Review: Scribblenauts Unmasked: A DC Comics Adventure

When they announced that the next Scribblenauts game would include characters and settings from the DC Comics Universe, I was excited. That's a lot of history to pull from, and with Scribblenauts' reputation of including tons...

Getting drawn into Scribblenauts Unmasked photo
Getting drawn into Scribblenauts Unmasked
by Dale North

I took a break from the crowded show floor of San Diego Comic-Con to relax for a bit with the latest build of 5th Cell's upcoming game, Scribblenauts Unmasked: A DC Comics Adventure. Scribblenauts has always been one of those games that's easy to pick up but hard to break away from, but the new superhero twist in this latest game gives us even more to get lost in.

The next Scribblenauts is set in the DC Comics universe photo
The next Scribblenauts is set in the DC Comics universe
by Hamza CTZ Aziz

Maxwell and Lily's next Scribblenauts adventure sees the pair venturing into the DC Comics universe through the power of their magic notebook. The siblings love comics, and the whole reason they even want to enter DC's universe is to see who's better between Batman and Superman. The Scribblenauts heroes quickly learn that there's a far greater issue at hand and they'll need to help all the DC's heroes out in this new adventure.

While this is all very heavily focused on the DC universe, the same Scribblenauts mechanics and gameplay systems are in place. DC Comics fans are especially going to like this one as it's not just The New 52 characters featured in Unmasked. This is a giant sandbox featuring over 2,000 DC characters, vehicles, locations, and more that ranges back to even obscure stuff from 1976.

Top ten best THQ games: Remembering a giant photo
Top ten best THQ games: Remembering a giant
by Allistair Pinsof

When assessing a publisher's impact on the industry, we tend to focus on the highs rather than consistency. THQ was anything but consistent, putting out Nintendo DS shovelware, rushed licensed games, and taking part in one of the absolute worst games of all time with Mohawk & Headphone Jack. And yet, THQ occupies a warm place in our hearts. Those three letters represent some of the best times we had with games of the past decade, bringing unknown studios like Volition and Relic into the limelight.

Once we scraped off all the Bratz games and pet sims, we had a hard time determining THQ's top ten best.

Review: Scribblenauts Unlimited photo
Review: Scribblenauts Unlimited
by Jim Sterling

The problem with a game like Scribblenauts is that the promise of boundless freedom comes with strict boundaries. A game that promises you can conjure any item in existence to solve puzzles can be broken pretty simply in a world without rules, since electronic ninjas could theoretically solve any and all problems. Thus, rules are contrived, fences erected, and you find yourself not quite free as the bird you just created out of thin air.

Not to mention, a game that tries to do so much has to cut corners somewhere to fit it all in. So it is that you end up with no distinction between a dragon and a wyvern, as items share models and traits, and ultimately you find that the limitless potential just got a hell of lot more limited in the journey from premise to practice.

Scribblenauts Unlimited even promises infinite freedom in its name. As you might have already guessed, that promise is not fulfilled ... and perhaps even falls shorter than previous games in the series.

Mega64: Selling ONE PERSON on Scribblenauts Unlimited

Judging from the opening, it looked like Shawn somehow already owned Scribblenauts Unlimited on 3DS, so 5th Cell co-founder and Scribblenauts creator Jeremiah Slaczka was just wasting his time. Either way, it's always fun to...

by Dale North

Want a free download of 5TH Cell's Scribblenauts REMIX for your iOS device? Head to Starbucks and pick up one of the free promo cards there to download this week's Pick of the Week. Scribblenauts REMIX is normally $5, so maybe you could that that money into one of the bomb-ass Pumpkin Spice Latte drinks. And you might as well go Venti (470 calories) on that sh*t.

Above and in our gallery you'll see the 5TH Cell team at Starbucks with Rooster Hats on to celebrate Scribblenauts REMIX being the Pick of the Week.

Review: Hybrid photo
Review: Hybrid
by Ian Bonds

Third-person shooters are a dime a dozen. From games like Gears of War to the recent Spec Ops: The Line, cover tends to play heavily into the combat, but you'd be hard pressed to find one that fully revolves around cover as not only the tactic but the main focus of gameplay. That is, until Hybrid came along.

Offering a unique spin on the third-person shooter genre with a persistent world map and online-only play, Hybrid is an unexpected surprise in the Summer of Arcade line-up.

That's not to say it's a perfect game, but it's certainly a surprising one.
