Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel's free Halloween content is live right now photo
Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel's free Halloween content is live right now
by Darren Nakamura

Last year, Borderlands 2 kicked off its Headhunter series of DLC with T.K. Baha's Bloody Harvest, a Halloween-themed mini-expansion that had players meeting up with zombie T.K. Baha and shooting a lot of pumpkins.

It looks like 2K is continuing the tradition with this year's Bloody Harvest Celebration, but rather than paid DLC introducing new areas, this one is a limited time event and is available right now as a free update. It alters the area Regolith Range to feature pumpkin-headed enemies, including a replacement of the boss Deadlift with Undeadlift. Get it? Playing through and can net players an exclusive gun called the Jack-o'-Cannon.

It's an interesting take on DLC, especially for a series that gets criticized for its handling of post-release content. Free stuff is hard to argue with, and I know the time constraint is going to get me to try it out quickly instead of putting it off. Sneaky.

Contest: Show us your Halloween costumes and win Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel! photo
Contest: Show us your Halloween costumes and win Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel!
by Mr Andy Dixon

[Update: Contest over! Random winner is jondier. Thanks to all who participated! Those are some good looking costumes :)]

Do you like dressing up for Halloween? I sure do! In fact, just a few years ago I went as Princess Peach. I was SO beautiful. (You can see the sexy evidence above. And that's my wife playing Rock Band in the background. She was dressed as Mr Andy Dixon.)

Anyway, if you're like me, half the fun of dressing up is showing off your costumes, and the other half is winning a free game for doing so! (The third half is scaring children. The fourth half is stealing their candy as they run away.) Well it just so happens that your beloved Robot Overlord found an extra copy of Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel hidden in his robo-shoe, and he's decided to hand it out at random to someone who posts a picture of themselves in their costume in the comments below!

Limit one entry per person, and you have until this Friday at 11:59pm Pacific to show us your stuff. All costumes are valid (meaning not just videogame-related ones), so don't feel discouraged even if you're going as Elsa from Frozen like every other f*cking little girl in the world this year. Winner will be chosen at random, but you must hold up a sign that says "DESTRUCTOID" in the picture so we know it's really you. International readers are welcome to enter, though we may ask you to pay for shipping if you win.

Double points if you dress up as Claptrap using only items you found around your house.

Good luck, and have fun!

Free PC game! Crusader: No Remorse and that might be Boba Fett photo
Free PC game! Crusader: No Remorse and that might be Boba Fett
by Brett Makedonski

Electronic Arts has discounted one of its games by an undefined divide by zero error percent, all the way from $4.99 down to free. Crusader: No Remorse is currently gratis on Origin for a limited time.

Crusader's about an elite agent that switched sides after finding out his employer was corrupt. Now he's out to take down the company he once worked for. Or something like that. More importantly, I'm pretty sure Boba Fett is on the box art for some reason.

GameStop is giving out Diancie for Pokémon X and Y
by Jordan Devore

Shiny Gengar is no more (hope you got yours!) but another distribution event for Pokémon X and Y has taken its place. Today through November 16 at GameStop, you'll be able to score a free code for the Legendary Rock/Fairy-type Pokémon Diancie.

Once Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are released on November 21, you'll then be able to bring your Diancie to a Pokémon Center in either game to obtain the Diancite Mega Stone necessary for its Mega Evolution. What's the new form look like? Less ... chunky.

Dress up like the bad guy in this free Shadow of Mordor DLC photo
Dress up like the bad guy in this free Shadow of Mordor DLC
by Jordan Devore

Monolith has released a free Power of Shadow DLC pack for Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor on Steam, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. Most notably, it includes an alternate costume for Talion that resembles the Black Hand of Sauron. Epic Runes are included as well:

  • One with Nature – Immunity to Poison attacks from Uruk Captains or Ghuls.
  • Ascendant – Double Focus Time for slow motion Ranged combat.
  • Elven Grace – Increased defense which halves the damage of enemy strikes.

More clothing options are good if, like Steven, you want to live out matchmaking fantasies or, similar to Nic, you want to become the Dracula of Middle-earth. (I love these guys.)

I'm holding off on Shadow of Mordor until the holiday break, I think. This seems like something I'll want to dig into for a week straight and never touch again. Ever do that?

Payday: The Heist is free on Steam today photo
Payday: The Heist is free on Steam today
by Jordan Devore

We told you way in advance that Payday: The Heist would be free to download (and keep!) on Steam for 24 hours, but the original date has since been moved up to ... today!

Claim your free copy here.

You know what this game is already, right? If not, it's the one about committing robberies with friends while wearing really creepy masks. Definitely worth adding to the ol' Steam library but it's also a freebie you might consider, well, playing. I know, I know -- crazy thought.

On a related note, Steam is hosting a free weekend for 10 games including the sequel to Payday. That promotion is live now and will continue until Sunday afternoon. Better prioritize.

