A Japanese gamer that got the 3DS Slide Pad early cracked open the manual to find that it promises 480 hours of play time from one AAA battery. That's a crazy number, but I'm guessing that this single control doesn't need much juice. Hell, I'm surprised that it can't just draw power from the 3DS.
It's a good thing that the battery lasts that long. A photo on Andriasang shows that the battery compartment for the Slide Pad is sealed with a screw. Who wants to pack a screwdriver? Great idea there, Nintendo.
The Slide Pad also comes with a strap. Neato.
It's too bad that they didn't make the Slide Pad an additional battery to add to the 3DS's battery. I find myself not wanting the Slide Pad as it would force me to take off my beloved Nyko Power Grip for 3DS.
More play time > second slide pad.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Though it is kind of a weird decision to have a screw there it's not a big deal. I've done alot of construction like work, and because of that I've come to realize nearly everything is a screw driver. It becomes kind of fun figuring out what non-tool things you can use to fix things.
For instance you could possibly use the side of a 3DS game card, a credit card, the flat top part of the 3DS stylus, the SD card in the system some keys, the corner of the 3DS lid, you're fingernail etc. So long as it's flat, fits in there, and doesn't scratch anything it'll work.
At least until a competent company comes out with a slide pad/3DS battery extender combo for $20
I'm gonna have to buy this for Kingdom Hearts cause I doubt that they've fixed the camera issues the series has. This isn't the ideal solution, but it's better then having a revision, and leaving the rest of us out in the cold with no nub love. Alot of people demanded a 2nd circle pad, and we got it so this is a result of popular demand.
This is the best way for them to handle the situation. Releasing an inexpensive optional add-on, that is comfortable to hold. It may be big and hideous, but just don't carry it with you when you don't need it.
As for an add-on that adds a 2nd stick, and battery-life. I'm positive 3rd party companies are going to come out with some. So I'd say hold out for one of those if you want both in one.
Ghasp! ::Law & Order intro::
WE BITCH ABOUT ANYTHING.
Still,I am going to do the same thing Smo5000 suggested,Home=Slide Pad; Outside=Nyko Power Grip
"Hell, I'm surprised that it can't just draw power from the 3DS."
I'm surprised they didn't add a frikken' extra rechargeable battery to this thing.
Then this thing would serve double purpose and be 50% less stupid.
I think its a good idea, since u only need to change the battery every 480hours. So there is no losing the battery because of broken plastic or something, don't see the big deal.
Will consider buying it if I'm not happy with the normal controlls of RE:R.
Attack Dale North
Muhahaha, we have succeeded in hurting his feelings.
Also you guys forgot that Dale North has no fingernails, and he can't touch coins, or debit cards so if it runs out of juice in the wild wilderness he's doomed.
It's been 10 years, there Ninty. You slap a Lithio battery in this guy and you can easily charge 50 bucks for it. Myself and every other sucker that buys all of your systems will pick up two of them just to keep the damn battery topped off.
right trigger center character view(in MH)>slide pad peripheral
"Who's going to be able to?", that's what we really should be asking. If this thing decides to die on a plane, your not going to be able to change the batteries -then what? Go to a hardware store when you get to your destination, just for this? Just for one time use if its a round trip?
Thats a terrible idea and it seriously needs to be changed. Theres absolutely no reason that couldn't be a plastic tab holding that door in place.
Im surprised lol
Im surprised lol
So it lasts 480 hours, on an AAA battery ... why not just drawn from the 3DS battery then!!! It's not as if it uses much juice. The impact on the 3DS battery would be negligible.
Instead you got to buy AAA batteries and have to keep replacing them (real environmentally friendly I must say), unscrewing the seal screw every time.
WTF!!
@ima420r
I love how haters keep yelping about the memory card price.
The fact that Nintendo ripped off early adopters by 90 fucking dollars is glossed over by them - and all you got are a bunch of TWENTY YEAR OLD games for your trouble. Yupe, $90 for a couple of games which are older than some of the players LOL and those that are older than the games have more likely than not already played most of them to death.
Dude, the damn thing can use a single AAA for 480 hours. Sure, they could have used the 3DS itself to power it, but this surely isn't something to make this much of a fuss about.
Sure, if they had added the second circle pad to begin with, it would have been better. However, you can't always anticipate every complaint that the public will have after the release. In all honesty, I didn't even think it needed a second circle pad. While it has become a standard in home console gaming, it doesn't mean that it's necessary to enjoy the game in general.
I bought the 3DS on launch because I wanted it. If you really want a device, you buy it regardless of the price, if you have the money to do so. Do I wish I had gotten the lower price? Sure. Am I going to act like it's the end of the world because I didn't? No. The fact is that if the system hadn't sold anything on day one, they wouldn't have continued to support the product, and we would have never been having this discussion.
All-in-all, I enjoy my 3DS and I think it is an excellent handheld. I can't wait for the upcoming games. Will we see a 3DS that has a larger screen and a second circle pad built in? Probably, but it won't be out for at least another two years. Even if it comes sooner, that's no reason for me to sit here and act like the original 3DS is a piece of shit. Look at the original brick DS. That thing is ugly, clunky, and it barely had PSX level graphics. Yet it sold like hotcakes. The 3DS has a beautiful, sleek design. It has a circle pad that no other iteration of the previous DS had. They improved the graphics quality at least ten fold. Yet, this system is deemed a piece of shit. What gives?
