9/11 influencing Beyond Good & Evil photo

Beyond Good & Evil creator Michael Ancel has been talking about the inspiration behind the game and its long-awaited sequel, and has counted the September 11 terror attacks among his chief influences.

"It was a mix of a lot of experiences," he explains. "It was a phantasm to create an adventure game, a universe too. It was the game I wanted to create for a long time. There were a lot of inspirations: the Miyazaki universe, my own inspirations, politics and the media; the theme of September 11 - the CNN show with army messages and the fear climate. And it was a mix from other universes.

"It's different from Zelda and other titles like that; very good games but they are out of time. [BG&E] was issued of the actuality."

BG&E2 will be a direct sequel to the critically acclaimed original, allegedly picking up right where the last one left off and will be "completely" inspired in the same way the first was.

It sounds like Ancel has a strong vision in mind for the sequel, and I really hope that the influences named are put to good use. I loved the original game, but I felt it wasn't quite as incisive and intellectually charged as it thought it was. I'd be very interested to see if the sequel can really have something to say for itself.

I really want this sequel, Beyond Good and Evil was fantastic.. Interesting reading how it was developed though. Now to play it again after getting it on Steam recently.

TOO SOON!

Also, I really hope that Ubisoft doesn't stick their dick in this game like they did with the new Prince of Persia. But I think that's asking for far too much.

@ThunderHeartXI Hey man screw you Prince of Persia was fucking great >:(

I almost wish they HADN'T released a trailer for this so soon. Hasn't it been over a year now since it was announced and we STILL have no info?

Really now? Influenced by a bunch of Saudis crashing planes against towers? I thought they were influenced by a bunch of 80's or 90's spy movies about a camera man unknowingly taking pictures of a murder coverup or top secret plan and being chased by the people responsible for it. For me, the game kind of reminds me of investigative journalism or a bunch of do gooders trying to find evidence to expose an organization. Remember Enemy of the State starring Will Smith? Yea, something like that.

I gotta agree with that. If there was one thing about the story that could be criticised, it was quite simplistic, especially if you're used to JRPGs and such. I'm not, because I think they're the Devil's game, so for me it was fine, but I've seen more complex examples since.

Also, @ThunderHeart:

I can't say for sure, but I think it was that one guy's idea, not so much Ubi's. Could be his interpretation of what Ubi wanted for the franchise... I wouldn't be surprised if "Make it more casual" was just a part of Ubi's remit for the game, and he had to do something with that. I dunno. I think Ancel is being given more of a free pass on this though, due to the whole history of this sequel's existence.

@Chronic Logic
He could be referring to anything - the media reaction, the public unrest and horror, the shady politics, tonnes of things. Not necessarily the actual symbolic act itself. Use your brain, person.

I've only played parts of the first one since I never had that generation of console and the game plays buggy with modern video cards for pc- but from what I played of it I really enjoyed it. I have considered for a while going and picking up an old ps2 lust to play BG&E and a few other titles since the cosole price is so far down right now

"[BG&E] was issued of the actuality."

WTF is that supposed to mean?

Very misleading Eurogamer article.

"There were a lot of inspirations: the Miyazaki universe, my own inspirations, politics and the media; the theme of September 11 - the CNN show with army messages and the fear climate. And it was a mix from other universes."

AND THEN:

"Ancel went on to reveal that Beyond Good & Evil 2 will be inspired "completely" in the same way, and pick-up almost exactly where the original left off."

The first quote was about BG&E. Being inspired "in the same way" doesn't mean he's going to use the same inspiration from the first game as inspiration for the second game.

But hey, whatever gets the traffic flowing.

The reason BG&E is such an amazing game is because of the extremely good writing, the lovable characters, and the absolutely genuinely beautiful art style. It holds a very close place in my heart and I think many people should go out and play it if they haven't. Hell, maybe Ubisoft will port it to Wii with "ehanced controls" before the sequel comes out. :p

"[BG&E] was issued of the actuality."

It means the game's story drew on present reality and current events rather than history and myth (e.g. Zelda). Hooray for context.
