Review: The Baconing
by Darren Nakamura

The Baconing is the third DeathSpank game. I was tempted to end the review with that sentence, as it really contains all the information many would need to make an informed decision about it. It can be either a wholehearted recommendation or a vitriolic condemnation of the game, depending on who's listening.

For those unfamiliar with the series, however, perhaps a deeper analysis is worthwhile. In that case...

Much like the Rapture, the Quickening, and whatever other religious world changing event is coming, The Baconing is upon us and we must get our collective asses back into church and pray that our savior Deathspank can save us.

Even though this is technically the third iteration of the Deathspank series, the team at Hothead wants to allure new players by not putting the obligatory "3" in the title. This way, the reinvention will give new players the opportunity to get involved with the world of Deathspank without having to feel like they will need to sit through the previous two. This is also Hothead's first game where they are in complete control of publishing as well as developing.

Swarm will warm its way into your heart photo
Swarm will warm its way into your heart
by Tara Long

"What are those little blue things?!" shrieked the tiny elderly woman guarding the front desk at the Larkspur Hotel in downtown San Francisco.

I found myself sitting at the hotel bar last week with Joel DeYoung, the Director of Game Technology for Hothead Games. He explained to me how the idea for Swarm, Hothead’s newest brainchild, evolved from nothing more than PhD research into a full blown commercialized game. That might explain why it’s been in production for nearly five years.

"They’re Swarmites. You control them to go places."

I love explaining video games to people over sixty. It’s like trying to communicate in another language. The best you can hope for is some vague understanding of hand gestures. Age differences aside, Swarm never once failed to capture my attention - or the concierge’s, needless to say.

You may have seen our coverage of Swarm at PAX last year where the trailer made its debut. We haven’t heard much about it since, but Hothead Games has been hard at work spreading the word in preparation for the game’s launch. There’s still no formal release date yet, but they say we can expect the game to be out by April. Personally, I can’t wait. In the meantime, check out the gameplay footage posted by Jordan earlier today.
