100% Series Retrospective: Resident Evil

[Read on for a description of every Resident Evil game ever released in the US, and my completion of them all in 2012.]

Why Resident Evil?

This year, Capcom is pushing out three entirely new Resident Evil games -- it's also the 15th Anniversary of Resident Evil: Director's Cut, which is the first RE game I fully completed. So why am I playing the series in the first place?

Honestly, Resident Evil 1 was one of the first times, outside of Metal Gear Solid and Tenchu, where I was completely immersed in the game and its world. I remember plotting out where I'd gone in the mansion in a custom map at 10 years old (no guides), and wanting nothing else than seeing "what's next."

I couldn't get enough of the unique scenarios the game offered, like dogs crashing through a window, or a terrifying snake appearing out of nowhere. It wasn't necessarily the claustrophobia and the slow-moving zombies that made me love the series -- it was the sheer amount of variety the game offered up.

If you haven't joined me on my Quests before, the way they work is pretty simple. It's kind of like a retrospective, but rather than just give you an overview of a franchise, I'll generally let you know what I thought of the game when it was released, and what I think of it now. If I didn't provide a complete vision of what the game is like before I replay it, I'll provide an "extended thoughts" section below each applicable entry. I'll update my progress in real time through my blog, and after I finish the entire Quest, I'll share it with you guys on the front page.

Something happened between 2002 and 2003. Gamers and critics suddenly stopped praising Resident Evil as one of gaming's best series and started calling it dated, clunky, and boring. Take Resident Evil Code: Veronica. Upon its release, GameSpot called it the best of its genre, but by the time the GameCube port came around in December 2003, the site labeled it "obsolete." You don't need to go further than the port's Metacritic page to see that GameSpot wasn't alone.

The crux of the criticism came down to convenience. Tank controls, slow combat, and limited saves were no longer common practice. But great games have never been about convenience -- they are about challenges to survive by learning your environment and abilities. Resident Evil does this very well, and no series entry did it better than the 2002 GameCube remake of the PlayStation debut.

Once and for all, let's lay to rest this misguided talk of Resident Evil's being obsolete. Not only is the series still relevant, it's timeless. The problem isn't with the game but with the critics who have gone soft and lost good judgment. And if I sound bitter, it's because of those critics that Capcom won't make another title in the style of this classic survival horror adventure.

A few days ago, we told you that an official Zelda art book containing the definitive timeline for the series would be released. Well, with the book out in Japan, that timeline has been officially revealed. All the historic events and videogames have been reconciled, with various splits into alternative universes. It's pretty crazy. 

The existence of an official "timeline" has been a source of frantic debate among gamers. Some have claimed no such thing exists, and even among those that do, there has always been arguments over the sequence of events. No matter what happens, nobody can ever seem to agree. 

One would think that this timeline will put an end to one of the oddest gamer controversies around, but something tells me that many still won't be satisfied.

For those of you who continue to ask Det. David Mills-style questions like "what's in the box?!" about the Wii U, a few more details have trickled out since yesterday's unveiling at Nintendo's E3 press conference. In addition to the previously revealed hardware specifications, we now know that the console's "proprietary high-density optical discs" will hold 25 GB of data -- the same as a single-layer Blu-ray Disc, the optical medium of choice for the PlayStation 3. (Whether the Wii U will read Blu-ray Discs, or even DVDs, remains unclear at this juncture.)

Along with that news came the announcement from microprocessor manufacturer AMD that it will be providing the graphics chip inside the Wii U. Aside from calling it a "custom AMD Radeon HD GPU" with a "modern and rich graphics processing core" that will deliver "high-definition graphics support; rich multimedia acceleration and playback; and multiple display support," the company gave no further details. This marks the continuation of a decade-long Nintendo/ATI/AMD partnership (AMD acquired ATI in 2006): ATI also designed the GPUs for the GameCube and Wii.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has also confirmed that the Wii U will feature no backward compatibility with GameCube games or accessories. Considering the proprietary connector on GameCube controllers, that's not surprising. However, he did announce during Nintendo's press conference that the console will support all Wii games and accessories, including the Wii Remote and Classic Controller.
