks to change that by making each screen part of the action. In fact it throws the system's 3D capabilities right out the window in hopes of creating a unique action-platforming puzzle experience.

It goes without saying that Nintendo’s handheld needs games. As the system has been out for roughly eight months. one genre -- more than others -- that could use a little kick on the butt is the one that found such an impressive home on Nintendo’s previous handheld: the RPG.

From the minds at Renegade Kid, makers of the visually impressive Dementium series on the original DS, Planet Crashers 3D tosses out the dark demonic look for a cutesy family friendly vibe. Twisted Santa Clauses, a Halloween planet, and an unknown evil set on snuffing out the sun: these are just some of the bewildering things to encounter when Planet Crashers 3D smashes its way onto the Nintendo 3DS next year.

The Question: Would you pay $60 for a 2D platformer?

In our El Shaddai review this week, it was noted that quite a few comments expressed doubt that the game could be worth $60, due to the fact that it contained 2D platforming sections. This has confirmed a fear I've had that t...

Review: El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron photo
Review: El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron

El Shaddai is not Spanish for "the Shaddai." In fact, Latin America may be one of the only regions not represented by El Shaddai in some way. The game features British and American voice actors (including at least one Harry Potter alumnus), is directed by a fine artist from Japan, and is produced by a team of people from all three of those countries.

The cross-cultural appeal doesn't stop there. El Shaddai does for texts discarded from the Old Testament what God of War did for Greek mythology, except with visuals that look like something out of Child of Eden, with heaping loads of surrealism, 2D platforming, sexy dudes, dance numbers, transforming robots, and giant yellow hot dog people thrown in for good measure.

El Shaddai is constantly unpredictable. It's also consistently well-crafted. I'm just not sure all of you are going to like it.

El Shaddai has been delayed to August 16

Ignition has had to delay El Shaddai to August 16, pushed back from its original date of July 26. "Unforeseen logistical issues" have been named as the reason for this surprisingly late postponement notice.  European gamers will be pleased to know that the date for PAL territories is unchanged. It will be available September 9, 2011, as originally planned.

Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him away. [Genesis 5:24]

Every hero has something unique or extraordinary about him, and as Enoch, grandson of Adam, grandfather of Noah, titular character in El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron, you are no exception to that rule. You, a mere mortal, answered a divine call to become the Metatron, a person fit to sit on a throne next to God himself. No pressure.
