Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

In a recent statement issued by the 7-Eleven category manager for gaming and electronics, it was confirmed that the company would continue to sell games “year-round” and would commit to offering “value-priced” videogames and DVDs. 7-Eleven will also continue to sell rancid hotdogs, Slurpees, and gasoline.

Recently, 7-Eleven made a splash with their new games line-up because of an inability to understand street dates. Games like Gears of War 2 and World of Warcraft expansion Wrath of the Lich King have, in some cases, been sold at 7-Elevens days before they have been available at retail outlets like GameStop.

Along with the new commitment to providing games, 7-Eleven confirmed some new titles that they will be carrying. Guitar Hero World Tour (bundle), Fallout 3, Quantum of Solace, WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2009, and Call of Duty: World at War will all be available at your local store fairly soon.

I’m a little lost on this concept, but is there any reason to hit up 7-Eleven for a new game unless they’re selling it early? I assume once they really start selling products on a weekly basis, publishers are going to start watching this trend and put the brakes on the hiccups. What do you guys think?

Early Releases is just about the only reason...

Unless you were going to rob them! :)

Not just one reason, but TWO!

1. Slurpees are awesome.
2. 7-11 is KING of breaking street dates!

Also, playing Fallout 3 with brain freeze makes you feel like you've contracted radiation poisoning.

Eh, this is just going to cause a wave of impulse buys. Someone goes in to buy a Slurpee walks out with game X because the back of the box looks awesome.

7-11's are EVERYWHERE - meaning you might be able to walk up the street to pick up the game instead of driving or taking public transport to a game store. How is that a bad thing?

It is called a convenience store for a reason. There are two or three 7-11s between my house and the nearest game stop. I may as well pick up my video games when I gas up for grab a drink.

Just make sure that you don't mistakenly put mustard on your fresh copy of Gears 2.

Never been to a 7-11. I've been to places like it, but never the real thing. So unless they get some awesome deals over there I won't be bothering

They've had all those games at my 7-11 for the longest time already. But they never ever seem to restock. When I asked them for COD:WW they just handed me a shoebox with some games in it. About 7 copies of 007 and 3 of Fallout3. I don't see anything wrong with it personally, cause this 7-11 is like a block away and its way closer than any gamestop.

There's a 7-11 on every corner. Why go to GameStop when everything is sold at the same price?

"7-11 nachos are better than taco bells."

Neither of those two places sell real nachos.

:P

I haven't been to a 7/11 in forever. The nearest one is too far for me to care, but this is cool.

The convenience store in Shenmue stocked video games (albeit only by a contest) before convenience stores selling video games was cool.

Shunmue had video because,

1 japan has video games in there convenience stores and have for ever, where there was NES disk system machines in them.

2. the name of the store is" Tomato" , and that is making fun of "super potato" one of the biggist video game stores in japan.

So no real life in japan made it cool not shenmue.

@Cube:
Sure, Japan had such things for a long time, but it was a video game that made it cool in America. How many Shenmue players do you know were aware of that fact?

I wonder if they will allow you to trade-in your games toward Slurpees.

I sort of like this idea. I mean, its one step closer to video games being a widely accepted form of media, like movies and music. I can't remember the last time I walked into a convenience store and there weren't movies for sale. Sure, crappy movies, but movies nevertheless. Hopefully someday the same will be true for video games, although lets AAA titles are carried and not the video game equivalent of "Benji."

I once bought Star Wars battlefront from them, opened it in the store, showed the cashier woman the condition of the disc, and she gave me a refund in cash because she didn't know how to refund using the credit card swiping machine. I hope this tale illustrates the importance of this announcement.
