This is the reason why we haven't cured cancer yet -- we're spending 600 million collective hours playing Call of Duty: Black Ops. Over 20 million players have amassed the ludicrous figure in a mere 45 days following the game's launch.
Averaging out the number gives each player roughly 87 minutes of playtime per day from release until December 24. Evil publisher Activision is keen to point out that this far exceeds the average amount of time Facebook users spend networking their socialisms.
Gamasutra compares Black Ops' figures to Halo: Reach, which logged 50 million hours of play in its first week. If those numbers remained consistent for 45 days, Reach would have logged 326 million hours compared to Black Ops' 600 million.
Activision has not released the full number of online players, but has stated that the number of registered users outnumber those who tuned into ABC to watch the Lost season finale.
In short: This is f*cking insane.

Impressive numbers nonetheless, but also unexpected ones.

*shakes fist at the Gods of DToid*
While this is true, it's worth noting that Reach is probably the only game comparable in terms of online hours logged, regardless of its exclusive status. The Halo series is probably the only one that can even hope to challenge Call of Duty, so I think it's a worthy comparison to make.
Certainly nobody is disparaging Reach with the comparison. I take it as more to say, "This is the next biggest game, and it's almost doubled by COD".

I can definitely see why you've made the comparison Jim, and your reasons are no doubt valid, but I just thought it was worth pointing out.
Do the cod figures include the PC, 360 and PS3? If so, that's 3x as many platforms. It would be interesting to compare hours logged on just the 360, in my opinion.
Subscription services for the next CoD confirmed? I bet Kotick is masturbating in glee to the idea of charging for those 600 million hours.
What else would you masturbate in? Anger? Sadness?
I find anger wanks to be a great stress reliever.
Oh well, they'll release the same thing in a year and people will keep buying. Pretty nice to be a part of treyarch or infinity ward.
Having said that I picked up battlefield bad company 2 at Xmas and I'm having an insane amount of fun on that.
No need to be disappointed if someones getting enjoyment out of something like cod because you can bet your arse they aren't worrying about what we are playing.
It IS NOT derivative of Counter-Strike. There's a difference between building on a game then stealing from it.
Anyway, the game is good, its just really well made, its the only CoD I've been able to tolerate actually, currently at 29 on my 1st prestige and I'm enjoying it, they really, REALLY need to fix the damn netcode though, its horrible, its a step below trash, it boggles my mind that a game released in 2010 has so many netcode problems.
1) Black Ops is on PC and PS3 as well as Xbox. So that would give it a huge boost in playtime... I wonder what the numbers would be if it was limited to Xbox?
2) What about campaign? Now here I'm actually curious: does anyone care about Black Ops campaign? Because it doesn't seem that way to me.
I may actually have to get Black Ops though, if only for the zombie thing.
Someone should make a chart comparing time spent gaming to sleeping, eating, driving etc. for different people... not me though XD
My brother, however...well, put it this way. He's playing it now.
As my buddy was telling me recently (she is a Ph.D actively studying the solution) there is no singular cure. You have to develop multiple cures because there is a very large variety of cancers. Due to manufacturing and dispersal.
Best of all - avoid exposure to begin with.
I still have a huge box of he-man action figures in storage from when I was a kid. Jesus christ I'm getting old.
