EVE Online increased incentive to attack Dust 514 players

EVE Online has been tweaked a bit to change-up how players interact with Dust 514 players. Dust 514 players used to earn orbital strikes be earning points during their match, but now they have to rely on EVE pilots to decide ...

CCP 'confident' about Dust 514's five-year future

Late last year, erstwhile EVE Online executive producer Jon Lander proclaimed -- perhaps emboldened by his own game's impending ten-year anniversary -- that CCP had "a five-year roadmap" for the recently-released free-to-play...

Review: Dust 514

Dust 514 is one of the most ambitious games of all time. Not content with just offering a shooter within the EVE Online universe, CCP Games seeks to actually connect the game to EVE itself, allowing both titles to influence each other in a huge way. It's a major undertaking, and something that was immediately noticed from the very start of the project -- if successful, it could very well change the way we look at gaming.

There's only one problem: it needs a ton of work before it gets there.

Dust 514 now in open beta on the PlayStation 3 photo
Dust 514 now in open beta on the PlayStation 3
by Hamza CTZ Aziz

CCP's ambitious first-person shooter Dust 514 is now in open beta. The free-to-play shooter, as you may already know, is linked to EVE Online, the crazy space game that's an actual viable export of Iceland. I'm not joking.

The game will officially launch later this year, but until then CCP plans on improving Dust 514 on a regular basis. The big hook to the game is that players in EVE can rain down space lasers on targets you designate on the ground while playing Dust 514. There's a whole economy system in place, so EVE and Dust players will benefit from working together.

In the match I played at a recent preview event, I saw a number of EVE attacks hit my enemies, and my own team too. I like the overall idea to the concept, but based on the latest hands-on I don't see myself getting too invested.

My main gripe is with the player cap. Right now they're at 32, and eventually they want to get to 48-players per map. Hopefully that happens sooner than later as the maps are so big that it gets a little boring trying to find people to kill. There's still a lot of work that needs to be done before this one grabs my attention.

Contest: We're giving away 1,000 DUST 514 beta keys!
by Mr Andy Dixon

[Update: The keys are all gone! Enjoy]

The fine folks at CCP have hooked us up with 1,000 beta keys for DUST 514! The upcoming free-to-play PS3 shooter directly ties into the PC MMORPG EVE Online, with actions in one game directly affecting those in the other. That's cross-platform, cross-game integration, people!

To snag yourself a pass to the beta, just head on over to our Beta Giveaways page and press the button! Note that the keys only work on North American PlayStation 3s, so plan accordingly.

Have fun!

gamescom: Dust 514 is looking a lot better photo
gamescom: Dust 514 is looking a lot better
by Hamza CTZ Aziz

Dust 514 made its gameplay debut at the EVE Online Fanfest event earlier this year where I got some extensive hands-on time with the game. Back then, I thought the overall concept was great, but the visuals and controls needed a lot of work. I'm happy to say Dust 514 has come a long way since I last saw it six months ago.

In terms of visuals, everything looks significantly better. What I saw back at Fanfest made the game look like a last-generation game, graphically. Now it looks like it belongs with the heaping amount of other first-person shooter titles on the market.

Controls have been tuned up, too. They were really my main concern, and it's great to see the team at CCP make some serious fixes here. The gun handling overall feel a lot more tight, but there is still some looseness going on with the firing mechanics. Specifically, the sniper rifle was completely useless -- there was simply way too much sway applied to the design.

It's great to see CCP on the right track as I'm really interested in seeing what effect having a free-to-play game on the PlayStation 3, and having a direct connection to EVE Online on the PC will do for the future of this industry. I wasn't all that convinced that this would make a good first-person shooter originally, but the gamescom demo has definitely changed my mind.

An Eden for the rest of us: CCP shines light on Dust 514
