41% of gamers rely on word-of-mouth for information photo

An interesting new study by The NPD Group suggests that a significant number of gamers rely on word of mouth to obtain game information and make purchasing decisions, with 41% of those surveyed learning about gaming from acquaintances as opposed to marketing and magazines.

In fact, as little as 5% of the survey takers stated that advertising had any effect on them whatsoever. After word of mouth, hands-on playtime at the homes of friends and family were noted as the second biggest influence on modern gamers. The numbers vary according to platform, but the results seem to point in the same direction.

It's quite amusing to consider that for all the money pumped into online advertising, gimmicky marketing campaigns and exclusive magazine reviews, it's the traditional and old-fashioned methods of publicity that work the best. Friends telling friends, and personal playtime cannot be beaten if this survey is to be belived. Makes you wonder why half of the people in PR even have the jobs they have.

Both my brother and my cousin are gamers but they don't follow any of the news via magazines or websites or anything. Consequently, whenever either of them wants a new game, they come to me for recommendations. I recently hooked them both up with Fallout 3, I doubt I'll be hearing from the for awhile.

Crazy.

I get my info from pretty much just you guys and maaaaaybe Kotaku. Sometimes.

Then I pass that shit on to my friends, who are net-less. I know, doubly crazy.

Exactly why most people are fanboys...they know nothing of other consoles and that systems games. People need to stop listening to others all the time, and do some research them selfs.

I don't listen to others. Most often than not, I just have different taste.

Well I know my friends have good taste in video games. So most likely I'll listen to them than some IGN reviewer.

When it comes to news I mostly get my gaming information from Kotaku and Destructoid.

No...

Saying you are not affected by advertising and not being affected by advertising are two different things. People are notoriously stupid when it comes to accurately reporting what influences them. The hilariously named "Through the back door theory" is worth considering.

It's because reviewers tend to shit on everyone's favorite games and then somehow forget to shit on lazy 3rd party ports.

Being one who no longer gets television due to the digital switchover (I know, crazy, right?) I don't really get advertised to much. Yeah, banner ads here and there, but I can honestly say that I am minimally affected by the ads I minimally see.

My friends, who are not really hardcore gamers but do play a lot of games, get their info from two places: IGN (I can't explain it) and from other people like myself.

I've gotten them to try lots of games they'd never dream of playing on their own. They thank me because they realize they were missing out on lots of good stuff.

This survey seems to make sense to me.

I often ask my friends what they think of a game before buying a game, but I also like to watch funny video game reviews that are done either on here or on the The Escapist website, or Screw Attack, and base my game buying off that. I'll be pissed now if those three websites start taking money to say they think a game is good.

Word of mouth you say?

Well, I hear that this game, Way of the Samurai 3 is coming out October 13th in North America on both the Xbox 360 and PS3 for like $50 (this is correct MSRP)

Just thought I'd put that out there.

Most of my friends at work ask me about new games, because I have a tendency to buy/rent them and then give my opinion, or at least do loads of research on them. I tend to rely on D-toid most of all, but I also watch GameTrailers a lot, mostly for ScrewAttack's stuff and their all-video, all-hd game reviews.
Honestly, it's usually D-toid, which means it fries my bacon when we get a Darkest of Days review super fast, but it takes weeks for an inFamous or Prototype review. Seriously...wtf? I know you guys have to play them, but it usually takes a week for huge budget games to get a review on here.
That being said, the B:RB review was amazingly fast, so I hope this is a new tread.
Also, I heard Darkest of Days was IGN's GOTY. So you should all go out and buy it now.

I believe it. Not everybody can be the expert on games that we are. My less hardcore friends come to me for information, and I even got into stuff like CoD4 out of word of mouth.

with the interweb advertising is waaaaay too slow, you will hear about things long before there is any kind of advertising or article about it from friends online or in forums or blogs. That said I prolly get more info here than anywhere else which I guess is word of mouth.

Folks, we have a winner. I trust people I know personally a lot more than I do some faceless schmo on the pages of GI.

That, and I do the unthinkable - I try before I buy, any way I can manage it (that doesn't involve DLing the game).

Demos > word of mouth > ads. If an ad's interesting enough I'll download the demo or do some research though. So from that standpoint I wouldn't say the ads are a waste. The whole point is to get you interested in the game yeah? If the game doesn't hold up on its own after you research it, hardly the fault of the marketing guys.
