G4 cancelling Attack of the Show! and X-Play in December photo
G4 cancelling Attack of the Show! and X-Play in December
by Brett Zeidler

We heard last month that NBC was moving G4 away from game coverage, but it wasn't exactly clear how or when this would be happening. Just announced on G4's blog, we now know two of their oldest (and probably best) shows will be pulled from the air by the end of the year. Those being Attack of the Show! and X-Play.

Attack of the Show! has been around since 2005, and X-Play started in 2003 (back when TechTV still existed). For the next two months, both shows will still have new episodes where they will look back on the good ol' days and bring on celebrity guests to join Morgan Webb, Blair Herter, Candace Bailey, and Sara Underwood.

Make all the Cops and Cheaters jokes you want, but G4 made a huge impact on gaming culture with these two shows over the years, and this truly marks the end of an era. Best of luck to all those involved with both shows.

The DTOID Show: Fart Cat, Remember Me & Tara's Mom

Hey guys! Today's Destructoid Show was very exciting, because Tara's mom was here. Today we talk about G4 trying to become GQ, XCOM: Enemy Unknown's PC pre-purchase perks, Capcom's ten minutes of Remember Me, Rayman Jungle Run, Trials Evolution coming to PC, and most importantly: Fart Cat. Also, Tara's a backup dancer in Zumba Fitness Core, so go buy that right now.

G4 shows us why those birds are so angry

G4 Films has been putting together a "Epictober Film Festival" event this month, which concluded today with the short, "The Birds of Anger." It's an obvious homage to the 1963 classic The Birds and some little mobile ga...

G4 gets exclusive multi-year coverage deal with E3

G4 has basically bought E3 for the next few years, signing a deal that will grant it exclusive showfloor video coverage. Basically, they get a 24-hour live feed and everybody else can leave their video cameras at home.  Personally, I'm looking forward to the day that E3 just bans everybody else from attending and hosts the show in Adam Sessler's kitchen.

DirecTV drops G4 due to low ratings photo
DirecTV drops G4 due to low ratings
by Jim Sterling

G4 -- once a TV channel dedicated to gaming, now a TV channel dedicated to some things -- has been dropped by the DirecTV service after Nielsen data suggested it was one of the lowest rated networks in town.

“We are constantly evaluating our lineup in a new world where programming costs continue to rise at significant rates,â€Ě says a spokesman for DirecTV. “Since G4 is among the lowest rated networks based on the latest Nielsen data, we decided that it made sense to focus on preserving programming that is more relevant to our larger customer base.â€Ě

G4 seems pretty pissed, explaining that it offered DirecTV the same deal it had done for the past three years but that DirecTV plans to "deny G4 fans the only network that focuses on the popular gaming lifestyle."

It's a sad fact that any kind of specialty network is nearly always doomed to lose its identity or die. There's a reason why Dairy Queen sells burgers, and it's not because you need to wash down ice cream with a slab of beef. It's sad that every channel needs to eventually become the same thing in order to succeed, but that's the distinct impression I get when I look at most major networks these days.
