Review: Brutal Legend photo
Review: Brutal Legend
by Nick Chester

Despite having only developed one game prior, there were a lot of expectations for Double Fine Productions' follow-up, Brütal Legend. With founder Tim Schafer behind the wheel, this heavy metal world translated to videogame has been turning (or would it be banging?) heads since its official announcement in 2007. The folks who made Psychonauts? Sign us up!

It's had a somewhat rocky history, with its publisher, Sierra, being acquired by Activision. Its new mega-publisher overlords made the decision to pass, perhaps thinking the new IP too risky, leaving Brütal Legend in the dust. Electronic Arts, on the other other hand, believed in what Double Fine had to offer, and here we are today... Brütal Legend is finally in stores.

But exactly how brütal is Double Fine's sophomore effort?

Brutal Legend is out today, we've got stuff to give away photo
Brutal Legend is out today, we've got stuff to give away
by Jim Sterling

Electronic Arts has not sent me a copy of Brütal Legend, but would still like me to help promote their game for them. Not sure how that works but Hell, I've already agreed and we've got two sweet limited edition 17" Eddie Riggs statues (which I also would like and don't have) to give away to some lucky Destructoid readers. In celebration of today's launch date, we are going to give out a pair of these things right here, right now. If you missed out on getting one of these coveted items during our Twitter party, now's your chance.

Entry is simple. All you have to do is post in this comment thread. Yep, it's yet another one of our "Give us loads of pageviews and we might give you a prize" contests! Since we're giving away some very limited edition goods here, we're not going to make it too easy, so here's the scoop, kids: We want to give one statue away for every 1,000th comment we receive. Yes, what that means if that the comment thread to this article will require 2,000 comments before we've given both statues away.

Whoever gets comment 1,000 and comment 2,000 wins. You can attempt to win as many times as you like, so feel free to F5 that bitch. We've got all day. On, and there's a review going up today as well. Check that out when it happens.

Tim Schafer talks Brutal Legend on Late Night

I don't watch Late Night at all, so far be it from me to pass judgment on the quality of the show, but if this is how Fallon runs all his interviews it has to be the most awkward show in the world. When Tim Schafer is on your...

Brutal Legend video explains multiplayer, talks rock

Raucous rock music does more than annoy parents in Brutal Legend. Harnessing the power of metal is as vital to the game’s lifeblood as an oxygen tank is to a scuba diver’s lungs. That is to say, without rock n&rsq...

Jack Black tunes up in latest Brutal Legend clip
by Nick Chester

Did you know that Jack Black is a roadie for the band Freedom Wizard? They're gonna' be huge.

Okay, so the parts about Black being a roadie and there being a band called Freedom Wizard aren't true. But here's what is -- on October 13 (that's next week), Brutal Legend hits shelves. Have you pre-ordered your copy yet? Or are you waiting for our review, which also happens to hit our Web site on October 13.

Yeah, I've actually been playing the game today and well... I can't say anything about it. But I can direct you to the above video, number nine in the series of "Brutal Thoughts with Jack Black." It's a Destructoid exclusive for at least the next 24 hours, so this is the only place you can see if right now. For the impatient types who are ready to rock right now.

It features some game footage, Jack Black's awesome guitar tuning skills, and a guy in a wizard's robe. Check it out, along with more videos on the official site. They're like, totally brutal.

Win a code to download the Brutal Legend demo! (Update)
by Nick Chester

Guess what? A demo for Double Fine's Brutal Legend is available today on Xbox LIVE Marketplace and PlayStation Network. That's the good news. But the bad news is for those who didn't pre-order the game. See, only customers who've pre-order the game through GameStop can get it now. Everyone else has to wait until September 24, 2009. Brutal.

Well, not so fast! We have a few extra codes -- two (2) for Xbox 360 and three (3) for PlayStation 3 -- and we want to give them away. How do you win? Easy. Simply respond to this post with the comment "I'm brutal! \m/" and what console you want it on, and tomorrow morning we'll randomly select the winners. Simple!

We'll accept entries through midnight, East Coast time. After that, you're just wasting your breath. Oh, and one more thing -- codes are only valid for those in the United States. We're sorry, but that's what we've got, so no point in bitching about it in the comments. Good luck!

[Update: Winners have been notified and have all received his or her codes -- you know who you are! Congratulations.]
