The nine worst girlfriends in videogames

If you’re anything like me, Valentine’s Day is a very special time of year. A time to be reminded that your crippling social anxieties and complete lack of desirable personality traits mean you’re likely to ...

HOJAEFJAAM: Atlus having an amazing summer sale on PSN

Summer is here and that probably means you're spending a lot of time inside nice air-conditioned buildings trying to get away from the scorching heat. Unfortunately AC is expensive, but the kind folks at Atlus are a...

Atlus earnings: Catherine sells nearly 500,000 worldwide

Atlus has revealed some figures in its earnings report, but it's in Japanese which is all bukkake to me. Luckily Andriasang has translated some key info. Catherine sold 260,000 units in Japan and 230,000 internationally, on X...

Catherine finally reaching Australian shores

Atlus' puzzle-horror adventure Catherine has had the most diverse reactions of a videogame in recent memory. Fortunately, now Australians can decide for themselves as the game has just been announced to be released later this...

Were there plans to bring Catherine to the PC?

The VG Resource did a little spelunking recently with an Xbox 360 copy of Catherine. By digging through the code, they were able to turn up a bunch of unused images from the game in addition to a user interface template sheet...

Catherine helps Mega64 win the ladies over

The latest offering from Mega64 actually has one of the most straightforward set-ups. There are no props. No cameos. No other starring members except Rocco. It turns out that the subject matter of Catherine is weird enough on its own to produce an incredibly awkward series of encounters with Rocco playing a disturbingly forlorn nerd Love is over before it even began.

Hey, Sheep: Catherine sells 200,000 copies in one week

We heard earlier that Catherine broke all sales records for Atlus USA, but now a new tweet from the company lets us know just how well they did. As you can see, 200,000 copies of Catherine sold in the first week! That's a lot...

Catherine breaks Atlus sales records

Catherine's still new but the action title has already become Atlus' biggest launch title ever. There's no solid sales numbers yet, but it's still safe to say that  in Atlus' 20 year history, no game has moved more copie...

Catherine gets a European publisher

While Atlus said this week that there are "no plans" to localize Catherine for Europe, Deep Silver has stepped up to say otherwise. The Dead Island publisher will be bringing everybody's favorite sex-themed puzzle-horror game to the PAL region. Yay! No word on when the game will arrive yet, but it's nice to know that it's coming. I mean, if you're into that sort of thing, you sorry little pervoid.

New Destructoid Episode: Mega Catherine Infestation! photo
New Destructoid Episode: Mega Catherine Infestation!
by Max Scoville

Hey gang, another helping of cold-blood Destructoid Show street justice for you.

First, Mega Man Legends 3 is cancelled, and Jonathan Holmes needs a hug. Some hoodlums were so mad, they vandalized the Wikipedias! But hey, on the bright side (?) Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge is coming to the 3DS store thing. SEGA finally addresses the Xenomorph in the room and announces Aliens: Infestation for the DS, along with screenshots! Some guy at EA said something about percentages and consoles or microtransformers or something. Conrad was nice enough to send us a video review for Catherine, and since he didn't show us his mustache, you should probably click over to his full review for a peek. Final Fantasy Tactics: War of The Lions is strategy-ing its way to PSN and iOS. Goldeneye 007: Reloaded is happening for the 360/PS3, so we can have our bros over for some four-player split-screen shooting time. (Obviously bros don't play Wii.) Still no word on Judi Dench or big-head mode. Finally, Tara, Jim, Holmes and I do a weekly podcast called Podtoid. This week, we condone the use of opium. I think.

Finally, this Friday's episode of The Destructoid Show will be coming to you LIVE from our YouTube channel. This is at 4 PM PST/7 PM EST, and 11 PM GMT. (I think. I only know stubborn American time-telling.) We are going to be giving away FREE PSN codes for Limbo, so tune in.

Review: Catherine photo
Review: Catherine
by Conrad Zimmerman

Meet Vincent Brooks. He's probably a lot like you. At 32 years of age, Vincent is unambitious and in a long-term relationship with the dependable but frustrated Katherine who has been dropping not-so-subtle hints about marriage. Most of his friends would tell you that he's a decent guy. But when the young, eager Catherine walks into the Stray Sheep Pub one night, it throws his entire comfortable existence into a tailspin of seduction, doubt and fear.

We've been eager to get our hands on Catherine since her bouncy form first appeared. The titillating marketing campaign showed off skin to try and get people in the door and you would be forgiven for expecting that from the final product. Those expecting a lot of "M-Rated content" are in for a huge letdown. Everyone else will discover what is possibly the most mature story found in a videogame to date.

Catherine: The Final Preview (Yes, it's easier!)
by Dale North

I beat the final, North American retail version of Catherine yesterday. I know I've previewed the Japanese release, and then later previewed code from E3 earlier this year, but this is the final preview coming from me ahead of our official review next week. If you want deeper details on the game, go check out those earlier previews or wait on that review. Otherwise, here's my wrap-up thoughts on this highly anticipated, not-an-RPG Atlus game.

And yes, it's easier!

Jimpressions: Catherine demo photo
Jimpressions: Catherine demo
by Jim Sterling

Alarm bells for Catherine were set when nothing more than screenshots and promises were released, yet I ignored them because it looked so delightfully weird. When the gameplay was shown, I finally sensed concern, and suggested that it might be "Q*Bert with tits."

After playing the demo today, I can confirm that it's not quite that ... but it's definitely the complete opposite of anything I would call fun.
