The Typing of the Dead: Overkill DLC goes Shakespeare

I was over the moon when The Typing of the Dead: Overkill was released, as I totally loved the original Typing of the Dead in concept and play. But maybe the text offerings were a little too vulgar for you and you'd appr...

Typing of the Dead: Overkill was almost never released

To pretty much everyone's surprise, Sega released The Typing of the Dead: Overkill just in time for Halloween. In this sequel of sorts to the infamous Typing of the Dead for the Sega Dreamcast and Arcade, players must put the...

The Typing of the Dead: Overkill is real and out now

The House of the Dead: Overkill revamped for mobile

Adapting light-gun series for use on a touch screen doesn't sound immediately appealing, but I'll try most things once. After all, The House of the Dead: Overkill was enjoyable for what it was back in 2009 on the Wii. F...

Shooting shirtless zombies in The House of the Dead 4 photo
Shooting shirtless zombies in The House of the Dead 4
by Jordan Devore

Upon first seeing The House of the Dead 4 playing on loop in a hotel nearby GDC 2012 proper, I pondered whether or not I had played the game before. Seeing as how I haven't made any trips to Japan, ever, it quickly became clear that no, I hadn't previously encountered the game. Rad. I've always liked the series.

Sega is bringing the game to PlayStation Network later this year with a fresh coat of paint and PlayStation Move support. For a title originally released in 2005, House of the Dead 4 holds up well, visually. It's got a faster pace and more zombies (enough to use grenades and not feel like a dick), but there's still campy dialog, those annoying jumping enemies, and giant bosses. It's decidedly House of the Dead.

We showed up uncharacteristically early to Sega's session, so the game was only playable using a standard gamepad at the time. Though far from the ideal scenario, it got the job done. Precise shooting wasn't particularly easy to achieve, but I liked using a quick up-and-down motion to shake off zombies.

I'm glad more gamers will have the opportunity to play this. It should be good, lighthearted fun and make for a solid PlayStation Network release.

House of the Dead III comes Valentine's Day, demo out now

If you're anything like me you don't have any plans for Valentine's Day this year and you also like killing waves of zombies. Those two things aren't normally related whatsoever, but this year Sega is changing that. On Valent...

Review: The House of the Dead: Overkill - Extended Cut photo
Review: The House of the Dead: Overkill - Extended Cut
by Jim Sterling

The House of the Dead: Overkill is one of my favorite Wii games. Not because it's of the quality of its gameplay or its narrative depth, but because it's one of the most gloriously stupid productions ever committed to disc. From its record-breaking profanity to increasingly ridiculous bosses, Overkill is shameless on a beautiful level.

Sadly, the game never sold too hotly, what with it being a vulgar and violent experience on the family-friendly Wii. With The House of the Dead: Overkill - Extended Cut, SEGA has a chance to bring its zombie-blasting, mother f*cking shooter to a more receptive audience.

However, one has to ask if this 3D-enabled HD upgrade is worth dusting off for a second crack of the whip.

SDCC: House of the Dead: Overkill - Extended Cut trailer

I love House of the Dead: Overkill. One has to respect a really shameless bit of entertainment that doesn't care how trashy it is so long as people are having a laugh. Looks like that shamelessness is perfectly preserved in its HD re-release, Extended Cut.  Here's a trailer showing off the game in all its gory, sweary glory. Have fun!
