PSA: Xbox Live Gold members, go get yo' free games!

As you flip the calendar from July's impossibly cute picture of a puppy to August's impossibly cute picture of a puppy, you should be reminded that there's a new stable of free games to download on Xbox One and Xbox 360 for Xbox Live Gold members. Maybe you should just start writing "Games with Gold" on the calendar for the first of every month so you don't have to rely on the Internet people.

The offerings right now are Crimson Dragon and Strike Suit Zero on Xbox One, and Motocross Madness on Xbox 360. The Xbox One titles are both available through the end of the month, but Motocross Madness is only free through August 15. That's when Dishonored -- the real highlight of August -- takes over until September rolls around.

August Games with Gold: Dishonored, Crimson Dragon, more photo
August Games with Gold: Dishonored, Crimson Dragon, more
by Jordan Devore

Microsoft has come out with its August lineup of free games for Xbox Live Gold members and the highlight here is unquestionably Arkane Studios' stealth title Dishonored. You'll want to clear hard drive space for it in a couple weeks. But, that's not the only one worth trying.

The first Games with Gold selections -- Crimson Dragon and Strike Suit Zero on Xbox One, and Motorcross Madness on Xbox 360 -- will be free beginning this Friday, August 1. Then, it's Dishonored's turn from August 16 - 31. We'll have a reminder post when the time comes.

One of the recurring complaints for Games with Gold has been its insistence on featuring stuff that many of us own and have owned for years. With Crimson Dragon and Strike Suit Zero next month, at least we're getting something I imagine not a ton of folks have played yet.

Dishonored is $4.99 in the yearly QuakeCon Steam sale

The horribly cynical part of me is wondering what's going to actually happen at this year's QuakeCon; now that John Carmack is gone from the company and Doom 4 still just exists as a trailer, is there much to look forward to?...

New releases: Beyond, Pokemon X/Y, Disgaea
by Hamza CTZ Aziz

It's here! It's finally here! Pokemon X and Y is out this week for the 3DS and it's pretty much going to be the only thing anyone talks about leading up to the next-gen consoles. Oh, Beyond: Two Souls is also out this week. It has emotions and stuff. You like emotions, right?

Other biggies this week are two repacked re-releases: Borderlands 2 and Dishonored Game of the Year Editions. Oh, videogame industry. No wonder gamers love Steam sales so much.

Review: Dishonored: The Brigmore Witches photo
Review: Dishonored: The Brigmore Witches
by Fraser Brown

I'm meant to be playing a cold, calculating murderer -- a man who assassinated an empress and gave her innocent daughter to traitors. So why am I hiding atop a broken chandelier, a mess of tightly wound nerves and sweat? Because I pissed off a witch, that's why. A whole coven of witches, actually. And they are hunting me down, not like nervous gang members searching for a ghost, but like predatory animals.

The Brigmore Witches, Dishonored's second expansion, might begin mere hours after The Knife of Dunwall ends, but it's a different beast. The horror that existed on the peripheries of the previous outings is now center stage, and with it comes greater challenges while peeling back the layers of Dunwall and the surrounding isles, revealing its darkest elements. This is Dishonored at its very best.
