Broken Age, Below, and more: The games of HORIZON

As previously discussed, Venus Patrol and MOCAtv's "alternative E3 event" HORIZON was pretty interesting both conceptually and in how it was executed. But what about the games?! That's why we're even here, right!? A few of the larger announcements to come out of the event have already been covered here at Dtoid, but what about those smaller, beautiful indie games HORIZON promised?

Thoughts on HORIZON: An alternative E3 event

Exactly one week ago, E3 was in full-swing in the bright city of Los Angles, California, and a brand new little event was quietly gearing up to happen. That lil' happening was HORIZON. Billed as an "alternative E3 event" and ...

Killzone: Mercenary pleases me in gameplay demo video

One of my biggest concerns with Killzone: Mercenary was that we'd be made to swipe across the touch screen for every melee attack. Breaking the way one holds a PS Vita for shooter games in order to drag a finger along the ce...

Dark Souls II fan feedback provides 'a good reference'

The Dark Souls franchise has some very vocal fans. We were curious just how much feedback Dark Souls II director Yui Tanimura was taking to heart, to which we were told: "The voices of the fans are pretty strong, we hear them...

Teenage Pokemon returns this month with some new friends photo
Teenage Pokemon returns this month with some new friends
by Jonathan Holmes

[Update: Slight delay! The new season is now set to start on June 23rd, with an episode about depression and E3. That's this Sunday! Max Scoville as Spiky-eared Pikachu! Anthony Carboni as his trainer! Eric Stuart as Brock! Real talk with real Brock -- what could be better than that?]

Teenage Pokemon is set to return on June 21st with four new episodes. We're trying hard to make everything twice as good this time around. There are twice the storylines, twice the animators, and twice the voice actors.

One of those actors is not like the others. Can you tell which one?

As great as it is to hear a familiar voice, there is a lot going on in this promo beyond Poke-celebrity involvement. There is no way you'll notice everything on the first, or even second viewing. If you want to be a smart guy and cool guy, try to name all the Pokemon in the teaser. I'll be surprised if you catch 'em all.

Microsoft, please stop desecrating Killer Instinct

Dear Microsoft, Please stop making Killer Instinct look like, as our own Jonathan Holmes put it, “a mash-to-win, noob-friendly combo fest.” I've played your game -- even had a proper lesson from Double Helix to he...

Our personal game of the show picks for E3 2013
by Hamza CTZ Aziz

E3 may be over but some of us can't stop talking about all the cool things we got to see and play at this year's show. There was just so much good stuff on display, both for current-gen and next-generation consoles.

We already announced what Destructoid's official game of the show was plus all our other top picks, but we also wanted to share with you our personal picks for E3 2013. These are the games that will be on our minds everyday until they're finally released and in our hands.

Lords of the Fallen shows a lot of promise photo
Lords of the Fallen shows a lot of promise
by Brett Makedonski

Action role-playing games are usually hit-or-miss in the way that they're received. The slightest deviancy in mechanics can turn a thrilling affair into a mundane and unexciting one. For the past few years, From Software's Demon's Souls and Dark Souls have perfected this formula and championed the genre.

After seeing a hands-off demo at E3, I wouldn't be surprised if Deck13's Lords of the Fallen gives From Software a run for its money. If this happens, it's because Lords of the Fallen looks like it'll strike that exact same chord with players -- tough as nails, but doable once you slow down and figure out your approach.

Rhymedown Spectacular: Where The Hype Ends

This week on Rhymedown Spectacular, Yahtzee turns his mind toward the wonderful world of limericks, while your ol' pal Jim Sterling tells a tale of a wandering cheese peddler.  As always, deep philosophical meaning and steamy commentary is hidden behind layers of beauty and elegance. You love every filthy second of it.

Why Dark Souls doesn't have music outside of boss fights

As Destructoid's Music Editor, it's hard to explain why I'm so in love with the soundtracks for both Demon's Souls and Dark Souls. The games features no music outside of boss battles, each of which get their own musical accom...

Hero worship gone wrong in Hotline Miami 2 photo
Hero worship gone wrong in Hotline Miami 2
by Hamza CTZ Aziz

Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number picks up after the events of the original game and focuses on two different groups of people you'll be playing as. While both groups are very different from one another, they both happen to be dealing with the same subject matter: Hero worship. The "hero" in this case being Jacket from the Hotline Miami, who has made waves after going on his killing spree against the Russian mob.

A new story, but that original brutal satisfying gameplay is very much intact. You'll be smashing, slashing, shooting, and slamming people's bodies into bloody pulps all to the cool tunes of the '80s-inspired music once again, and that's a good thing.

Here's The DTOID Show E3 Wrap-up!
by Max Scoville

Hey everybody! We're back from E3, and boy are our arms tired. From playing video games, but also from making cartoonish flapping motions.

We ran down what came out of Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo's respective press conferences, as well as our personal favorites, and then listed off the Destructoid Best Of E3 winners. Now, we take naps.

I met Keiji Inafune! We discussed Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z! photo
I met Keiji Inafune! We discussed Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z!
by Tony Ponce

Guys. I met Keiji Inafune at E3. I interviewed Keiji Inafune at E3.

I've achieved everything I've wanted to accomplish in my relatively short career as a games journalist. There is literally nothing else for me to do except pack my things and move on. I'm kidding, of course, but I'm not joking about how big a dream come true this was.

My meeting with Inafune was a complete surprise. Each of the Destructoid writers had been handed a list of appointments, and I saw Tecmo Koei on my schedule. I rightly assumed it was to discuss Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z, but I had no idea whether I'd be speaking directly with someone from the dev team or not.

If I had known Keiji Inafune, the man whose work has had such a profound impact on hobby and my life, would be standing behind that door, I would have come prepared with a better list of questions. Nonetheless, I stepped in the room, put on my most professional face, and did my absolute best not to squeal like a schoolgirl.

Escape Goat 2 goes Metroidvania with new map system

While the unique puzzles and platforming featured in the original Escape Goat made me a fan, the new map system being introduced in Escape Goat 2 immediately had me thinking of the 2D handheld Castlevania games. Rooms are now...

Destructoid's Best of E3 2013 winners! photo
Destructoid's Best of E3 2013 winners!
by Hamza CTZ Aziz

Titanfall already took home our Game of the Show award for E3 2013. So what about the rest of the categories and games? Well after some much needed rest and relaxation we've decided the rest of the winners for all our categories ranging from best platform exclusives, to gaming genres, and more.

There were so many great games at E3, to the point that this was one of the best E3 showings in recent years. Next-gen will have plenty of hot games, but there are still a ton of desirable titles for the current generation of consoles too.

Congrats to all the winners and nominees!
