3DS update is live: Shoot 3D video, play new free games photo

The 3DS was set to get a system update on December 8th, but it looks like Nintendo jumped the gun. The update is now available to all, and it is awesome. The most eye catching feature of this new update is the ability to shoot video in 3D; up to ten minutes worth if you have the space on your SD card. The video mode has quite a few settings built in. You can change the speed of your video after you've shot it, adjust the camera for low light settings and shoot in 4 different modes (normal, time lapse, stop-motion, and montage).

The other 3DS channel to get a big update is the Streetpass-focused Mii Plaza. There are now 7 new puzzles to collect, based on Rhythm Heaven, Donkey Kong Country Returns, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, and more. You wont be able to form these new puzzles just by spending coins on new pieces, though. There are new pink puzzle slots that you can only fill through interacting with other players or special Nintendo hotspots. There is also a sequel to the turn-based battle quest mode. Find Mii 2 has tons of new features, like branching paths, the ability to buy potions in battle with coins, the option to pair two members of your party for combo attacks (but only if they are wearing the same color shirts), and the option to hire old Mii's that you've collected in the past, and more. I just hired Sterling (he's level 5, making him my toughest Mii) for two games in a row, and totally cleaned house. I already got 3 new hats (Yoshi, Top Hat, and Arwing hat). Hooray for hats!

Mii Plaza also has 78 Accomplishments (think achievements, but with some of them actually requiring you to interact with other people in real life), a soundtrack mode (that features 35 songs) and a map that shows where all the Miis you've met are from. I've met Miis from two different parts of Japan, and 5 parts of Canada. Who knew!

Unfortunately, the 3DS eShop is still down for maintenence so we'll have to wait a bit to see if the rumored release of the GBA Ambassador games and 3DS demos is really on the horizon. While we wait for that, hit the jump for more on this big 3DS update.

* You can now collect new Miis for your Mii Plaza through Spotpass

* There is a new Nintendo Zone channel that will be compatible with Nintendo hotspots, allowing internet access, free demos, trailers, and more

* You can now store your credit card information

* You can add friends at any time on your friends list. No more scrolling back to the front!

* You can now transfer 3DS eShop games from one 3DS to another

* And more! Download the update yourself and tell me what other new stuff you've discovered!

As much as Nintendo sucks at anything digital. I have to admit, this is one of the better firmware updates for any system.

Now to just see what has changed with the e-shop.

I also heard that there was some minor updates to the internet browser, but I can't tell a difference.

Also wow 78 accomplishments, that must have been fun watching the screen and have it say "congratulations" 78 times. When it told it to me 10 times I thought it was alot.

Ok, I'll admit it. I am turning on my 3DS for the 'Find Mii 2'. I loved that game.

The 3DS video is really cool stuff, I can't wait to see what I and others pull with this thing.

The Streetpass updates are cool as well, but I still don't get enough tags from people when walking around. Was in San Francisco the other day, walked +10,000 steps, and not a single pass. I was sorely disappointed. Whether it's the lack of 3DS out there or people leaving their wireless off, I hope this fixes itself soon! I want hats, and I want cool 3D pictures!

Did anyone in Europe get the Nintendo Zone channel? Can't seem to find it.
I'm from Portugal, so that's probably the reason...

Find Mii II is fantastic. I'll admit I liked the first game, but after I beat it the 2nd time I was over it, but now I'm totally sucked in again. The opening was funny, and this has more depth. I'm probably going to try to unlock everything.

You got to hand it to Nintendo they gave out alot of free 3DS downloads this year. The built in Find Mii, Ar Games, and Face Raiders, Pokedex 3D, 4 Swords, Excite Bike, Kid Icarus (Free in Japan & Europe, It'll probably be free everywhere else too) and the 10 NES, and 10 GBA games, and now Find Mii 2.

HAHAHA "Accomplishments" that's awesome. I was wondering how Ninty was gonna brand an achievement system after Sony stole the word "Trophies" from SSBM.

They changed little stuff in EVERYTHING. For example, the artwork in the AR games is different, the faces in Face Raiders are ever so slightly more detailed, streetpass plaza has a lot more depth now (the changes in here are too numerous to list), the friend menu has different looking shit, the nintendo zone has been added, the photography application can now scan QR codes directly, the game notes have some new text when no game is loaded, pop-in no longer occurs in the home menu (though it does load slightly slower), the mii channel is different (I can't pinpoint how though), there's 3D video recording (saves in .AVI by the way, thank god), and regular DS icons are now smoothed much better. This is one of the most detailed firmware updates I've ever witnessed.

I don't know if this is new,but they also have the "Download Later" option when downloading from the e-shop,which is essentially a background download option that downloads your stuff using Spotpass.
Again, this could be old,but it's still super convinient.

I think that pictochat-like messaging system is going to either come later or whenever the e-shop is up. I bet it'll be a separate application, rather than part of the friend menu already there.

Just downloaded the update. Yay. Also, took home Mario Kart 7(Mario Kart 5 to Sterling)... Yeah, the game could have been much more, but it's much more of the same and that's not a bad thing. So, what do you think about the new Kart, Holmes? What review score would you give it? Hmmm... I say the game is a solid 8. Yes, the game has flaws and seven games before it, but it's still full of awesomes.
Also, what's your friend code? Down to race? Is there a DTOID Kart community? Do tell... =)

I want to see that header image used MORE!

Also, yay update! Really happy that Nintendo seems intent on keeping the Mii Plaza interesting for those of us who completed Find Mii and all the puzzles. I'm excited to toy around with the new features. Also the 3d video works surprisingly well I think.

I also want to race in MK7, Holmes. A DTOID community would be great!

I third the idea for an official MK7 Dtoid Community, that's created by one of the staff members. When I heard about communities the first thing I thought of was that Dtoid needs one. Also I'd be cool if it got it's own little section in Friday Night Fights.

Just got me the sexy red 3ds to replace my boring blue launch one. Luckily, the turn-around isn't so bad. Selling a used 3DS on amazon can rake in pretty damn close to the cost of a new one, so if anyone else is thinking of swapping colors like me, i'd suggest that over trading one in somewhere. I got the new one on best buy's site, where they have this cool offer to get a free $50 gift card with a new 3DS!! I'ma use it to get Return to Dreamland ^.^

This is a good thing. My poor 3DS was bored during NYCC because I'd already finished all the puzzles and found Mii twice.

Now for PAX East and PAX Prime, I'm back in the game! :D

Very happy to see they updated streetpass so that enabled wifi no longer interferes. Maybe i'll finally be able to grab some tags? I was pretty dissapointed to make my way through the entirety of both boston-logan, and baltimore-washington airports and not get a single tag. (but i got one at olive garden at 9 pm on wednesday night, go figure.)

@Wally prior to the update, having your wireless on actually hindered getting tags - if you unknowingly wandered into an open hotspot, you couldnt get any tags because the wifi took precedence over streetpass tagging.

Thankfully, this update lets them play together nicely, so hopefully we can look forward to lots more tags!

The one thing Nintendo does right with online features is it automatically switches to whatever router you are currently near. Such a basic feature, but it's so nice.

Pretty cool update. I liked the fact they've put the equivalent of achievements into Streetpass Quest, it'd be nice if they implemented it system wide for all of their games, but that's just a small niggle. I'm digging some of the new features like the ability to jump into a friend's game if they're online, which is something they'd talked about at launch, and I can't belive the mount of new hats there is in Streetpass Quest2! There's like 40 or more hats to unlock! O_o
