40GB PlayStation 3 confirmed with no PS2 backwards compatability photo

Hey, would you look at this? It appears that the long rumored 40 GB PlayStation 3 is indeed a reality. Confirmed for Europe today (still waiting on a US confirmation), the 40 GB model will hit stores on October 10, and will cost €399.

The new model will be Wi-Fi compatible, and will have an HDMI port, as well. The  40 GB model will only two USB 2.0 ports (as opposed to four), and the mult-memory card port has been done away with as well. Sony points out that those last two features can be added at a later date with "readily available aftermarket accessories."

Wanna know something that can't be added with an aftermarket accessory? PlayStation 2 backwards computability. That's right, this new model is no longer compatible with PS2 titles, "reflecting both the reduced emphasis placed on this feature among later purchasers of PS3, as well as the availability of a more extensive line-up of PS3 specific titles." I think Sony worded that last sentence confusing on purpose, as to trick us into thinking that the lack of PS2 software support was a good thing. It didn't work.

No word on a US release (yet), but if we had to guesss, it's a done deal.

@bbrigg
no.
dude, they are releasing a cheaper model, with a redundant feature excluded. I mean seriously if you don't have a ps2 yet you're probably not even in the target audience for a ps3.

LOL!!! Sony, you lot are officially fucking STUPID. Forgive my language but you guys just don't get it, do you? PS3 isn't selling because of the high price, because you dumb muppets used Blu Ray, making it so expensive.

You obviously don't want your customers to play games. As a U.K gamer resident I can tell you now, this 40gb piece of crap isn't gonna sell any skus. You Sony freaks sell a console with backwards compatibility from day one and remove it TWICE, afterwards. Give me a fucking break.

Bravo on the price, but if I can't play my PS2 and PS1 games (why the hell should I download them again, when I have them physically), knowing that you lot are gonna stop making PS2s soon, I certainly won't be touching this crap. I really don't know why you can't just stop fiddling and shuffling skus, and just drop the price.

Some of you guys n' girls on here counting this is nothing are deluded. The majority of gamers trade in or sell their PS2s to get PS3s, so this piece of shit leaves them high and dry. I collect my stuff so I'll be one of the lucky ones, but I don't want to have to bust out my PS2, in order to cover a simple angle that Sony promised before PS3 was even out.

THAT'S ALL WE WANT, A FUCKING REASONABLE PS3 PRICE WITHOUT COMPROMISE, NOW MORE, NO LESS. IT'S TOO LATE NOW, CONGRATS ON SEALING YOUR FATE.

@ Cowboy TTop:

How much money are you getting for your traded-in PS2's these days, bro? $25?

Skip the trip to the movies this week and keep your PS2 when you buy the $399 PS3. Problem solved. See how easy that was?

Yelling about things in all caps is never the solution.

That's retarded, who would want that? The playstation brand basically invented backwards compatibility and now they aren't offering it on all of their console skus? Next we'll hear that the $99 dollar PS2 won't have BC either, but hey it's ok, just keep your PS1 if you wan't to play MGS1 again. Seriously who wants to keep an extra console around, its just more shelf space taken and tv inputs taken.

Well, there goes my sole reason for buying a PS3.

Why's everyone acting all high and mighty, going "Oh, bler bler bler, BC is not a big deal at all."? BC is a HUGE deal. Don't any of you remember what a shoddily made piece of shit PS2 is? I would know, since I've already burned through two of them.

@ ArrestedDeveloper:

You know, they've been selling exactly the system you're clamoring for for some time now. It's the $499 PS3. Just what the non-sacrificing, sophisticated buyer wants! Bigger hard drive, more USB ports, backwards compatibility...

Guys it plays Blu-Rays and PS3 games, and costs $400. What more do you want?!

I get the feeling that most of the people bitching about this weren't exactly itching to get a PS3 in the first place.

*Sigh* I agree with the few people who have posted on here that don’t think this is such a bad move (Dale North, brainderailment, and others). Of course, I’ve had a 60 GB PS3 since the end of 2006, so this news is really inconsequential to me. But still...I’d like to see Sony put out an itemized list of the deductions in price from removing features for the 40 GB model...can taking out 2 USB ports and software-based backward compatibility really be saving them that much money? I mean, the damn thing still has 802.11b/g wireless and HDMI...

It almost seems as if Sony reduced the hard drive space, removed the flash card readers, and said to themselves, “Hm...well, we’ve already taken $80 off the purchase price, and we can sell this for $399, but...I don’t know, it just feels like we can take out some other random crap to justify the $100 price drop. Two USB ports and any shred of backward compatibility? Great, now we’ve saved ourselves $83.57 as opposed to $80...mission accomplished!” Still, though, you can’t beat the price...a PS3 and a Blu-ray player, with HDMI and built-in wireless, all for $399.

No Spider-Man 3 pack-in, though, eh? I tell ya, that would be the real deal-breaker for me if I was considering this. </sarcasm>

i dont see why this is such a issu, you guys act like they are going to keep making ps2 games for the next 10 years!!!! Unfuckinbelievable that some of you so called "gamers" are complaining about complete and utter bullshit. And another thing, if you are a "gamer" then you should already have a fucking ps2 you fucking fucks.

"What the hell is up with everyone saying they have too many models?"

let's see...

taken from wiki-

As of October 2007, there have been four announced hardware models of the PlayStation 3: a 20 GB model, a 60 GB model, an 80 GB model, and a 40 GB model (the xx GB names referring to the size of the internal hard drive of the system).

Sony needs to insert a shotgun into their mouth and pull the trigger.

Hey guys, while I already own a 20GB PS3 I really feel for future 40GB PS3 owners who are gonna be assed out of BC. I made a petition to keep BC on the 40GB unit. If your interested, sign it.

Because the PS2 was a lemon and the PS3 so far doesn't appear to be? Some of us actually waited this long just hoping for a more durable hardware, and if so can catch up on some of the titles we missed.

So if I got this right, you want to buy a ps3 to "catch up" on some titles you missed? Then that means you go deep, pay the extra $100 and get the one with BC. Its not like the new 40gb version is your only choice.

Probably a decision for the best if you want a cheap PS3. In the EU, Sony pays a hardware tax to the gubbment for every component; it's why the PS3 initially was so much more expensive in Europe than Japan and America.
There are some sacrifices you have to make if you want a cheap PS3. If backwards compatibility is necessary, get the more expensive version.

On a side note, I seriously doubt they cut software emulation. Just all the unneeded hardware.
I can't see why they'd cut the controller ports, though. That doesn't exactly strike me as the most money saving thing evar.

so people where actually planning on buying a PS3 for the main purpose of playing PS2 games? what the hell is the point? if you are still so heavily involved in playing PS2 games then just stick to your PS2, simple isnt it?

for the people on the other hand who are buying this for the sole purpose of getting better graphics and just a better gaming experience then, why not go for this? i for one havent looked back at my PS2 games since having the PS3, and the same went for when i bought a PS2 i didnt look back at my PS1 games.
