Enjoy these free remixed Spelunky jams photo
Enjoy these free remixed Spelunky jams
by Jordan Devore

Oh, cool! There's a new Spelunky EP up on Bandcamp and it's totally free, whether you're streaming or downloading. (Though you may want to consider tipping if you like what you hear.)

This is a nine-track EP with several guest contributions including one from Mega Man's Manami Matsumae. My favorite is "Smells like wet funk," and that's only partially because of the fun name.

Related: Spelunky is out on PS4 today. If you own it for PS3/PS Vita, this new version is free.

Friendly reminder: Go get yo' free games on Xbox Live! photo
Friendly reminder: Go get yo' free games on Xbox Live!
by Brett Makedonski

With the beginning of a new month, it's time that we all flip our calendars from that picture of an adorable kitten rolling around in the leaves to that picture of an adorable kitten sitting in a pumpkin. It's also time that Xbox Live Gold members should go ahead and swoop on their free games.

As a quick reminder, DICE's highly praised Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is available until October 15 on Xbox 360. On Xbox One, newly released indie cooperative platformer Chariot is free all month long. Chariot's one that you won't want to pass up, especially if you have a partner to sit on the couch and work through it with.

Xbox Live Gold subscribers would be remiss to pass these up. Go ahead and put on your Uggs, froth your pumpkin spice lattes, and queue up some videogames to play.

Contest: Win a code for Heavy Bullets on Steam!
by Mr Andy Dixon

Heavy Bullets launched on Steam a little more than a week ago (Dtoid review coming soon!), and we've got 15 codes to hand out to lucky community members!

This game looks absolutely nuts (see video above for proof), and early impressions I've seen have been very positive. If you'd like to win a copy and see for yourself, just leave a comment in this thread! You have until this Friday, October 3 and 11:59pm Pacific time to enter, and the contest is open to anyone on the planet Earth. Limit one entry per person.

Free update for Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare adds tweaked classes, tacos photo
Free update for Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare adds tweaked classes, tacos
by Darren Nakamura

Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare has already done right by its users by providing good post-launch support via free downloadable content, and it is continuing on that path with tomorrow's Legends of the Lawn update.

The DLC features a host of character variants that add options to both sides of play. Additionally, a new mode called Taco Bandits is included, which is described as capture the flag, but with tacos instead of flags.

Legends of the Lawn should release for PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One tomorrow, at the low price of zero dollars. You can't argue with that.

October's Games with Gold are Bad Company 2, Darksiders II, and Chariot photo
October's Games with Gold are Bad Company 2, Darksiders II, and Chariot
by Jordan Devore

Here are your Games with Gold for October. Xbox 360 owners with an active Xbox Live Gold account will be able to download Battlefield: Bad Company 2 for free from October 1 - 15, followed by Darksiders II from October 16 - 31. Xbox One owners will have the entire month to nab Chariot.

Bad Company 2 had a more lighthearted story than its contemporaries and the multiplayer was a total blast. For reasons that escape me, I completely lost interest in Darksiders II after a few hours -- need to try again, one day. And Chariot sounds like a good cooperative romp.

Does anyone else download this stuff even if they own the game on disc? I feel odd doing it.

Pac-Man CE DX+ is ridiculously good and free to play on Steam until Monday photo
Pac-Man CE DX+ is ridiculously good and free to play on Steam until Monday
by Jordan Devore

This week on Steam, you can check out the superb Pac-Man Championship Edition DX+ for free as Namco plays the part of a "friendly" drug dealer. The promotion lasts until Monday at 10:00am Pacific and in that time the game and its DLC are 66 percent off.

Building up a huge chain of ghosts -- a ghost train, if you will -- and then eating them all in the span of a couple seconds is so damn satisfying. See that image up there? Uh huh.

Just play this already. Cancel plans. Shun responsibilities. There is only time for Pac-Man, now.

Guild Wars 2 is throwing a free trial week soon photo
Guild Wars 2 is throwing a free trial week soon
by Jordan Devore

On Thursday, ArenaNet will kick off a week-long trial for Guild Wars 2. You'll be able to play the MMORPG for free from 12:00am Pacific on September 25 until 11:59pm Pacific on October 1.

Trial accounts can be opened ahead of time, so I'd suggest you go take care of that now to maximize your time. Note: there are some restrictions placed on trial players.

Just last week, community member Solar Pony Django put up a blog to generate interest in potentially starting a Destructoid guild. Take a look. Keep forgetting I own this game.

PS4 online multiplayer will be free this weekend photo
PS4 online multiplayer will be free this weekend
by Jordan Devore

Weekends sure are good at going by too quickly. It's only Monday morning and I'm already wishing it were the end of the week. Sony isn't helping, either -- its unlocking online multiplayer for PlayStation 4 owners who aren't subscribed to PlayStation Plus this weekend.

Those users will gain access starting Friday, September 26 at 12:01am Pacific and it'll carry through Sunday, September 28 at 11:59pm Pacific. All you need to do to take part is log into your system during those times -- simple as that. What to play, though.

Kill time with Bejeweled 3 now that it's free on Origin photo
Kill time with Bejeweled 3 now that it's free on Origin
by Jordan Devore

It may not carry the same weight as past "On the House" offerings like Dead Space or Battlefield 3, but the latest freebie from Origin, Bejeweled 3, is a great game in its own right.

The popular match-three puzzler is free to download for PC and Mac until October 28, 2014.

It's about what you'd expect -- both from the genre and Bejeweled, specifically -- but sometimes the familiar is all you really want. Lots of modes in this installment. It's pretty fun.

Download Halo: Reach for free with Xbox Live Gold photo
Download Halo: Reach for free with Xbox Live Gold
by Jordan Devore

Now through September 30, Xbox Live Gold subscribers can download Halo: Reach for free through Microsoft's Games with Gold program. And those of you with an Xbox One still have the rest of the month to nab the excellent Super Time Force. Just putting that out there.

Reach has the distinction of being the last Halo game I was even moderately into, though my memory of it is mostly hazy. I do recall struggling quite a bit toward the end of the game. Funny how of all the things I could remember about my playthrough, it ends up being the painful part.

Wolfire's cool, experimental FPS Receiver is free today photo
Wolfire's cool, experimental FPS Receiver is free today
by Jordan Devore

Wolfire Games' Receiver is a first-person shooter unlike any other I've played.

Instead of a quick button press to reload your gun, here, reloading is a much more realistic, multi-step process that requires effort on your part. As in, you'll need to actually practice. Also, levels are randomized and there are creepy drones out to get you. Good luck!

You can and should experience Receiver, if only for a few moments, especially now that it's free through the Humble Store. Offer's good for today only. Be sure to redeem your Steam key by September 29.

At long last, I'll be able to get a shiny Gengar photo
At long last, I'll be able to get a shiny Gengar
by Jordan Devore

Gengar only became my favorite Pokémon in the last few years, but now that it's my bestie, I don't see that ever changing. (Sorry, Feraligatr.) Matter of fact, I'd even be willing to step foot in a GameStop for a distribution event related to the ghostly Pokémon -- true love.

There are two events planned for Pokémon X/Y in the United States this year and both require leaving the house. The first one is for a shiny Gengar with its Gengarite Mega Stone, obtainable via a "special code card" at GameStop from October 13 - October 26.

The next event is for Diance -- claim yours from October 27 - November 16 at the game retailer. The Diancite Mega Stone isn't included here; you'll need to earn it in either Pokémon Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire once those titles launch on November 21.
