The 80s computer sounds of Strange Light Under My Bed photo
The 80s computer sounds of Strange Light Under My Bed
by Tony Ponce

I have been all about the chiptunes lately! Is that a problem for anyone? I didn't think so!

The Ubiktune net label has just released a new album entitled Strange Light Under My Bed. However, these aren't the kinds of chiptunes you are accustomed to. No 2A03 / VRC6 NES sounds, no FM synth, no Game Boy blips and bloops... nuh uh. This time, it's all about retro computers.

On this five-track album, musician Yerzmyey pulled magic out of the ZX Spectrum 128K, ZX Spectrum 48K, Amiga 500, Atari 520 ST, and Atari Falcon 030 audio chips. Then he layered on psychedelic recording effects for a sound reminiscent of German electronica artists such as Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra Tempel, and Klaus Schulze. I personally think the music would work as the score to an early 80s sci-fi film.

Strange Light Under My Bed another freebie release, so go and swipe it from the link below.

RollerCoaster Tycoon returns on 3DS next month

This past weekend, SimCity prompted Chad and I to discuss the disappointing lack of a new RollerCoaster Tycoon game. Then I remembered that -- oh, yeah -- we are getting one: RollerCoaster Tycoon 3D. Not exactly what we had i...

The retro and modern armies are at all-out war!

Everyone loves to debate the merits of games from "back in the day" versus those of more contemporary fare. But why should we have to fight their battles for them? All those gaming heroes are perfectly capable of settling th...

Game covers with an Atari 2600 twist

The current rage is reimagining anything and everything with an original Nintendo style twist. Sure, the pixel art remakes are nice, but EVERYONE is doing it. So it's nice to see someone approach things differently, as devian...

I had ALMOST forgotten how crappy Tiger LCD games were

Before the Game Boy, handheld gaming was dominated by LCD electronic devices, most famously the Game & Watch line. Each device was dedicated to playing a single game in the crudest way imaginable -- all possible object l...

Swordfight will get your joystick hard

I stand corrected. This is the weirdest story of the weekend! If you read Joseph Leray's "Nordic New Wave" feature from the other week, you ought to be familiar with Johann Sebastian Joust, a game using accelerometer-powered ...

Black Lodge: The faux Atari 2600 Twin Peaks game photo
Black Lodge: The faux Atari 2600 Twin Peaks game
by Jordan Devore

Seeing as how we'll never get a Twin Peaks game in the same vein as L.A. Noire, sad as that makes me, this Atari 2600 tribute will have to do. It's a free game for PC and Mac fittingly called Black Lodge.

The instruction manual and box art are representative of the era, which is a great touch. Similarly, the game itself isn't immediately forthcoming with what you (Agent Cooper) are supposed to do. The end result isn't particularly fun to play, but entertaining? Sure. And strangely creepy.

I swear, every other week another one of our readers gets into Twin Peaks for the first time. Figured there are enough of you now to make this worth a mention.
