For 300 bucks sounds fair to me. As well as Monodi, those alternative reality things intrigues me a lot, like a Demo for the Handheld (assuming that there will be no Bundle for now).

But, I'm and idiot and I still don't understand that wireless LAN access points (compatible with WPA/WPA2 IEEE802.11 security) thingy. Anyone care to explain?

I predict a $250 price, as 25000 yen ($300) was the amount the Wii cost at launch in Japan. Hopefully, the same will happen here.

We'll wait for the sales numbers to come in to see if $300 is a good price.

If the Nintendo recent track record is anything to go by, I'm betting it is. I fact, I'd bet my 3DS fund on it at odds of 2 to 1 so I can get one my my little bros birthday as well as my own.

Ouch, was hoping for $250, the same as the Wii. Looks like I'll really need to save up if I want a chance of affording one and a few games at launch.

I'll still be waiting for a 3DS XL or somesuch; when the bottom screen is smaller than a DSi's, I'm not feelin' it as a total upgrade. Hopefully the DSI XLs will have a price drop in lieu of its release; been wanting to show off my current games to my folks.

Sorry, going to ref. Jim's article on speculated 3DS pricing:

"We haven't made any kind of announcement at the moment, but the Nintendo DSi is available for around £129.99. The Nintendo DSi XL, with the larger screens, is around £159.99," he explains. "So obviously, it's going to fit, kind of, somewhere within that kind of architecture."

OK, so I guess I misunderstood how it was going to "fit" in that "architecture".

New way of seeing things = 3DS is a handheld with a price that you will pay to own it. Got it!!!

I hate to be bitchy about this, but DAMN; $300.00 is way too close to a half grand for my blood.

assuming you meant plasma tvs, the cheapest I found was 439 at walmart.com

However if you were referring to selling blood plasma, that may be the only way anyone can afford the 3ds at this vomit inducing price.

Has Nintendo actually said the 3DS will cost $300 in the US? If not, there is no reason to assume the Japanese price is the same as the US price.

I wonder if anyone has stopped to think the this system will cost much more in Japan than it will in the US before saying oh its $300. This has been a consistent pattern for game consoles prices for a long time. If its $300 in Japan, it can't be more than $250 in the US.

$300 is a "GREAT" price????

RIGHT.

People were complaining that the PS3 didn't come with backwards compatibility for $300 but $300 for a little handheld device is a "great" price???

I will be skipping this 100% as I thought it would have been around $200 which I would have been fine with. No way in hell im dropping $300 plus tax, plus, not to mention the US to CDN exchange rate. I imagine this will be $349 in Canada......

@ gameman87-- That's the last shred of hope that I'm hanging on to for this thing. The exchange rate yen-USD is right on the money (no pun intended), but if the US price is lowered for our market, then the 250.00 might just be feasible. Still, 250.00 USD is incredibly steep (IMO) for a handheld gaming device. Only time will tell, and perhaps they will offer a budget model with less accessories packed in. All I know for sure is that I really want one, but the price point is going to weed me out of the market on this one.

If it's above $300, then it's a definite "no". $250 with incentives, and I'll consider it, though I'm still on "wait and see" mode. Some of the announced games look awesome, but a lot of them strike me as rehashes and sequels thrown together to cash in on the 3DS launch. I'll be waiting on full reviews, without doubt.

I'm hoping that PSP2 details will be released before the 3DS launch, so we can get a real comparison. Most likely, I'll wait until the end of 2011 before I make a decision.

200 is as high as I would go for a portable system, seeing how most of the games I wanted to play on it are N64 ports(and my N64 still works just fine).

I think Im with the wait a year crew on this one.

@Ilort het The charging stand is probably adding some to the price because accessories like that are always overpriced. As for the SD card, I've seen a 2 GB for as little as $9 so that's probably not a factor.

What's with all the people brandishing the word "handheld" as if that makes a device worth less money? Where I come from, miniaturization means big bucks. High-power and high-feature devices are going to be cheaper to manufacture in a larger, standalone package. Putting everything Nintendo is packing into the 3DS (including some really sweet breakout tech!) into a package the size of the 3DS and making sure it runs smooth, cool, and efficiently is no small feat. Maybe the netbook craze has just warped people's perceptions, but think about it this way- You can build a decent gaming PC for around $1000, but to get a laptop with similar power and functionality, you'll likely spend closer to $2500. As far as I'm concerned $250-300 is well worth the price (albeit, tough on the wallet). We're getting something that, from a technology standpoint, is more impressive than the Wii. Makes sense for it to be priced around the same.

It won't cost $300 for the U.S. Although the Japanese price is equivalent to 300 American dollars, they won't charge that much. This has happened with the DS, as well as with the revisions of the DS. If the average Japanese man moved from Japan to America, he would be wealthier than the average American man. Because of this, they can charge much more for the same product in Japan than they do in America because people will be able to pay that much.

Could be a Sony type mistake to price it that high...especially in the spring.

The DS could only support WEP encryption, which is pretty insecure easily crackable in a lot of cases. WPA and WPA2 are way more secure. Those two encryption methods supported on 3DS means I no longer have to swap my wireless router from WPA2 to WEP if I want to take my handheld online.

tl;dr, WEP is insecure, the 3DS is joining the present in wireless encryption, yay.

Still not worth 300 in my book though.

@Omnipotentbagel Yeah I agree with you there. Why are people even comparing it to home console devices? This has more processing power then a gamecube in a device that you carry in your hand.. with 3D vision.. with 5.1 surround sound.. with a 3D camera.. with wireless connection. Comparing 3DS to PS3, Xbox, Wii, is like comparing a laptop to a desktop.
