Blizzard releases Blackthorne for free on Battle.net photo
Blizzard releases Blackthorne for free on Battle.net
by Conrad Zimmerman

While Blizzard is primarily known as the developer of Warcraft and Starcraft titles today, I have a deep affection for the games produced in the company's early years. Today, I'm a pretty happy camper, as one of those classic titles has been released for free on Blizzard's Battle.net service, Blackthorne.

A weird mix of fantasy and science-fiction, Blackthorne is a 2D platforming game where the deposed prince of an alien planet, hidden on Earth at childhood twenty years prior, returns to his world to save it from the despotic monster who now rules. It's a bit like the original Prince of Persia with a sawed-off shotgun in gameplay.

You can try Blackthorne out yourself starting today by going to your Battle.net account and acquiring it from the client downloader.

Once, I watched a StarCraft II match on Metalopalis between two Terran opponents, and it lasted for about an hour and a half. It felt like an eternity. After a while, it wasn't even suspenseful anymore. It was more...in...

Diablo III auction house exploiters are being 'audited'

Let's take a quick jaunt through the recent timeline of this Diablo III "Gold-gate" crisis. First, patch 1.0.8 goes live, brought into the world as an innocent, doe-eyed update aimed at improving cooperative play. H...

Diablo III director says the Auction Houses 'really hurt' photo
Diablo III director says the Auction Houses 'really hurt'
by Patrick Hancock

At a GDC talk today, Jay Wilson, director behind Diablo III, mentioned that both of the Auction Houses "really hurt the games," reports Joystiq. According to Mr. Wilson, almost every single one of the players in Diablo III has used one of the two auction houses, if not both, and roughly 50% of the players still use it regularly.

"I think we would turn it off if we could," he said, but continued to explain that they have no real idea of how many of their consistent players love or hate it.

The Real Money Auction House is, in my opinion, the biggest contributor to taking Diablo III in the wrong direction. Simply turning it off wouldn't solve anything at this point, though, since the damage to the game's core design is already done.
