6-year-old girl designs GameStop gift card, purchase one to help charity photo

6-year-old Mary McKenzie designed a gift card for GameStop that's going to help raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation ... and what did you do this year?

The Dallas-area girl drew up an adorable little holiday scene, complete with an angel, snowman, tree, and a reindeer for the videogame mega-retailer. For each sale of the card from now until December 26, GameStop will donate $1 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation up to $300,000.

Despite issue a press release, GameStop didn't release an image of the card, so you'll have to head into the store to check it out. And no, it's not that important that I would go into a GameStop on Black Friday. I'm not that stupid.

I'm pretty sure there's a minimum balance that you can load onto a gift card, so if you were thinking about just getting one for a dollar to help out charity, it ain't happening. But if you really want to piss of GameStop employees (sorry, guys!), before buying an item, purchase the exact total on a gift card first. Then immediately redeem it at the store's second register.

Let us know how that goes.

6-Year-Old Girl Designs GameStop’s 2008 Holiday Gift Card

Company Will Donate $1 to Make-A-Wish Foundation for Every Gift Card Purchased

GRAPEVINE, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dallas-area resident Mary McKenzie is helping GameStop raise funds this holiday season for the Make-A-Wish Foundation®. She had the honor of creating artwork for GameStop Corp.’s (NYSE: GME) 2008 holiday gift card. The 6-year-old first grader is a frequent customer of GameStop, the world's largest video game and entertainment software retailer. Her artwork depicts a colorful holiday scene complete with an angel, snowman, tree and reindeer.

McKenzie often submits her drawings to GameStop staff in the metroplex, so when Chris Olivera, vice president of corporate communications and public affairs at the retailer, heard about her drawings, he knew she would be the perfect person to illustrate this year’s holiday card.

“We were already in the planning stages for a holiday card that would benefit our corporate partner, the Make-A-Wish Foundation,” Olivera said. “I heard about Mary’s love of GameStop and her hope to help grant a wish someday for a child, so we asked her to help us design the card.”

For every gift card purchased between now and Dec. 26, GameStop will donate $1 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, up to $300,000.

“During the holidays, we have a lot of parents and grandparents who want to buy games as gifts, but they aren’t quite sure which title would be the right one,” said Dan DeMatteo, chief executive officer for GameStop. “By selecting a gift card, gift givers can be assured the gamers on their lists will be thrilled, and they have the added bonus of helping a worthy nonprofit like the Make-A-Wish Foundation.”

GameStop is proud to support the Make-A-Wish Foundation as its national nonprofit partner by helping gaming and shopping spree wishes come true for children across the country. The retailer has been working with the Foundation since 2007.

wow, sounds like Gametop might not be that evil at all...

unless they made all of those cards with child labor. Not that they did, but they could have. It's just as possible that they used the oil of baby seals for the plastic in the cards. Again, they probably didn't, but there's no proof of otherwise is there?

I'm pretty sure someone at GameStop held a gun to that girl's head and forced her to draw something. Either way the design will most likely suck balls. Yeah I said it. Suck it, you little bastard.

I love internet tough guys. I can't imagine how someone could possibly have enough balls to insult 6 year-old girls under the cloak of absolute anonymity. You crazy, man. You crazy!

They'll only donate up to $300,000? But I'm sure they'd keep selling the cards as being for charity long after that amount is raised.

This was probably drawn by a 40 something professional in order to give the "6 year old girl-drawn" look while also maintaining a realistic family, hence the dynamite in the tree.

@ bahamutzero

Did I express surprise? I'm quite sure it was derision. Or are you not familiar with people insulting others on the internet?

@ Atlas

At least they employed a 40 year rather than depending on the unskilled hands of a six-year-old.

yea you hit the nail on the head. its such bullshit. (i work there) theyre only going to give a dollar until they reach 300,000.

It is bullshit, Spykron, but at the same, time people can just donate to the Make-a-Wish Foundation directly. I know a lot of people are going to this Starbucks AIDS Charity day thing, where they donate 30¢ of your espresso drink to some AIDS Charity, and everyone is making a big deal about it, like they're making a difference. Well why not just GIVE THE AIDS CHARITY A BUNCH OF MONEY!? You can even skip the coffee and donate the money you would have spent on it, and you'll still be doing more good than participating in the AIDS event.

But whatever. I just don't think ANYONE, including me, can pretend we're doing the right thing, because we could always do more and we choose not to.

But obviously this is beyond the scope of a comment thread.

Well let's see....I think anybody could do A LOT MORE with help from the charity organization itself. While most of us are struggling to pay our bills and not drown in debt, some douche writing about someone else who's helping a noble cause is rubbing it in everyone else's face. How much did you donate this year Nick? I'm sure you have more to spare than I do! Sorry guys...I'm just in a bad mood today and this is the poor web page I unloaded on.

Blind Assassin, you can't take a joke. You've posted that a couple of times in this thread, we get it. Did you honestly read posts like "Pfft. I can draw better than that." as serious? Move on please.

"... and what did you do this year?" umm, rode 300 miles on my bicycle and along with 499 fellow riders raised 2.5 million for Make-A-Wish. Why? Oh, and none of the corporations involved with helping out required anyone to first make a purchase. Gamestop should just have the card as an option and then donate $300K regardless of how many people buy one and let the individuals donate $1 or $5 or whatever directly on their own.

The negative comments here and on digg.com are from people ticked off about the idiotic destructiod author's "and what did you do this year?" quote.

It's just a dumb comment that almost completely nullifies any good will generated from the story.

This sort of thing happens when blogs can't afford to pay real writers.
