A Million Ways to Die in the West game has a million ways to wax nostalgic about retro games

Seth MacFarlane chooses to inject nearly every bit of media he touches with a rush of nostalgia from his childhood. I'm a little similar, but I'm nowhere near as rich. And I'm kind of on the fence about the upcoming movie A M...

McPixel developer's new web game is pure chaos photo
McPixel developer's new web game is pure chaos
by Jordan Devore

"Your car is falling apart in the middle of the night in the middle of a highway. Make sure not to die. This is important. Control the car using hand."

This is Night Rider Turbo, the chaotic new game from McPixel creator Sos Sosowski. It's his contribution to the Charity Game Jam and it's worth a few minutes of your time, or possibly many, many more minutes depending on how determined you are to compete on the leaderboards. Some maniac managed to drive for 36.853 KM!

The slightest twitch of your hand usually results in a component of your car being ripped off, and that's when the insanity begins. Night Rider Turbo can be grasped quickly given its simple premise, but that's not to say it's easy. Quite the opposite. This represents everything I love about browser-based games, and the soundtrack is excellent (hit the radio to cycle the songs).

High School, the Video Game High School videogame photo
High School, the Video Game High School videogame
by Tony Ponce

In last week's episode of web series Video Game High School, the character Ki created a videogame based on lead protagonist Brian D's troubled first week of class. In other words, it was a game adaptation of VGHS Season 1, appropriately titled High School Video Game.

Though that version of the game is exclusive to the show's universe, Joel Sinclair of Newgrounds used the art from the fake game to create a real one in Flash. Each event in Brian's life is represented as a clone of a popular NES game, such as Mega Man, Super Mario Bros., Punch-Out!!, and Contra. Not perfect recreations by any means, but you get the idea.

It's very short, so you can clear it in no time at all. Just something to occupy yourself on a lazy Saturday evening.

Super Mario Crossover 3.0 is finally out photo
Super Mario Crossover 3.0 is finally out
by Tony Ponce

Super Mario Crossover, the pixel-for-pixel recreation of Super Mario Bros. that features a selectable cast of NES stars, was all set for the big 3.0 update this past June. It was unfortunately delayed a month, but it is now available for your pleasure. Head on down to developer Exploding Rabbit's site to give the new revision a spin.

New to 3.0 are the levels from Super Mario Bros. Special, a Japan-only port / remake for the NEC PC-8801 and Sharp X1; a difficulty system that drastically alters level layouts; and more skins for levels and characters to make them look like various other games on the NES, SNES, Game Boy, and so on. More tweaks and skins are planned for the future, but this is likely the last big update.

Exploding Rabbit is now hard at work on Super Retro Squad, which follows the style of Super Mario Crossover only with original characters and levels. While originally looking like an NES game, the graphics have been beefed up to a more detailed 16-bit style, though it looks like there may still be skins to "downgrade" the look to 8-bit and handheld styles. The game will also feature four-player online and local co-op. You can check the new screens below.

Put on your ninja shoes, N v2.0 is playable now
by Darren Nakamura

By now, we've seen the big reveals of the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One, and I can safely declare a winner: PC. Why? Because just a few days ago, Metanet Software released a huge update to its diabolical ninja platformer N, aptly titled N v2.0. The kicker? It's totally free.

The update features new levels and an improved level editor, as well as the promise of "FUN-lockables," which can only be awesome judging by their name. You can play the browser version of N v2.0 on Kongregate, or download it from the game's official site.