GOG.com is giving away Aliens vs. Predator 2000 photo
GOG.com is giving away Aliens vs. Predator 2000
by Jordan Devore

For 48 hours, GOG.com is giving out free copies of Aliens versus Predator Classic 2000 to people who register their email address for the GOG Galaxy beta test. Easy enough.

But what is Galaxy, exactly? It's an upcoming DRM-free online gaming platform, as previously described here. Think of Steam as imagined by the GOG.com folks, essentially.

For the beta, "You'll be helping us to analyze and improve the performance of the multiplayer component of GOG Galaxy," hence the free game with multiplayer. Note that keys will be sent in batches so there will almost certainly be some waiting required on your part.

AVP 2000 looks dated but it's possible to get past that after a while. The last time I played -- three or four years back, I think -- it held up fairly well. Still fun after all these years.

XCOM, Payday 2, and eight other games are free to play on Steam this weekend photo
XCOM, Payday 2, and eight other games are free to play on Steam this weekend
by Jordan Devore

I like Steam's Free Weekend promotions in theory but I don't know that I've ever participated in one. That'll likely change tomorrow, beginning 10:00am Pacific, when 10 games become free to download and play on Steam until Sunday at 1:00pm Pacific. Here's the list:

  • Awesomenauts
  • Blade Symphony
  • Company of Heroes 2
  • Don't Starve
  • Grid 2
  • Injustice
  • Killing Floor
  • Payday 2
  • Trine 2
  • XCOM: Enemy Unknown

Some great games, right? I'd be curious to try out Injustice and Grid 2 as a casual player of fighting and racing games, respectively. If Awesomenauts and XCOM are out of your comfort zone, consider giving those two a try. You may just come to dig the heck out of 'em.

Relive that time Kirby was a golf ball with Club Nintendo photo
Relive that time Kirby was a golf ball with Club Nintendo
by Jordan Devore

Coming off of Kirby Super Star and Art Style: PiCTOBiTS, guess I should have lowered my expectations for this month's Club Nintendo digital game rewards. Too late. Actually, it's not all bad:

  • Wrecking Crew (Wii U) - 200 Coins
  • Kirby's Dream Course (Wii U) - 200 Coins
  • Zoda's Revenge: StarTropics II (Wii) - 200 Coins
  • Maboshi's Arcade (Wii) - 250 Coins
  • Kersploosh! (3DS) - 150 Coins
  • Brain Age Express: Math (3DS) - 200 Coins
  • 3D Classics: Kid Icarus (3DS) - 200 Coins
  • Donkey Kong (3DS) - 150 Coins

Tempted to go for the oddity that is Kirby's Dream Course. It's an isometric golf game in which Kirby is the ball, so, yeah. Kersploosh!, a game about falling, is worth a look too.

Add a shiny Gengar to your Pokémon collection photo
Add a shiny Gengar to your Pokémon collection
by Jordan Devore

Now through October 26, you'll be able to score a shiny Gengar holding Gengarite, the stone necessary for its Mega Evolution, at GameStop. Simply bring in your copy of either Pokémon X or Y for a free redeemable code.

If you're thinking of skipping this video, allow me to point out that it shows Mega Gengar spraying toxic throw-up ("Sludge Wave," officially) on a pack of Mime Juniors. It's what they get for being all small 'n' creepy. The move can't be learned in normal gameplay, for what it's worth.

This'll be a good get. But, leading into the Ruby / Sapphire remakes, I'm contemplating giving away (well, Wonder Trading) all of my Pokémon. Going in fresh. Decisions, decisions.

Dragon Age: Origins is free on Origin until Tuesday photo
Dragon Age: Origins is free on Origin until Tuesday
by Jordan Devore

Many of you haven't seemed too thrilled with EA's free game offerings on Origin, which is understandable -- they've been hit or miss. This one should prove a bit more compelling.

The standard edition of Dragon Age: Origins is free to download on Origin now through Tuesday, October 14. To be clear, if you get the title in that time, it's yours to keep and play as you like. (Some of EA's other promotions don't function this way.)

Yeah, the promo is clearly timed as a lead-in to Dragon Age: Inquisition's impending release, but that's fine. Just glad it's the original we're getting here instead of the sequel.

These free Octodad: Dadliest Catch levels are going to end in disaster photo
These free Octodad: Dadliest Catch levels are going to end in disaster
by Jordan Devore

Feeding watermelon to a hospital patient? What a nice guy, that Octodad. Such large, sharp forks he's got, too. It's a good thing he is an adult human with fully developed motor skills.

Octodad: Dadliest Catch was a treat, but I was left wanting more. Thankfully, more is coming, and it'll be here real soon. The adventures of our favorite secret octopus father continue with two new levels, Dad Romance and Medical Mess, releasing Tuesday for free on PS4, PC, Mac, and Linux.

What's more, Dadliest Catch will be half off next week on PlayStation Network, Steam, and the Humble Store. That brings the game down to $7.50. Pretty good.
