Flyin' to my heart: Seven videogame songs that actually excite me photo
Flyin' to my heart: Seven videogame songs that actually excite me
by Brittany Vincent

It's tough for me to get excited these days. I ain't jaded, I just hate it. Actually, it's not like I hate everything. I simply feel anxious nearly every waking moment of my life. I need something to look forward to, no matter the context. If I know I'm going out for dinner with someone at the end of a long day, I'll count down the seconds. If there's an event in a month or so I'm particularly jazzed for, I'll plan it down to the very last detail. Because I'm always looking forward. I'm always waiting for the next email assignment, the next game, the next writing gig, and the next life-changing event. While I'm waiting, I need an appropriate soundtrack to set the mood.

Luckily for me I can turn to some of my favorite videogames to provide a bouncy soundtrack that gets me hyped enough for my next challenge...or at the very least, thinking about how to kickstart my life so that there is another challenge to look forward to.

So what exactly is a deck-building game anyway?

A number of videogames have shown up lately with the gameplay adjective "deck-building" in their descriptions. Steve Swink took a break from developing Scale in order to release Dad's Building a Deck. Coin...

DEFINITIVE TOP 9 VIDEOGAME CATS OF ALL TIME
by Kyle MacGregor

Today is National Cat Day, apparently. Good lord, there is a National Cat Day. I'm not quite sure what to make of that. A list article maybe? The Internet seems to like those.

Yeah, let's do this. Here are Destructoid's top 10 favorite videogame cats of all time. No, wait. Top nine! Nine cats for nine lives. Now that headline really purrs.

Review in Progress: Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (Patch 2.4) photo
Review in Progress: Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (Patch 2.4)
by Chris Carter

I still can't believe Square Enix salvaged the original Final Fantasy XIV. I mean, it had the guts to make the game a core entry, so I'm glad the studio reworked it into A Realm Reborn -- this whole saga is just really interesting to me.

The newest update is Dreams of Ice, featuring a Primal/Summon many fans of the classic series know and love, Shiva. It also brings along the typical major changes and content bits, as well as one of the biggest additions so far -- a new class/job.

Halo 2 Anniversary's new cutscenes look so damn good

Blur Studio has been killing it lately. You might not know the company by name, but as someone who plays modern videogames you'll surely recognize the company's visual effects. When Halo 2 Anniversary debuts in The Master Ch...

Costume Quest 2 knocks on Xbox's door today

As it turns out, the duration of that Costume Quest 2 timed-exclusive on PlayStation wasn't all that long. Like, one day. But, that's okay because it means that everyone will have it in time for Halloween. That's s...

The Evil Within PC updated with settings for 60 FPS and letterbox removal

Based on everything I've heard about The Evil Within, I genuinely do not know if I'll like the game. It could be one of my favorites this year, but I also wouldn't be shocked if I ended up hating it, all the same. I'll contin...

Literally amazing! I let a stray cat into my friend's house and then put it in the tub with a Kinect

It's National Kitties Are F*cking Adorable and Awesome Day. The best day of the year, in my opinion. To celebrate, I let a stray cat into my friend's house and he beelined to the shower. That's how cats roll (when they feel ...

We took our anger out on the furniture in Shadow Warrior on PS4 photo
We took our anger out on the furniture in Shadow Warrior on PS4
by Bill Zoeker

Max and I decided to check out Shadow Warrior, which was recently ported from PC to consoles, is a re-imagining of the 1997 game by 3D Realms. It's sort of like Duke Nukem with the culturally ignorant Asian themes of Mortal Kombat. I had my doubts about this game, but as you can see in the video above, I think it's kind of just dumb fun. Also, we rock out to Stan Bush and make dumb jokes.

Gamer's Rhapsody will gather music and games on November 15-16

I have previously expressed that we, the Destructoid community, need to find a new meetup to replace PAX, since PAX is too big to handle now. Maybe Gamer's Rhapsody can be a contender. Probably not for this year, but maybe in...

Dark water and the things below give me the shivers photo
Dark water and the things below give me the shivers
by Nic Rowen

If we're all confessing our gaming-related fears, I might as well share mine. I can't stand the water. More specifically, I can't stand what lives under the water. If there is ever a section of a game that will make me want to stop playing, it probably involves getting your toes wet and taking a little swim with, well, whatever. I can thank Super Mario Bros. 3 for this phobia.

Concrete Jungle combines city planning and deck building

Whoa! Final Fantasy Type-0 HD is pretty fun photo
Whoa! Final Fantasy Type-0 HD is pretty fun
by Steven Hansen

Look, you can't blame me for turning a blind eye to Final Fantasy Type-0. Why hurt and labor and want over something you can't have? At least not a videogame, of which there are alternates and substitutes plenty.

Elliot Gay knew what was up. He played it on PSP. He sought out the unlikely HD remake, which we are somehow getting in the United States of America next spring, and played it at TGS.

What Square brought to Paris Games Week was a similar demo. Three playable characters partied up, a large area to run through. I'm just here to tell you what Elliot already knew. This game is pretty cool. Maybe Final Fantasy XV could be good.
