The Kickstarter for the Shantae: Half-Genie Hero, the HD re-imagining of the classic character for PC and consoles, is almost fully funded, though we're still pretty far away from snagging all the stretch goals. The most rece...

Tower of Heaven creator releases new game Pause Ahead

Do you remember Tower of Heaven? If the answer is yes, skip ahead to the next paragraph. If the answer is "no" because you never played it back in 2009, then you can (and should) rectify that immediately. It's not very long; ...

Review: Mega Man Unlimited photo
Review: Mega Man Unlimited
by Tony Ponce

I've been championing the fan game community since the day I joined Destructoid, yet I've never before anticipated the release of a fan game with as much fervor as I'd reserve for an official title until Mega Man Unlimited.

It's easy to claim "laziness" or "unoriginality" when talented garage developers apply their skills towards a take on a preexisting IP, but I contend that the best among them possess a great sense of direction for where said IP could go. Whether it's a previously unexplored mechanic in the context of the series or simply a streamlining of familiar concepts, fan games present a wealth of potential, thus it would be foolish to simply brush them aside offhand.

More impressive than a great fan game, however, is a great fan game that completely deceives you into thinking it's an official product. There's usually a "tell" that betrays the illusion -- original art assets that clash with the style of any borrowed assets, an overabundance of recycled music, controls or physics that feel uncomfortably off, etc. But if the deception is successful....

Not only did Mega Man Unlimited deceive me completely, it also may very well be one of the best Mega Man games ever made.

MoshiMoshi teaches kids about meth, death, and shooting

Colorful, ecstatic, and utterly bizarre, free indie shooter MoshiMoshi may be the oddest game you play today. Conceived at a Braingale game jam, MoshiMoshi is a brief but fun twinstick-style shooter with gaudy visuals and an...

A remake of Gun.Smoke is now available on PC for free
by Chris Carter

Yep, you're reading that right -- the classic Capcom game Gun.Smoke is now available for free should you feel like getting your nostalgia on.

For a freeware remake, it actually has a decent amount of options, including multiple resolutions and gamepad support.

The developer who worked on the project states that the goal was to keep the NES port intact rather than just rip assets from the arcade game. The lead dev played the original "over 100 times" over the course of remaking the classic, and it looks like it paid off.

Review: Westerado photo
Review: Westerado
by Fraser Brown

When I was still wee, I often found myself stuck in my grandmother's house, far away from friends and video games and left with little to do other than draw or read. Once I filled every piece of paper in the house with doodles and had grown tired of reading the same comic or book for the umpteenth time, I'd start browsing my gran's large collection of videos recorded off the TV. Almost all of them were cowboy flicks.

They've long since blended into one huge Western experience: grizzled men riding across the expansive, open plains of the untamed Old West, seeking justice, fortune, and adventure. They gambled, duelled, and frequently became sheriffs of small towns bereft of hope. I wished I could be like them -- just with better hygiene.

The last place I expected to relive these memories was on Adult Swim's website, but courtesty of indie developer Ostrich Banditos and their free flash game, Westerado, that's exactly what I've been doing. You should too, as it's one of the best Western games that you could hope to play.
