Nintendo DLC: Faxanadu, a fire place, and more

I can't be the only one who thinks of the 1980's musical film, Xanadu, when someone mentions Faxanadu. Right? Anyone? Guys? Well, it's out on Virtual Console this week. Faxanadu, not Xanadu. Although I'd totally buy that. If ...

Review: ATV Wild Ride photo
Review: ATV Wild Ride

With ATV Wild Ride, Renegade Kid veers wildly from territory its best known for, be it the nightmarish halls of a mental hospital in Dementium, or the sci-fi action of Moon. But the developer feels right at home with its latest, delivering one of the best racer offerings on Nintendo’s handheld to date.

Review: Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective photo
Review: Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective
by Nick Chester

Murder mysterious are a dime a dozen, but it’s not every day the gumshoe is investigating his own death from beyond the grave. Then again, Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective -- the latest game by Ace Attorney creator Shu Takumi -- isn’t your every day game.

For a game about death, Ghost Trick is full of life, with a unique cast of characters, genuinely sharp writing, and fresh gameplay. It’s a great way for Capcom to kick off the New Year, and an instant classic that’s bound to be a cult favorite.

Pokemon Black and White coming March 6, 2011 photo
Pokemon Black and White coming March 6, 2011
by Nick Chester

Nintendo has announced that its never-ending Pokemon saga will continue on March 6, when Pokémon Black Version and Pokémon White Version for the Nintendo DS hit shelves.

The press release announcing this momentous occasion probably reads similarly to whatever Nintendo was saying in 1999 when it shipped Pokémon Gold and Silver: the games "feature new Pokemon that players can catch, train and battle as they progress through the game, and some Pokémon can only be caught in on version of the game."

Yup, sounds like a Pokémon game. White version will get the legendary Zekrom, while Black will receive Reshiram. The two versions will also have different  areas "for the first time in the series" and changing seasons (which will be home to different Pokémon), which took Nintendo 15 years to implement.

As you can tell, not a huge Pokémon guy, but let me be fair: these are solid, fun games, and Nintendo surely has another blockbuster on its hands. Get excited... the next Pokémon set of games will probably be in 3D!

Preview: ATV Wild Ride photo
Preview: ATV Wild Ride

In 2007, developer Renegade Kid screwed with our heads and terrified us on the go with its first-person shooter, Dementium: The Ward for the Nintendo DS. Its next handheld title, Moon, stuck to the first-person formula with the action/shooter, Moon. Earlier this year, it tapped into our nightmares again with its terrifying M-rated sequel to Dementium.

So it’s a bit surprising to learn that Renegade Kid’s next game appears to veer wildly from what seemed to be a plotted course -- it’s a high speed, 3D racer for Nintendo’s handheld called ATV Wild Ride. We got an exclusive hands-on with the title, and a few hours in, there isn’t a single gun or horrifying monster in sight.

What it does have in common with Renegade Kid’s earlier titles is that it’s technically marvelous, top notch among its handheld peers, and a hell of a lot of fun.
