XCOM: Enemy Within is MEC-ing me crazy photo
XCOM: Enemy Within is MEC-ing me crazy
by Dale North

Being at gamescom has its perks, especially when it comes to having the first opportunity to play a newly announced game. Or in this case, a new expansion so big that it's essentially a new game.

2K officially announced expansion XCOM: Enemy Within last week. Slated for release on November 12, this expansion brings all kinds of fun new bits to XCOM: Enemy Unknown, including body modification, big ol' MECs, enemy counterparts called Mectoids, new resources, new maps, and much more.

As I'm sure you'll understand, I made it a priority to get my strategy loving self in front of a demo machine at the show.

XCOM: Enemy Within announced for November 12! photo
XCOM: Enemy Within announced for November 12!
by Jim Sterling

2K Games has lifted the lid on XCOM: Enemy Within, an expansion to the wildly popular Enemy Unknown. It'll be available on November 12, and aims to bring a whole host of fresh content to the original game.

New soldier abilities allow you to research Gene Mods to augment your fighters' physical capabilities, and the Mechanized Exoskeletal Cybersuit. MECs can use flamethrowers or grenade launchers, because it is cool when mechs use those things. New weapons and equipment will also bolster your assets.

New enemies will also rear their ugly heads, with the Mechtoid the first to be unveiled. An alien resource known as MELD, fresh tactical challenges and a whole 47 new maps are also on the cards. You'll also get more multiplayer environments, units, and powers, as well as stuff yet to be announced.

It would appear that Enemy Within plans to do the term "expansion" justice! We'll have some hands-on impressions coming soon, and will also be checking the game out at PAX Prime. Yay substantial expansions!

Review: Civilization V: Brave New World photo
Review: Civilization V: Brave New World
by Joshua Derocher

When Civilization V launched a few years back, a lot of die-hard fans were disappointed with the lack of depth the game had to offer. The graphics were sharp, the interface was clean and intuitive, and the overall gameplay was very nice -- but it was missing some key mechanics introduced with expansions to Civilization IV. Brave New World, the latest expansion for Civ V, brings in a massive amount of depth to the game with simple mechanics used in brilliant ways.

The major revamp here is to the game's core culture system, with the culture victory being redone to incorporate new tourism points. Along with culture getting some love, there are also new archaeology sites, trade routes, an ideology system, and world congress that really change-up the end game.

Each of these new systems is simple to grasp, but they work with one another and existing mechanics in a way that really opens up fresh ways to play, making this the best version of Civilization.

Review: XCOM: Enemy Unknown (iOS) photo
Review: XCOM: Enemy Unknown (iOS)
by Chris Carter

I was pretty blown away by Firaxis Games' re-imagining of the X-COM universe last year in XCOM: Enemy Unknown. So blown away in fact that it was my second choice for Game of the Year -- and this is coming from a fan of the '90s series.

I loved the emotional thrill of deciding the fate of the world, and living with the sorrow of war, defeat, and death -- it comes naturally in Enemy Unknown, and is all the better for it. Pretty much all of that translates into iOS, surprisingly.

Civ V trailer will be the best minute of your day

A new trailer has arrived for the Civilization V expansion, Civilization V: Brave New World. There's quite a bit of meat on Brave New World's bones, with plenty of later-game additions, and an emphasis on trade routes. For a...

Preview: Civilization V: Brave New World
by Fraser Brown

With the arrival of the 20th century, I can sometimes get a bit bored in Civilization V. It continues to engage me enough so that I power through to achieve whatever victory path I had chosen, but therein lies the issue. I end up feeling restricted, locked into a particular objective like global conquest or scientific superiority.

Brave New World is set to change all of that, adding a much-needed coat of dynamism to the Civilization V late game. A generous helping of new features changes the modern age entirely, making victory choices more flexible and interactions between civilizations more interesting. For six hours I played through a small four-player map until I earned my hard-fought victory, and it might have been the most enjoyable six hours I've spent with the game.

Review: Haunted Hollow photo
Review: Haunted Hollow
by Chris Carter

Firaxis Games is on fire again after the launch of XCOM: Enemy Unknown. Both a critical and commercial hit as well as one of my favorite games of 2012, it seems as if they could only go up from here. So of course, Firaxis decided to strike while the iron was hot, and follow up a hit complex strategy game with yet another surefire hit -- a freemium iOS title based around monsters, mansion building, and scaring townsfolk. Wait, huh?

Despite how absurd this prospect may seem on paper, you know what? It's actually pretty decent.
