51% of Tomb Raider: Underworld sales are for PS3 photo

It would seem that Xbox-brand downloadable content or the promise of waggle has not been enough to keep Lara Croft from flourishing on her spiritual home, the PlayStation. With 51% of total Tomb Raider: Underworld sales going to the PS3 in the UK, it would seem that some platform associations are hard to tear away from a franchise.

The game debuted in the UK chart at number 9, outselling the launch of last year's Tomb Raider: Anniversary by 67,000 units. The 360 version accounts for 34% of the total sales, while the Wii, DS and PS2 versions trail behind.

The PS3 continues to hold its ground in the United Kingdom, and with so many Brits growing up with Lara Croft on the original PlayStation, it's hard to associate the series on another platform. While not an end to the console wars by any means, it certainly shows the power of familiarity.

I get it, I feel that way about a lot of franchises, altough I got used to GTA on the 360 due to the downloadable content. Devil May Cry just feels wierd to play on the 360, Tekken will too.

Let's be honest here. People on 360 are swimming in A-list titles right now. PS3, not so much. It makes sense that PS3 owners are chomping at the bit for a decent game to play.

If you mean by all of the 2 (currently UK) exclusives 360 has, then yes. 360 owners are drowning in them.

The PS3 has only a meagre 1 exclusive, I'm sure it'll catch up!

But 51% of TR:U sales on PS3 indicates that either Wii60 owners aren't buying, or choosing the PS3 version; since I doubt Sony has 51% exclusivity in the UK market.

@ sparq-l:
I beg to differ. This is no longer 2006. There are plenty of 'A-list' titles on PS3. With so many multi-platform and PS3 exclusive games out this year, I am not, as you put it, 'chomping at the bit for a decent game'; On the contrary, with Valkyria, LBP, R2, Mirror's Edge, and so on, my wallet is begging for a breather.

Oooooh I forgot Valkyria Chronicles!

There we are... didn't take long for PS3 to catch up at all :D

@sparq-l

Looks like both consoles are "swimming" in A-List titles

I will only play Lara on PS3. That is mainly because I grew up that way, but also I don't own a 360

I just looked up this Valkyria as ive never heard of it...looks a bag of crap...alot of hype it seems...Reminds me of Front Mission games very slow...

However like you say its an exclusive and you can keep it by the looks of things!!

Resistance 2 is the only game id want thats out....well until GOD of War 3!!

Valkyria is slow, but then its a turn based strategy game so it kinda comes with the genre. Play Valkyria before you cast it aside.

"..alot of hype it seems"

In fact there was hardly any hype for VC and comparing it to a shovelware DS game when you haven't even played it is just idiotic. Also, many people didn't think they would enjoy the game and then were pleasantly surprised when they tried the demo.

@Mr Pibb

how the fek is it idiotic?? its a valid point!

You just obviously love the sound of the game, i dont, i dont like them games, i was explaining why i know il think its crap, was a valid argument! break it down and digest the comment dont just type somethig in a eager childish manner.

Its my view, no one can tell me i should play it first before i cast it aside, its upto me.

point made story over go play some real time strategy!! Im off to watch footy byeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

I would've gotten it for the PS3 if I didn't fear that Chrystal Dynamics are going to keep the game short and flesh out the story in DLC exclusive to the 360.

i guess this is a general qeustion, but this post relates...i own all three major consoles, but if theres a multi platform game...i buy it on 360, no matter what. With the achievements, better online play, and the sheer fact that all my friends are on and able to talk to me, its a no brainer to get a game on 360. I dont think in this case with tomb raider, that all these people own both consoles, but rather have nothing to play on the ps3, like a few have said before me. So my question to everyone is...why would anyone choose to get the ps3 version of a multiplatform game, if they own both the ps3 and the 360. just curious.

I feel as though fans of platforming games probably bought the PS3, since it had Ratchet & Clank Future and Uncharted, while the Xbox 360 had.. uh.. Kameo? and Braid. Braid was good.

anyways, I think genre fans could easily prefer the PS3.

@nycexc3: So they can play the game for as long as they want without worrying about console self destruction.

I have a 360 and PS3, no Wii. I have 7 360 games (all exclusive except 1) and I have 24 PS3 games (16 are exclusives).
The 1 game I bought on the 360 that isn't exclusive to it was Skate, because the frame rate was terrible on the PS3 version.

This is because 360 owners are mostly shooter fans, not adventure fans. PS3 fans are a well rounded group of gamers, and that's why they have many games of different genres that have long sales legs to them.
nycexc3's Avatar
nycexc3 at 11/25/2008 15:04
@brainderailment: I suppose thats a valid reason. My first 360 got rrod, but they replace them no problem, then i upgraded to the elite, and the disc tray broke on me, which they replaced right away. No doubt, i love the quality of the ps3 (controllers excluded), but i dont wake up every day wondering if my 360 will work. i think that the services and support microsoft offer are well worth the risk.

In my opinion this is because 360 right now... have MUCH BETTER games then Tomb Raider... PS3 right now has good new games but... 360 has much more which makes it hard to get Tomb Raider then Fable 2, Gears, and other games...
I don't think it neccesarily has anything to do with the console part.

The title's a little misleading. I thought you meant worldwide but UK isn't a big surprise since, until recently, PS3 has consistently outsold the 360. I'm guessing that the game will sell more copies on the 360 in North America, maybe not percentage wise but units wise.
