See what they did with the name? SEE WHAT THEY DID THERE?!
NEStalgia takes the classic 8-bit RPG and makes it a online role-playing experience. This comes from Silk Games. Create parties and go on an adventure in a blocky world full of random encounters and jerky three-frame walking animations. There's little towns, inns, caves, dungeons, bosses and even that wooshy sound effect when you're encountered out of nowhere. Sounds like a retro overload to me.
The game is free to download and play and the servers are always up. Give it a try. Let us know what you think of it.

This is what I've wanted to see for a while. Not exactly as it is, but the concept. An 8-bit RPG allows for a great deal of development time to be spent in gameplay, and as such you could do CRAZY experimental things with this game in order to test the limits of the world. This should stop being all about the nostalgia factor and start taking risks because people will stay for the nostalgia factor anyways.
Okay double post, first time posting from IPhone. Anyway this game has been out for 2+ years now, really not new and it's made on Byond - terrrribleeeee community
I don't know why so many people say that it's been out for 2 years now. It's been in public beta for less than a year. March 27th, 2010. And while the BYOND anime community is terrible, not many of those 9-year olds would even know what an NES is. Nobody has to worry about them defecting from their newest DBZ or Naruto game with stolen source code and coming over there.
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
WHAT SAY YOU, DESTRUCTOID?
