600 people involved in making Resident Evil 6 photo

According to executive producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi, "Resident Evil 6 is by far and away the most ambitious game in the series." The debut trailer certainly grabbed our attention, and with a 600-person staff working on this project -- no, really -- you'd certainly hope so.

"This is by far the largest-scale production Capcom has ever embarked on," Kobayashi continues. "Between the 150 staff members in Japan, and everyone around the world, we have more than 600 people involved. A lot of work has gone into this game."

I'm not sure whether to be impressed or frightened. I do like that RE6 is being referred to not as survival horror, but rather, "dramatic horror."

They say a game is heavily influenced by each member creating the game. With 600 people working on this, I'm have my reasons to be nervous. Only thing we can do is wait and see.

Why? Does Capcom really think that what looks like a super-action-packed run-and-shoot-everything game?

This game just needs to have less action and more survival horror to warrant an RE title and 600 people, in my opinion.

If they can merge the "required" modern controls of RE4 with the setting of RE2,3 for Leon, and give Chris the scenario of a zombie outbreak in an incredibly densely populated city, then that is AWESOME!

No more non-zombies, unremarkable settings, and stupid plots; just zombie horror, please!

@ismegamanthere - No, Revelations was proof that you shouldn't release annual sequels when the creative director behind the series leaves. If anything, Brotherhood is proof of how effective large teams can be, since it was an improvement in every category AND had one of the best online multiplayer experiences this generation.

Large development teams require focused direction and oversight, that's all.

The game is probably going to be split into 3 sections

Leon - Survival Horror ala past Resident Evil games with zombies.

Chris - 6 player coop action romp around China more akin to Resident Evil 5 with Ganados/Majini type enemies

Third guy - Implementing the Mercenaries mode into the story
I'm assuming that as he seems to have all these powers like Wesker/Krauser and claims in the trailer "I was better off being a mercenary" and says the mission is 200,000 "and the BOWs? They're extra" so perhaps getting rid of them lands you cash. Probably not though.

600 people could do well in creating three fully realised campaigns, no?

FOOD FO THOUGHT YO
Capcom pulled that bullshit move with upping Revelations' price point because they're claiming the game is that damn good and big. Will they pull the same stupid stunt with this game? If not, does that just show them up for being assholes with Revelations' inflated price?

@Sir Tobii If you mean the GameCube version, it was bastardized too much. Capcom said it's nearly 70% different than the original, with a different voice cast, all the cheesy FMV ripped out, and the sound cues altered. I would love to see a faithful remake, only tightening the controls and hitboxes and cleaning up the graphics. I loved the Gamecube's visuals, but I want the camera to be the same as I remember it, not relocated for dramatic effect. And the new, more serious/dramatic tone is bullshit.

I only play RE1 for nostalgia, so when everything's different it doesn't hit the right spots in my memory. I play the PSN version sometimes but it hurts my eyes. WHY DID I THROW OUT MY SHITTY TUBE TV?!?! Oh, 1080p, right...

@Voltaire - That was the point. It's not a port, it's an actual remake. It kept the essence of something great, then reframed it into a new experience. I wish every single "remake" went this route instead of the lazy, hd-paint ports.

REmake was the exact opposite of a bastardization; it was a successfully ambitious tribute that retained all the best elements, just showed things from different perspectives, literally and figuratively.

@Artemis I disagree. The first game was a corny 80s horror film injected into a poorly translated game, and had charm because of that. All that campness disappeared in the remake. If I'm playing for nostalgia I don't want different, just technically better in some ways. I'm not saying the Gamecube remakes are worthless, I just don't have any reason to play them.

@Kanten Deadly Silence is a straight port with touch controls and new difficulty settings. Also the music is somewhat altered.

I would like to think the all the extra men is due to extracting separate resources for the online component so the key group don't have to compromise anything in the single player missions. Also with 600 people, there's no excuse for this title to not be the most polish next-gen game ever.

Before I start, I'd just like to add that I am a HUGE RE buff. Have been since RE2 on the N64 (didn't own a PS1, but bought the REmake to experience the first game). I've owned every single title in the series, including the HD re-releases and Chronicles games. I say this because, whenever I support RE's more 'actiony-direction' I get shot down in flames as not a 'true fan'.

But I am. I continue to replay them to this day, there's something so timeless and enduring about the gameplay that makes me never grow tired of them. RE5 does not deserve the flack it receives, though. It's one of the best in the series.

Story has always been RE's strongest point. After it shook the cheese and typical 'Evil Company Archetype', it became incredibly mature and DEEP. The lore is almost overwhelming. But to understand it all and make sense of everything, you must've played them all. Most people who attack RE's story, hasn't played every game or read the files.

RE5, stellar gameplay aside, excelled in this area. It put to bed Wesker's huge story arc. It even revealed the long pondered question as to where the Progenitor Virus came from; the Stairway to the Sun flowers. Gave exposition as to how it was cultivated and much more. But even the basic, surface plot of the game was superb. Over-the-top? Maybe. But it was a spectacular drama, with cinematics to give Final Fantasy a run for its money. How can these 'fans' honestly think that story could've been told with the slow-paced gameplay of the originals? And especially with the same sense of urgency?

RE6 looks to take Umbrella's legacy and the series entire story to the next level, perhaps put in motion the end of the world? I mean, each numbered installment is getting bigger and bigger in scale. They don't rest on their laurels, Capcom. They don't repeat the same kind of story. I doubt they'll save the world in RE6 and have terrorists attack again in RE7 (only for the world to be saved again).

Then there's the(boulder-punching, dudebro biceps aside) characters. RE has always had believable, realistic characters. RE5 breathed life and personality into Chris, so much so that aside from his sister, Claire, is my favourite character now.

This is something RE6 already wants to fix, character-wise. Leon. Sure, RE4 injected personality into him. But was his constant wise-cracks believable, considering his situation? No. Leon seems far more distressed in the RE6 trailer, much like he did in RE: Degeneration, albeit a little less drab.

But I'm rambling. As you might've guessed, I'm rather passionate about the RE franchise. Some might just say I'm a blind fanboy, but story has always been the most important aspect to RE, and the new style of gameplay has broadened Capcom's story-telling possibilities. And as much as I adore the older style of play, fixed camera-angles, puzzles and all, to go back to that would be a huge mistake.

If anyone ACTUALLY read all that, thanks.

(A re-post of my comment from another RE story with added stuff)
