Symphony of the Night assistant director and subsequent series producer Koji Igarashi just left Konami to become an independent developer. When Igarashi and the rest of his team began working on Symphony of the Night, they had a similar mentality. "[W]e figured we could do whatever we wanted so long as we treated it as a separate series."

"With action games, especially if it's a franchise, the more you cater to requests and the feedback of the experienced players, the difficulty is set higher," Igarashi explained. "As a result, even if they're players that enjoy action games, it gets increasingly challenging to attract new users."

The team wanted to improve on the controls, which meant eliminating medium staple cheap fall deaths. "I thought it was okay to penalize the player when they fell," he explained, but, "We hated, hate, hated falling to your death." They wanted to focus to be on bosses, enemies, and action rather than staged pitfalls.

A few years ago, Keiji Inafune left Capcom to pursue independent game development. Following in those footsteps, Koji Igarashi worked his last day at Konami this past Saturday, March 15. Igarashi has been synonymous with the Castlevania franchise since his work on Symphony of the Night. He intends to open his own development studio, hoping to make games his fans will enjoy.

In an interview with IGN, Igarashi said, "I've decided to break out on my own to have the freedom to make the kind of games I really want to make -- the same kind I think fans of my past games want as well. Leaving Konami was a big decision, and not one I took lightly – I’ve spent my entire career there, made many friends, and had a lot of great opportunities – but I hope all the gamers and fans who have supported me in the past will join me in being excited about what comes next. Wish me luck!”

Before leaving Konami, he had been an employee for almost 25 years, and has been credited in more than a dozen Castlevania titles. I'm hoping we finally get an HD 2D Castlevania-like from his new studio. It is what the fans want, after all.

Lords of Shadow may not have been the Castlevania game everyone wanted, but I mostly enjoyed it for what it was, and that ending was to die for. It was the perfect segue into Lords of Shadow 2, which has been teased for nearly four years now as the return of Dracula -- the main man himself -- and a culmination of the Lords storyline.

Whether that wait was worth it or not hinges almost entirely on how much you enjoyed the first Shadow outing -- if it had a few extra problems added on top of it.
