Time for a VIDEOGAME drinking game: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly!

Considering all of the different types of drinking games there are, I'm surprised there's not one centered around videogames. Sure, you can create your own -- like every time you hear "Welcome to the circus of values!&qu...

Destructoid review: Heavenly Sword photo
Destructoid review: Heavenly Sword
by Nick Chester

For a game that started life as a PC title bound for next-gen consoles -- the Xbox 360 among them -- Heavenly Sword has come a long way. The game's developer, Ninja Theory (formerly Just Add Monsters of Kung-Fu Chaos "fame"), had gone through a number of publishers before finally making a home with Sony Computer Entertainment, and the PlayStation 3.

Originally described as "Ninja Gaiden meets Half-Life," the title was once labeled "too ambitious" by one of the game's previous publishers. Some four years after its 2003 reveal, Heavenly Sword has finally seen the light of day, and -- in some people's eyes -- came with a huge responsibility: To prove the viability of the PlayStation 3.

With Sony openly acknowledging the lack of original, high-profile titles, Heavenly Sword's stunning visuals and high-impact gameplay has surely turned some heads. But is it a stepping-stone title that can finally put the PS3 on some gamers' radar, or is a repetitive God of War-clone that never truly reaches its full potential?

Contest: The Heavenly Sword letter opener - Aerox Wins! photo
Contest: The Heavenly Sword letter opener - Aerox Wins!
by Papa Niero

The staff at Destructoid realizes that some of you may just have digested a meal, so we will spare you from posting the winner of the Heavenly Sword Redhead babe of death contest we ran last week.  We challenged our readers to find the ugliest, most knocked-up woman possible that would be suitable for the kind of warfare that Nariko might undertake in the sequel... and we've had trouble sleeping since. If you're a brave soul, hit the comments to view the entries.  The winner of the sweet letter opener pictured above goes to comment #89 by Aerox.  Close seconds were 31, 2, and 71. The guy with the legitimate boobs and random body hair was certainly the most notable. You know, it's times like this when we must marvel at the knowledge made possible by the internet(s!).

I'd also like to announce that our PlayStation 3 contest drawing is tonight!  Please make sure your ballots are accurately represented in our reconcile tally.  We'll be spending the night drinking creating the paper ballots and will video the drawing.  Good luck!  If you don't win this time we will be announcing another console contest very shortly as well as our Halloween promotion.  Anyone dressing up as Mr. Destructoid to scare the chilluns, by chance?  It's about the only day of the year that I can go out in a bucket head and blend in, so I'm looking forward to it.  Miami's a fun place for shenanigans.

Last but not least, we'd like to thank everyone that downloaded our Bomberman character last week. We know it didn't go without a hitch -- there's a bug where you can play as Dtoid but saving the character is not possible unless you have the other pack installed. Needless to say a small patch is already in the works, no need to purchase anything additional.  As soon as that's all working properly we'll let you know!  It's a good thing we didn't release anything on the Wii (zing!).

A date with a fiery redhead: Heavenly Sword on September 12th photo
A date with a fiery redhead: Heavenly Sword on September 12th
by Dale North
I've always had a thing for redheads, but this particular one is really special. It's just a shame that I haven't had the chance to get to know her that well.

I first saw her at an industry event in 2006 -- I was there for work. This leggy redhead was across the room from me, and I think she batted her eyes at me. I tried to move towards her, but there were too many people in the way. We finally met, made contact for a very short time, and then I was swept up with work and had to leave. I've been thinking about her ever since.

We got another chance to meet last month, but our time together was very short. She's still as beautiful as ever, and she's easily as accessible as when we first met, but now she seems a bit more classy. She's that headstrong, 'take charge' kind of girl that I think I need in my life. I think we're going to seriously start seeing each other next month. We have a date on September 12th. I hope she doesn't stand me up.

I think this is the one, guys.

If you didn't get any of that: The PS3 exclusive, Ninja Theory developed Heavenly Sword will hit retail shelves on September 12th.

The evolution of Heavenly Sword: originally intended for the Xbox 360?

Ninja Theory, the developer behind one of the PS3's biggest showcase titles, was not always known by that name. Several years ago they were actually Just Add Monsters, but with only one Xbox title, Kung Fu Chaos, under their ...

50 ways to stab your lover: Heavenly Sword control scheme revealed photo
50 ways to stab your lover: Heavenly Sword control scheme revealed
by Papa Niero

While certainly not news, I thought this would be of interest to those readers who can't wait to get their filthy hands on the Heavenly Sword demo hitting the PlayStation network tomorrow. If anyone thought this game was a simple button masher they've got another thing coming -- the complexity and range of attacks available may be a little intimidating to memorize. Hope you've been playing Brain Age!

Destructoid has just received a set the world's most blurry photos leaking all of the menus as well as as most of the game's control schematics.  Alternating power and defense stances aside, the most peculiar thing about the button configuration is the ommission of a block button.  There isn't one.  Instead, Ninja Theory was smart enough to make Nariko put up her guard if you're standing still. Can someone send that memo to Kratos?

Other interesting features include physically shaking the Sixaxis controller when performing aerial combos and unlockable power moves called "Superstyles" -- instant death techniques which are rewarded for stylish gameplay (You build up HUD style meter by counterattacking instead of blocking). The naming convention of these attacks is also notable: While I doubt that the Flying Redemption will ever be as catchy as the Shoryuken, I can't wait to unleash some Swirling Cruelty on Andy Serkis.
