This really shows the ignorance of consumers. With the 3DS literally right around the corner, they're still buying DS systems. Out of those 900k that get those DS systems for xmas, how many are going to want to upgrade it to 3DS when it comes out?
I predict Ebay is going to be MASSIVELY Flooded with "like-new" DS systems come Feb and March.....Time to sell yours now if you were planning on doing it, they'll be a dime a dozen around the 3DS launch....especially seeing that the 3DS will support DS games.

The number of DSi and DSi XLs moved this weekened was pretty crasy. Part of me wanted to say 3DS comes out in four months, but I just shut up and helped people get DSes and games they wanted for it.
The DS section of my store was utterly ravaged. The only other section that came close was the 360 stuff.

The Wii IS having a downturn in sales, but that doesn't mean its not doing fine. Those two things are not mutually exclusive, especially given the Wii's numbers from two years ago. Nintendo is also doing a good job at pushing the lame-duck DS off onto an unsuspecting public.
All the stores had the sweet Orange and Green DSI bundles which were selling like hotcakes, but we were selling more 360 hardware than anything else.
Seems rather odd that they're still selling, but hey whatever it's the Holiday season, so go out and buy some technology that will be obsolete in a couple of years, give or take.
Nintendo- rolling in money. Carrying it's money in suitcases made of money. Driving to the bank in a Rolls-Royce made of cash.

Please explain to me how the "average consumer" in your view would know about the 3DS. They don't spend much time on the internet, and the time they do is shopping at sites like Amazon and reading the news at CNN.com. And while the "mass media" did mention the 3DS in passing, the details (like price, launch date, BC) were usually relatively thin (at the time; the follow-ups buried in the tech sections were better), with most headlines being "new 3D system without glasses!" These are people who walk into Toys R Us and Target and buy what their kids ask from them, usually what their kids' friends have. The world at large does not live on Kotaku and Destructoid. Take that as you will.

@jedcred has a good point. I was at best buy on friday to pick up RB Beatles and Tekken 6 and was talking to parents about the 3DS. They had no clue about it and thanked me for the advice of waiting for the 3DS. The BB manager didn't like me too much though. /shrug

Oh don't worry, they pop their heads back out after the holiday season is over. They do every year, so I don't see why this one would be any different. They claim that the Wii is dead every year, for the past few years now, until the holiday season when its sells through the roof. I guess they just ignore that part. My question is, where are the guys claiming that "its the year of the PS3" again for the 4th, or 5th year in a row? LOL!

The only thing that has ever pissed me off about Nintendo was their constant "upgrading" of handhelds (namely, with the original DS which was hideous and then I think 9 months later I was buying the much sexier DS Lite, still my mainstay portable). Otherwise, we can all agree that Nintendo is the LEAST evil console producer in the gaming industry at large. Yes, they have a shovelware problem across both platforms (wii/ds). This is in large part due to the lower initial cost barrier to production coming from having simplified programming architecture and less complex systems. And yes, Nintendo should shut those fools down who produce the shovelware because it "Floods shelf real estate" and competes unfairly because the average "ignorant" consumer knows little to nothing of the difference between The World Ends With You and Barbies Ultimate Play Day or whatever. But in the end, software sales means money for Nintendo. Shovelware only pisses off passionate avid "gamers" that classify themselves as such because it makes their system look less prestigious. It also can piss off third-party entities that feel their product is being drowned in shovel-ware, but we never heard this complaint with the PS2 even though that console was literally drowned in titles. Endless games to play on that system. Seriously. But I can only express happiness for Nintendo, that this company that many had written off (and continue to write off) continues to surprise, innovate, and succeed, all of it while following reasonable business ethics and rarely engaging in slander. I just love the guys. I play PC/360 way more than my Wii obviously, but I will always love em. God bless Nintendo.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii still brings some cash. I've seen it selling for $30+ on eBay (+ shipping fees). I bought it ages ago for $19.99 on Amazon Warehouse.
This is awesome! I was at Wal-Mart on Black Friday, buying a new HDTV, and I saw that there was more people buying the new DS's over the 360 bundle. To be fair, the 360 bundle wasn't all that great and the 360 wasn't a new version or anything (this bundle wasn't the Kinect bundle, mind you), so it kind of makes sense.
Eh, I just bought the mario dsi xl this weekend, knowing of the 3ds. Why you might ask? It is my first ds and I prob wont buy a 3ds for years to come.
this can't be very surprising to anyone with a level head. nintendo has followed the same pattern for over a decade now. first, release console for a net profit. second, continue to sell console at profit until competition forces you to decrease price. third, bring in the special console bundles/colors when support starts to wane. they've been making tons of cash by following this very simple pattern, and that's not going to stop just because the gaming elite don't think the wii is a "real" console.
I'm pretty sure those people who just got a DS are going to be pretty angry when the 3DS comes out. Unless they weren't going to pick one up near launch anyway which is likely; but I know if I bought a handheld only to see the next generation of it come out right afterwards I'd be irritated.
I highly doubt anyone who waited this long to get a DS would get the 3DS anywhere close to launch time.

The 3DS will be at least twice as expensive, and the DS still has Pokemon 5th gen coming up. Remember, the GBA was a legitimate system alongside the DS and PSP for a while.
