3DS sales spike in Japan for Monster Hunter 3G photo

Monster Hunter 3G is the hot sh*t in Japan. The first week sales numbers are out, and it looks like Capcom's latest for 3DS moved 471,055 units. Keep in mind that this "week" is only two days of data. The real first week sales numbers are going to be huge.

This release saw 3DS sales spike, pushing the weekly numbers above even launch week's total sales. Andriasang says that Nintendo's 3DS had its best week yet, moving 378,114 systems, beating out the 371,326 units from launch week earlier this year. The only other spike to even come close to this is when the price was dropped a few months back.

MonHun has helped the 3DS pass the three million sold mark, with 3,237,272 being the new total.

Wait a minute, you mean there are actually people who prefer gaming on a dedicated handheld as opposed to a smartphone? Weird. I mean, the experts keep telling us "nobody" wants a dedicated handheld anymore, and the experts are ALWAYS right.

Congrats! I just recently got Monster Hunter Freedom Unite for the PSP, and it's pretty fun, and immediately sucked me into the franchise! Will definitely be buying this when it comes out (or I can just get the better looking PSP version, IF I could actually find a copy at my local Gamestop)

Not that I agree with the "experts", but I think the experts you're talking about are only referring to the American market. I could be wrong though. Japan loves it's handhelds so it's not going away over there anytime soon.

When these people speak of dedicated game systems going the way of the Dodo, I get it to mean everywhere mobile phones are sold.

In fact, some of those people are from Japan and (especially) Europe.

I... don't quite grasp what is is you are trying to say, El Conrado. Are you saying there are no mobile phones sold in Europe and (ha) Japan?

Oh yeah the 3DS is really failing alright, looks like Nintendos going to have to close shop!
(/sarcasm)

...no. (Who'd you ever read that?)

I'm saying that when these self-proclaimed experts say mobile phones will replace systems, they are not talking about any specific region, but about any place cell phones are sold (read: everywhere on earth).

And that since some of those people live in Europe and Japan, they can't be talking about the US market exclusively ether.

I want it.

I don't want a 3ds.

Hurry the fuck up with that EU psp version already!

Also monster hunter 4. I need it in my body. But I won't have a 3ds. I will have a vita though. Wink wink.

@Sexualchocolate: Or, you know, get a 3DS *and* a Vita! It's what all the cool people are doing. People who like playing lots and lots of awesome games.

@zaheer I guess I'm not cool then...(3ds for me, though I think everyone here knows that..) although I agree with your veiwpoint.
OT 471,000 out of 500,000 is quite a sell through rate.
I really want this game.

I love MonHun so bad, but am REALLY pessimistic about this coming to the US. I doubt we'll get anything new Monster Hunting before MH4 is released... even then, I'm not holding out much hope of getting that localized either. :(

Prove me wrong Capcom!

I think it will make it for a number of reasons that would take forever to list.
Either way, I will have this game. I must....
MONSTER HUNTER!!!

@deaddays: Christian Svensson has indicated that Capcom is fairly interested in pursuing Monster Hunter in the US, so I think releases for 3G and 4 are a pretty safe bet.

I also think 3g will have online if it comes overseas.
My thinking is threefold:
1 capcom knows online is a must for monhun overseas.
2 the original had different online policies in the us and japan(you had to pay in japan)
3 the majority of the game is already translated, so why not launch the game worldwide like RER?(and if very early rumors were true, this has been being translated along with development)
Perhaps to give time to setup an online infrastructure?
This is just guessing, of course. But it would be awesome if I was right.

Furthermore, portable3rd probably won't come over according to svensson because of Sony's trophy policies(hd version mostly I think) and because sony won't update adhoc party for p3rd to use online.
The last reason could also be used as evidence towards my above theory.

Does anyone know if the game is actually any good?

MH games in the past have been critically panned, but always sell milions... has anyone seen any reviews?
Salnax's Avatar - Comment posted on 12/13/2011 13:17

@JQM78 Monster Hunter 3 on the Wii actually got the best reviews in series history, and this is essentially an expanded port of the Wii game minus the online. Make of that what you will.

@JQM78

Considering this is basically Tri with tons of extras, go read our Tri review to get a good idea.

A lot of the "panning" for the series comes from people who think they can go into a battle, spam a button or two, and instantly win. Then they get upset when they keep failing and criticize the combat system.

Depressing when a '7' counts as "critically panned"...

@Sam: Didn't you get the memo about how anything less-than-eight is a critical failure?

Monster Hunter is a real game, not a 2-hour diversion with cutesy graphics. Even playing Skyrim, sometimes I wish its gameplay were as good or vicerally exciting as what we see with Monster Hunter on the PSP (which is a steal at $10 on Amazon, last I looked). You won't see Monter Hunter on a tablet or phone, or if we do it will be a pathetic cipher of the original.

There is an ios monster hunter spinoff game. I don't know much about it, except that you only battle monsters and I'm sure it is extremely simplified.

After enjoying the spectacular Monster Hunter Tri on the Wii, I will definitely be picking up any new MH games. The online feature of the Wii was a major contributing factor to why the game was so great and I seriously hope that they implement online for future MH titles.

I just WANT this improved version. In PS3. PSP. Vita. 3DS. I don't care, Capcom. Just GIVE IT TO ME!

They DO have MonHuns for PS3 and 360... for Japan. And they're ports.

I'm waiting for 3G to be localized so I can buy a 3DS...

Yes, I buy consoles based on Monster Hunter games, bought a Wii and a PSP for that reason.

I do not regret at all.

3ds has outpaced the ds in every single region. Not only is it not failing, its succeeding harder than any other system this gen.

The ds,ps3,360,wii did not outpace first years of there predecessors
