The DTOID Show: LEGO Minecraft, Blizzcon, & Xbox 720?!

Hey gang! We're back with our usual tri-weekly revelry, and today the news is all hot and stinky. Er. Exciting. For starters, Blizzcon is cancelled. Blizzard is gonna have a big pro-gaming tournament in Asia, but no. No nigh...

No Blizzcon in 2012, convention returns in 2013 photo
No Blizzcon in 2012, convention returns in 2013
by Jim Sterling

Blizzard has declared that there will be no Blizzcon this year, meaning that World of Warcraft fans have lost the one thing in real life they were planning to do this year. Haha, insulting nerd humor!

The convention will return in 2013.

A "jam-packed schedule" has been blamed for the lack of Blizzcon, with the studio working hard on Diablo III, Titan, a new WoW expansion and updates to StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm. The Battle.net championship will be held in Asia toward the end of the year.

Pretty huge news! Were you looking forward to Blizzon this year, or are you totally cool with this?

My amazing adventures at BlizzCon 2011

I only had a few hours to spend at BlizzCon 2011 this past weekend, and I wanted to do as much fun stuff as possible in that very limited amount of time. I had already played StarCraft II and Diablo III (and don't regularly ...

BlizzCon 2011 in five* minutes or less

Okay, so maybe it's technically more like eight or nine minutes. Either way, if you're ever wondered what fighting the crowds at BlizzCon is actually like, then look no further because we've managed to pack about 12 hours of...

BlizzCon 11 photos, part deux it again

The parade of hi-res orgasm fuel continues with the second day of BlizzCon 11 photos. I can't pretend that I'm all too familiar with Blizzard's repertoire, but I can appreciate like-minded geeks coming together to make any ol...

BlizzCon11: Diablo III headed to consoles, no public beta photo
BlizzCon11: Diablo III headed to consoles, no public beta
by Tara Long

As soon as I found out that I'd be talking to a couple of the guys from Diablo III at BlizzCon this year, I was determined to find out whether or not the highly-anticipated RPG would, in fact, ever make it to consoles, as previous rumors have suggested. Fortunately, my question answered itself when I learned I'd be interviewing Josh Mosquiera, the game's Lead Console Designer.

When asked if his title was a harbinger of things to come, Mosquiera responded, "We're not announcing anything because, literally, there's three of us on the team right now ... but that's what we're trying to do... We're trying to build the best console team at Blizzard. Blizzard is really serious about going back to the console." No general timeline was given, but it seems likely that development has either begun or will do so very soon.

I also got a chance to speak with Kevin Martens, Diablo III's Lead Content Developer, who confirmed that Blizzard will not be doing a public beta for the game prior to launch.

"We're doing it in waves, so we'll keep adding people. The beta will be going for some time; we're going to be patching it, supporting it, and adding new stuff to it, as well."

Other topics of conversation include the emphasis on "action storytelling" this time around, which class is the best class, and what the final year of development is like for a 7-year game.

BlizzCon 2011: Hands-on with the Pandaren Monk photo
BlizzCon 2011: Hands-on with the Pandaren Monk
by Chris Morris

After the announcement of the Mists of Pandaria expansion for World of Warcraft, I was able to jump right into the game and get hands-on with the class and race. Upon being dropped into the new starting area, I was instantly awed by the overwhelmingly cool visual aesthetic of an East Asian-themed kung fu panda village. Small changes made to the graphics engine have allowed Blizzard to make the game look and run even better than what we initially saw in Cataclysm. The highly-detailed landscape, sharper textures, and better lighting really help to immerse the player in the new setting.

While I don't want to spoil any of the starting-area content, I will say that the quest lines and story progression was rather fun and interesting. I found myself reading through much of the quest text, invested in what was happening beyond just the amount of XP I would receive at the end.

It starts off as a simple journey, with the player being tasked with helping various masters, picking up new techniques along the way. It soon turns into an important arc for the player, revealing more about the Pandaren and their role in the world of Azeroth.
