I hate the rumored next Xbox Achievement system photo
I hate the rumored next Xbox Achievement system
by Brett Makedonski

If I had to choose a single aspect of this generation of consoles that personally defined the past seven years, I'd immediately turn to the Xbox 360's Achievement system. For better and for worse, Achievements have completely dominated my psyche and have fully affected the way that I play games. I feel guilty at times that I can't just enjoy a game until I'm done enjoying it. Instead, I will grind away at the most arduous of tasks, as long as there's an Achievement to be unlocked. On several occasions, the habit has tainted an otherwise positive experience.

It's not my fault that I'm like this. I'm just wired this way. When it comes to videogames, if there are objectives to be completed, I need to complete them. Microsoft catered perfectly to this with the implementation of Achievements upon the Xbox 360's launch in 2005. Rather than set my own constraints as to what construes completion, Achievements feel like a list of endeavors handed down from the developers themselves. It's as if they're saying "this is what you need to do to properly play my game." It's what drove me to attain 100% in Super Meat Boy.

World of Warcraft players really love those achievements

I like to pretend that I'm above achievements and trophies, but that's a bare-faced lie. One minute I might be questioning the point or merit of these virtual marks of honor, but the next I'll be trying to earn them.  At...

Trends of this Generation: Digital distribution photo
Trends of this Generation: Digital distribution
by Daniel Starkey

Leading up the possible PlayStation 4 announcement on February 20, I've been looking into some paradigm shifts we've seen over the past generation. This is stuff that will likely be with us for a while; these are things that I think will continue on for at least a decade to come.

So far, we've already taken looks at motion controls and consoles becoming more like all-in-one media centers, eSports, Gamification, and today I'll be finishing this series by looking at what might be the most important development since the console -- digital distribution.

Earn Xbox Achievements on iOS with free game Wordament photo
Earn Xbox Achievements on iOS with free game Wordament
by Jordan Devore

If you haven't yet played enough word-forming games to last you a lifetime, consider checking out Wordament. Previously available for Windows Phone and Windows 8, this title has now made it to the Apple App Store complete with ten Achievements worth a total 50 Gamerscore points.

Xbox Achievements on iPhone? I never thought I'd see the day! Better yet, Wordament is a free download and, truth be told, actually pretty fun. I liked the added sense of competition in the way that you're matching words in real time alongside everyone else who is playing.

Gearbox details late fan's inclusion in Borderlands 2 photo
Gearbox details late fan's inclusion in Borderlands 2
by Tony Ponce

Last year's most heartwarming game-related story was without a doubt that of Michael John Mamaril, the 22-year-old Borderands fan who lost his life to cancer. His friend Carlo sent an email to Gearbox Software explaining the situation with Michael, and not only did Gearbox produce a special eulogy read by Claptrap himself, the company also announced plans to incorporate Michael into Borderlands 2 as an NPC.

Yesterday, Gearbox held Community Day 2012 in Dallas, where fans could meet with the devs and just have a grand ol' time. During a panel with the Borderlands 2 team, an audience member asked why the company likes to go out of its way to reach out to fans, specifically mentioning the Claptrap marriage proposal video and the Michael Mamaril eulogy (check it out here, starting at the 2:46:40 mark). Details of Michael's incorporation followed.

Michael's NPC will be hanging around somewhere in Sanctuary, and every time you meet him, he will give you loot of rarity level blue or higher. Essentially, he's the guy you can count on when the game starts to wear you down. Not only that, meeting him will also give you the "Tribute to a Vault Hunter" Achievement, immortalizing the man both in the game and on the Xbox Leaderboard. That's pretty heavy.

I can't even properly put into words how incredible this whole thing is. It's just, I mean, wow. Thank you Gearbox, for keeping the memory of a true fan alive for a long time to come.

Life's goal achieved! I am now an in-game achievement!
