Review: Bulletstorm photo
Review: Bulletstorm
by Nick Chester

You can’t really play Bulletstorm wrong per se, but it’s a game in which "the point" is fairly easy to miss.

Sure, you can run through its eight-hour campaign, relying on your default military assault rifle to blast through inexhaustible crowds of the game’s punk mutants and bloodthirsty soldiers. As your typical first-person shooting gallery, Bulletstorm holds its own, with a wealth of scripted “oh, shit!” moments and solid base mechanics that just feel right. So if you want to dash from firefight to firefight, mindlessly unloading clips at anything that moves, go for it. You’ll probably have a blast.

But playing Bulletstorm like a standard first-person shooter would be a disservice to yourself, and the fastest way to miss the point. If every kill doesn’t feel like an entirely new, heart-pounding experience, you’re doing it wrong. Because beneath Bulletstorm's potty-mouthed, gore-drenched exterior, People Can Fly and Epic Games have delivered a remarkably sophisticated and original shooter.

Hands-on: The first couple hours of Bulletstorm photo
Hands-on: The first couple hours of Bulletstorm
by Hamza CTZ Aziz

Bulletstorm has been on my radar since it was revealed way back in May. People Can Fly's over-the-top shooter was promising to be an epic experience, and a breath of fresh air in a market full of super-serious shooters.

The "Burnout of shooters" is coming out at the end of this month, so I was given one last look at the game before release. I like Bulletstorm, and I know I'm going to play the hell out of the Horde-like "Anarchy" mode. However, I'm not all that thrilled with the single-player campaign after my extended hands-on.

Duty Calls: A playable Bulletstorm production photo
Duty Calls: A playable Bulletstorm production
by Jordan Devore

This morning, the Internet was immensely wrapped up with Duty Calls: The Calm Before the Storm, a parody made to help promote People Can Fly's Bulletstorm.

What's so special about Duty Calls is that it's an actual game. You can download it for PC and your computer won't blow up or anything. We were waiting to report on it until one of us had tried the game out for ourselves, but apparently I wasn't the only one on staff who ran into issues.

Anyway, no hands-on insight. But, I did come with a video playthrough of Duty Calls. I'm sure many of you will find it to be funny -- possibly even hilarious, depending on how familiar you are with modern FPSs.

[Thanks, Mike]

Hey, dicktits: Beat your friends' Bulletstorm demo scores photo
Hey, dicktits: Beat your friends' Bulletstorm demo scores
by Nick Chester

Epic Games knew what it was doing when it decided to pack Gears of War 3 multiplayer beta access into retail copies of People Can Fly’s upcoming shooter, Bulletstorm -- it was trying to get your attention.

It worked in the case of 21-year-old David Walker Jr., who hadn’t become interested in the foul-mouthed, over-the-top shooter until he learned he’d be able to hop on the Gears 3 beta train. It was enough to get him downloading the demo for the game as soon as it hit Xbox Live Marketplace just one week ago.

The demo, a taste of the game’s “Echoes” mode -- which tasks players with racking up high scores by thinking of creative kills -- has been played by at least half a million people on Xbox Live alone (based on the number of leaderboard scores). The Reading, PA-based Walker Jr. is now among the demo’s top players, besting even the ranks of some of the game’s developers, who have been playing this particular slice of Bulletstorm for months.

I caught up with Walker Jr., now essentially one of the “baddest motherf**kers in motherf**k town,” to see how he could help give you the edge on the Bulletstorm demo leaderboards.
