Merry chipWINter! Have 14 holiday-themed chiptunes! photo
Merry chipWINter! Have 14 holiday-themed chiptunes!
by Tony Ponce

[Update: The chipWINter Bandcamp page is up! There was an opportunity to purchase a limited edition audio cassette of the album, but it sold out in five minutes. Damn!]

It's the holiday seasoooooooooon!

Brandon Hood of "Chiptunes = WIN" organized the original 51-track behemoth for release back in June. In October, he followed up with an expansion featuring a reduced count of 22 tracks. For the hat trick, there is a modest collection of 14 songs from 14 artists. A far cry from the disgusting excess of the first album, sure, but no less appreciated by the discerning chiptune lover.

As the name implies, chipWINter is holiday-themed delight with which to warm yourself on those cold December nights. I especially love that the lead track is a chip arrangement of Vince Guaraldi's famous "Linus an Lucy" off the A Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack. Very classy!

At 9 PM EST, there was a chipWINter listening party on 8bitX Radio's "8 Bit Power Hour," after which the album went live for free on Bandcamp. Now go get it, boyo!

Sound Card 010: Top ten game music tracks for Christmas photo
Sound Card 010: Top ten game music tracks for Christmas
by Jayson Napolitano

It's the most wonderful time of the year! And I truly believe that. While Thanksgiving is easily my favorite holiday, Christmas is a close second, and I've always made an iPod playlist with tons of holiday music that I roll out the day after Thanksgiving.

Recently, I had people ask me what kind of music I put on my Christmas playlist, and I realized I had a lot of game tracks! So what better way to kick off the Christmas season than with ten of my favorite holiday themes from videogames!

As usual, we can't include everything in a short top ten list, so feel free to chime in with some of your favorites as well, and together we'll hopefully have a pretty sizable list of music to enjoy this Christmas season!

Sony: judging PS Vita before Christmas is 'preposterous'

Most sane people will tell you that the PS Vita is in a bad way right now. It just broke a million sales in Japan after 42 weeks, and its not grabbed much attention elsewhere in the world. However, according to Sony's Fe...

Meta Knight saves Christmas a month and a half later

A Christmas video in February? Don't think of it as late; instead, think of it as though Meta Knight just doesn't give a f*ck. "O Meta Knight" is the latest game-turned-musical from Random Encounters. Santa decided to shirk ...

Mega Man Christmas Carol II brings back holiday vengeance

It's a little bit late, but here's a fun thing! Last year, the Mega Man sprite warehouse Sprites Inc. celebrated the holidays with a short but sweet fangame that was very, very, very loosely based on the Charles Dickens clas...

Angry Birds: 6.5 million downloads on Christmas Day

What. In. The. Hell? Angry Birds was downloaded 6.5 million times on Christmas Day? It's like every device given at Christmas was gifted solely for use with Rovio's silly game. This massive one-day figure includes both free a...

The DTOID Show: Saints Row & Skyrim As Santa-Sims

Hey guys! Hope your holidays went well. This was The Destructoid Show's Monday episode, but I was too preoccupied with wholesome family-time/being hungover/shooting stuff with a pellet gun to post it when it first went up. I...

Brawl in the Family is back with a new Xmas musical comic

One of the niftiest things that Brawl in the Family's Matthew Taranto whips up every year is at least one longer-than-usual Christmas-themed comic set to music. This year, the strip is a parody of "It's Beginning to Look a Lo...

The Second Annual Destructoid Christmas Album photo
The Second Annual Destructoid Christmas Album
by Chad Concelmo

[Update: The whole album is now available on Bandcamp! Download the whole thing (and get a special bonus track), pick it song by song, or just press play and listen to it in-browser.]

When we put together the Destructoid Christmas Album last year, we never could have predicted how it would turn out. We created it because we thought it would be an amazingly fun thing to do -- the Destructoid editors singing Christmas songs! -- but we had no idea the thing would end up being filled with all kinds of awesome holiday spirit. I mean, there was just so much goddamn holiday spirit, I think we even brought a snowman to life after recording it.

With so much of that holiday spirit left over from last year, we thought we would do it again!

So, just in time for the holidays, we present to you The Second Annual Destructoid Christmas Album.

This one is bigger, badder, and merrier than ever before!

Click here to listen, or check it out here on Bandcamp. The track list and links for individual songs lie below. HAPPY HOLIDAYS, EVERYONE! We love you all more than words.

A very TF2 Christmas with Rudolph the Red Team Pyro

Thomas Truong whipped up this sweet little Christmas-themed video that parodies "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" with Team Fortress 2 characters. It's an old-fashioned, feel-good musical number to get you into the holiday spirit. Only three days left, guys and gals! Rudolph the Red Team Pyro [Truongasm]

Santa Rockstar HD: Pay what you want for a metal Xmas

I don't know about you folks, but Christmas music tends to send me to sleep, well that and the copious amount of festive liquor I imbibe at this time of year. Old St. Nick seems to share my lack of enthusiasm for it and he's...
